The Spiritualized Film Club

Post by Stuart X.Hunter »

Thought this might be a useful thread. Certainly it'l be for me...having justed joined lovefilm with a 2month free unlimited voucher from my colleague KCH...there are a multitude of films heading my way.

So, has anybody seen anything of note lately?

I've recently watched Inglorious Badwords...in which I thought Brad Pitt did what he was best at...I was recommended Burn Aftrer Reading as well...yet to get.

Looking forward to Metropolis, Das Experiment & Le Denier Combat arriving...as well as seeing the slow-hyped District 9.

Best,

Stuart

I thought Inglorious Basterds was awesome. Brad Pitt was great and so was Christoph Waltz (Landa the Jew Hunter, in the movie) its just so over the top. When Brad Pitt is speaking Italian, the way he says "A River Derche", i love it...

I've been really into Werner Herzog lately. The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser is probably my favorite movie. That or Herzog's Woyzeck. Herzog's Bad Lieutenant : Port Of Call New Orleans was pretty great too, and i only saw a rip that was posted online, so i cant wait till it comes out on dvd...

i have also watched Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders) a few times recently. I rather liked that too... and the soundtrack is pretty awesome as well.

I saw Let the right one in last year (octoberish) and it is the best film i've ever seen, in my humble opinion. It's not really a horror film at all, tho it has some horrific scenes. I just found it completely stunning.

Saw the Road last Sunday and was quite impressed. Pretty faithful to the book and Vigo Mortensen is superb. Came out to trudge home in the ice and snow and got well depressed, though obviously it wasn;t quite as apocolyptic as the scenes in the film. Cried like a baby at the end. I have a nasty habit of crying at a drop of a hat in films...its always the music that gets me.

I am sure you are aware that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis provided the soundtrack, I haven’t seen the film yet but have had the soundtrack on heavy rotation for the last couple of weeks, I also recommend White Lunar as a good compilation of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis soundtracks.

John Hillcoat is a genius, The Proposition is one of my absolute favourites, Ghosts of the Civil Dead is a fantastic film too (although I have to look away at times).

About 12/13 years ago I saw Nick Cave and the Dirty Three play a live soundtrack to the Passion of Joan of Arc at the NFT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Passion_of_Joan_of_Arc I can‘t remember seeing a film that had so many people in bits by the end.

At the weekend;

THX1138 - a beautiful film to view without paying much attention to what's going on (I was playing Florence to my gf who had numerous visits from the tequila sick fairy).
I will watch again tonight to form a more rounded opinion but I loved the editing/cut-up opening half hour which was remarkably tensioned.

Children Of Men - without doubt one of my favourite films. The cinematography is exacting. The dystopia freed by Quietus (a suicide pill).
"As the sound of the playgrounds faded, the despair set in. Very odd what happens in a world without children's voices."

A must if you haven't.

Best,

Stuart

Yep, Inglorious.. was superb i thought. Good acting all round, but especially Christoph Waltz. The suspense created when he arrived at the house in the opening sequence...immense!

For me last year's best film was Let The Right One In. So subtle, yet gripping, it made most other films look hamfisted.

I'm a big fan of Inglorious Basterds too. Watched it last weekend and was enthralled all the way through. The basement shoot out scene was intense. Loved the use of the Morricone style music at the start when the Jew Hunter came visiting the farm family. I liked his use of yellow titles again and the quick fire montages of past events, epsecially with the ex-German soldier Basterd. Great film.

Also saw Adventureland on the weekend which was a good one. Great soundtrack. Loved the main characters 'Bummer Songs' mix tape with Pale Blue Eyes on it and his girlfriends Husker Du and Lou Reed tee shirts. The guy with the 'tache from Superbad was funny....."you don't know what I'm capable of!!"

Then last night I sat in and watched United 93 again. Saw it at the cinema when it first came out but that was slightly disrupted by a bunch of teenager shmucks not respecting the kind of film it was. Not the best film to see before going to bed.

I did want to see The Road but seem to have missed out on that one. Hard getting to the cinema these days with a 2 year old at home.

The new version? I haven´t seen that but I saw the original a couple of times.

The last sort of ok film I saw was shutter island...

nowadays deliberately trying to watch movies I know are gonna suck!
yesterday i fell asleep watching resident evil afterlife (based on a video game)
tonight:
far cry (based on a video game)
prince of persia sands of time (based on a video game)

btw repo men is no better than the average "based on a game" movie although it is not!

Legend Of The Fist - Return of Chen Zhen (OTT kung fu action but really well filmed too)
Legion of Assassins (Latest John Woo film... beautifully shot as usual. Very enjoyable)

Hi all, any of you movie buffs into the classic Ivan the Terrible films? A friend of mine put a beautiful video up for "Stay With Me" set to an excerpt from Ivan the Terrible 1. It just works. See what you think:

He has one for Bittersweet Symphony too - not sure if he's uploaded it yet. Must check.

Somewhere.

I really liked it. Very Sofia Coppola. I can see the parallels to Lost In Translation, although I liked the latter one better.

I only really got into the atmosphere when the film was over. But that's probably better. It was... cute and beautiful. And a bit weird.

Absolutely.

Best film of last year by a mile.

Favourite line “Let’s truck bomb a kebab shop and fly a jumbo jet into Waj’s mum’s head”

Nice use of Avril 14th by The Aphex Twin too.

Yes, the film has received excellent reviews here in Portland. We saw it at a small cinema but it was packed. I thought the characters were excellent but complete idiots and buffoons. Love the way Morris has tackled a sensitive, difficult but very real subject (British born Jihadists) with razor sharp humor.

Best line for me: "I may ask you to blow yourself up but I will never ask you to pee in your own gob".

Very good, indeed.

'The Runaways' (Joan Jett's teenage band).

Like the NY Dolls, I was never a fan of the band but I have always been intrigued by their story. Unfortunately, I expected a bio pic or a documentary but I didn't learn anything new about them. The film was basically a 90 minute wank fest for the director to embellish the sex, lesbian tension and drug aspect of the band. Also, the film ignores 3/5 members (focusing on Cherie and Joan), the wigs worn by most of the actors were crap and whoever played Kim Fowley was dreadful.

Lame. I don't recommend this one.

Just watched this today. I think I need another run through. Funny, edgy, uncomfortable. I think I missed some jokes in the translation.
Bought a bunch of DVDs in England last week. Football Factory was ok. Exit Through The Gift Shop was really good. Still haven't watched Beertickers about real ale geeks. I am a fan though not a note taker or ticker so that should be pretty enjoyable. And East Meets East which I have seen once and was really funny.

We watched The Social Network last night. Everybody in the film is portrayed as a major asshole. It's a decent movie, but like 'Juno' a couple years ago...I didn't feel it was Oscar worthy by any stretch. But, it did make me realize that I am glad I don't have (nor feel that I need) a Facebook account.

It was an engaging film and a lot more exciting that I thought it would be going into it. Facebook has its purposes, for sure, though. I upload photos of my daughter there for my family to see, which is a lot easier than emailing them to everyone. Also, it's a good for bands to promote themselves and fans to get up to date information, as it's a lot easier to post updates than it is on a normal website.

Not very high brow but I took my daughter to see A Turtles Tale (the 2D version). It was rubbish but she loved it. The lesser cousin to Finding Nemo in each and every department. Only her 3rd trip to the cinema, with Tangled and Fantastic Mr Fox being the two films before. Watching her reaction to the film and experience is sometimes better than the film itself.

Grown up films? Last one I saw was True Grit. It was alright but nothing special.

totally agree, love this film it's much more about characters and drama than your average gangster flick (shows shows that it was originally a play). when the violence does happen it's much more striking. I like the way they weave together the racism subplot with the main family drama etc and the gangster stuff. this was also the film that made me want to investigate doowop further.
I can also heartily recommend this film.

We watched 'The Fighter' last night. Pretty good. What a family!

My only criticism of the film would be that Mark Wahlberg seemed miscast. He was too pretty boy and not rough enough in comparison to the rest of the family. Christian Bale, however, wow...what a performance! Who would have thought he was British?! A well deserved Academy for his performance.

Looking back at the Oscars it's interesting to note that most of the films nominated for "Best Picture" were based on real people and real stories.

I liked The Fighter, but I don't know if I'd give it as many accolades as the critics did. Bale was amazing, though.

A Bronx Tale: Very odd that Netflix says this isn't available on DVD!?

Hobo With A Shotgun

Possibly the most fucked up, screwed up, violent and funniest film since Peter Jackson's Brain Dead. Go see it. DO NOT TAKE CHILDREN!

I watched American: The Bill Hicks Story over the weekend. Highly recommended. It was interesting seeing him play sold out theaters in the UK and tiny comedy clubs in the U.S.: http://www.americanthemovie.com/

fuck machete (pretty disappointing for me) ...
I have high hopes that this one lives up to its poster.. always loved Rutger, damn fine actor!

As much as i loved Machete, i think they kept it tamer than it should have been; maybe to win over more mainstream cinema goers. It had a lot of potential, but THIS is just NUTS!!! 8)

A curious one. The Harlan Coben book it came from is obviously American and I found the DVD cheaply recently. I was a little surprised when I stuck it on and it was French, but they do a faithful repro of the book in many ways and I rather enjoyed it.

The book is excellent and made me purchase a few more Coben thrillers.
