Mark Lanegan solo: West Coast shows!

Post by redcloud »

Great news! It's been far too long since just Mark and his songs came through town.

West Coast only but who knows...maybe he will add more dates. All dates will be acoustic performances with special guest Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss.

June 12 Hollywood, CA Hollywood Forever Cemetery
June 14 San Francisco, CA Great American music hall
June 16 Portland, OR Doug Fir Lounge
June 17 Seattle, WA Neptune

Yes, you should! Portland venue is small and intimate....lovely setting too. In fact, your post reminds me that I still need to get my tickets. Tried to last weekend but it was cash only and as it was warm and sunny I couldn't be bothered to go to the bank and return. Rain has returned so I will get them this weekend.

If you decide to make the trip...give me a shout.

A buddy is going with my wife and I to the gig and he has some equipment. Will let you know if we are able to record it.

Tonight!

Great write up in this weeks 'Willamette Week' (a free Portland weekly). Really pleased to hear he will tap deeply into his back catalog of solo albums and even some Trees stuff. It has been too long (last time I saw him solo was on the 'Bubblegum' tour).

Wow! Now that was special. Just Lanegan and Jeff Fielder on the stage. Fielder was mindblowing! Like Luther Dickinson of the Crowes he was just one hell of a phenomenal guitarist strumming away on the acoustic. The audience too were respectfully quiet while they played. My only gripe was that the gig wasn't long enough! Encore and all it was only 1'15. But, Mark came out afterwards and met with the people who were still hanging around. We had a brief chat with him, which was very cool and I had him sign one of the posters that I nicked off the wall.

I also tried to get a set list from the stage but they were quickly gone before my fingers could get there. This is what I immediately remember that he played but I'm sure there are a couple numbers I have forgotten:

When Your Number Isn't Up
One Way St.
No Easy Action
Where The Twain Shall Meet
Don't Forget Me
Low
I'll Take Care of You
River Rise
Judas Touch
Hit The City
Just Like Willie John
Meth Blues
One Hundred Days
Bombed
Julia Dream (Pink Floyd cover)
Beast in Me (Johnny Cash cover)
Burning Jacob's Ladder
Halo of Ashes

'Halo' was the closer and it was absolutely phenomenal....very raga-esque guitar that was jaw droppingly stunning! Beautiful stuff.

Cheapster, sadly my friend didn't have anything concealable that we could have recorded the gig with. I am sure it might appear on some live page somewhere though.

Yep. My wife and I were floored as one incredible tune after another from his back catalog was unveiled, stripped down and presented in honest fashion. Great stuff.

It may have clocked in at 1:15 but he played a lot of songs.

Yes he did! Many were shortened because they were stripped down versions. But the set list really could not have been more perfect. Well, maybe to play all songs off 'Whiskey', 'Field Songs' and 'Scraps...', but that is just me being greedy! :D

By the way, he did tell me he is recording a new solo album that he hopes will be out later this year but most likely in 2012.

Sad indeed. One can never have too many Lanegan bootlegs. :) Thanks anyway and glad you enjoyed yourself.
Did he play his new song... Deep Black Vanishing Train?

Yea, I talked to him about the album and he was pretty blase about it coming out this year. He shrugged his shoulders, smiled and said "probably next year...you know how these things are when recording albums". So...don't hold your breath for a release between now and Dec. 31. But, if these shows are a sign of things to come it will be well worth the wait.

The Floyd cover was a pretty cool rendition. Without mellotron...it still had the dreamy acoustic psych aspect but it also took on a new life of its own. A very sweet and definitely unique addition to the set.

Thanks for all the information redcloud.
I'm off to see him next month in Sydney and can't wait. Unfortunately he'll be with Isobel Campbell, but I'll take what I can get.

Here's a download of the Seattle show......I haven't listened to it yet so I'm not sure of the quality but I think it'll be ok.
