Weird that I would start this thread as Brian Duffy has passed.

One that everyone knows.

Did you see that documentry about him a while back? What a genius! Overused word but I think used rightly in this instance.
Some great interviews, in particular he spoke about the breakdown he had in the 60's where he realised he was working for alot of people (advertising and otherwise) that he despised so he set fire to all his negs. Pure madness!

What amazing work though! Stuff we all take for granted in the days post Photoshop, he was doing it all in the raw. Outstanding.

No, I would like to see it. Hopefully I can DL it somewhere.

Art direction has turned into a lazy game actually. I really appreciate the old stuff much much more.

He was a pioneer in UK photography and people should see his photo essay work.

I dropped into the Photographers Gallery at lunchtime to see the Sally Mann exhibition after seeing something about it in the press. Some very good photographs, some stunning esp with regards technique and development. I loved the two showing on the links below

Phwoar! I remember liking her and her horn blowing more than the actual band itself. Linking this to my cd selling post elsewhere - the 2nd hand record shop didn't take all my cd's and the Zutons album was one of them. Haha! You can't evn sell it for a lousy quid these days!

A friend shared this on facebook. Incredible stuff.

The guy whose life is now ruined (well, hopefully it pays off) reminds me a little of the Numero Group guys. Both are basically committing their lives to expose this incredible art to the world that would have otherwise faded into oblivion.

The best shot of anyone I have ever seen.

Joe Dilworth. Pretty awesome photographer. He's also shot really cool pics of... My Bloody Valentine.

And this awesome Ride pic:

I really like his style. But especially that shot of Jason.

EDIT: Doesn't really count, but I love that artwork: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 9451_n.jpg

Nice photos hof! I like the soft blur and how it works with the movement in the photo and the contrasting lights and darks.

Our darkroom is long gone but I do teach a digital photography class. It is essentially a one semester "intro" class that I designed to teach kids the fine art approach to photography. I also have a few advanced photographers in there as well who are working on a separate curriculum.

Your generation is the most photographed generation in the world and kids love taking pictures. But, snapshots are what most kids take for their instagram/facebook etc. My approach to the class and how I designed it is to teach them the basic principals and elements of art & design to give them a greater appreciation for the art of photography. I also teach them how to get off the "auto" setting and how to edit photos using Adobe Photoshop. It's a popular class and most kids who take it really love it.

hey thanks. yeah i somehow got really lucky with his face rotating like that but his body staying in place.

I really dislike the sort of constant photo-taking/addiction to facebook/all that classic stuff, but it's weird since I've started doing more photography this past year. It's very different than obviously phone/digital pocket cam stuff which is what people are doing when they're doing stuff all the time, but I still feel sort of hypocritical for criticizing people for doing that stuff but then doing this sort of photography myself - or for instance I dislike people holding their phones up at shows all the time sooo much, and yet, I've started taking a few photos at every show w/ the fm... i get really excited to get the contact sheet/prints back, etc. feel like I am using a double standard and like maybe there's something wrong with that.

I guess my way out of it would be to say - I don't think I am doing what I am doing to be posting it all the time and living in this socio-virtual world... I hate the sort of weird constant exhibitionism that facebook has instilled in my generation... and yet here I am posting? whatever.

Image

I've just started experimenting with pushing/pulling film. This was shot on 800 pushed two stops to 3200 (and then scanned). I don't know for whatever reason that sort of grain is just always really appealing to me... I think it's my same friend as on the right in that first photo I posted in this thread, but to be honest I'm not 100% sure (don't really remember much of this night...). I like this one a pretty decent bit, but i think more because of the sense of alienation i was feeling a lot of at this event, and maybe the photo gets some of that (i always end up feeling pretty weird at these sorts of classic big hedonistic privileged la kid's parties thrown at enormous, exorbitant houses while the parents are out of town).

what do you think, can you get that vibe form it or do i only get that because i know/experienced the context? i guess i was just hoping to capture something adolescent in it. a few other shots from that night here. the 2 stop push really is petty crazy.
