Spectrum the Lexington 17/05
Wow, what a gig!
Started with a corking version of Johnny Ace. Did War Sucks, Che, When Tomorrow Hits, How You Satisfy Me, Revolution, Suicide but I have to say that the real highlight for me was when they did Angel, especially when he did the 'bad luck' bit from Lou Reed's Street Hassle. It was really beautiful.
Good sound at venue. Decent support band. Splendid night, highly recommended.

It was good but not great. Very packed venue. Supported by a really young band, all 18 years old, from Rugby called The Anteloids who are I really liked. Touches of Wooden Shjips, S3, Velvets, early Floyd-ish in places. Most groovesome and a nice surprise.
Spectrum was not loud enough and it took a while to really pick up. Nothing outstanding. Even 'When Tomorrow Hits' didn't really hit me that hard. It was great hearing it and other songs like Revolution, Angel etc etc but it didn't kick the gut if you know what I mean. Few moshers down the front for Revolution. During Suicide, the last song, there seemed to be something happening down the front which Sonic wasn't too happy about.
He came away from his instruments to have a word with a guy down the front a couple of times, not sure whether it was to do with the guy getting in the way of something when he was dancing around right at the front (the stage was only a couple of feet high), or whether he was taking pics, no idea, but whatever it was it seemed to be pissing Sonic off. Then, and I've never ever seen this at a gig, he jumped down off stage put his hands on the guys shoulders, face to face, and pushed him backwards about 10 feet towards the side wall, basically getting him out and away from the front.
Back on stage he said to the guy, through the heavily reverbed mic, something like "I told you/asked you nicely". All this whilst Suicide was still buzzing away. He then thanked the rest of the crowd and hopped off stage and was gone. The band carried on the song for a while longer then that was it.
Nice to hear those songs again but wished I'd have gone to the Moon Duo gig on the other side of London instead.
(met a nice guy who frequents these parts, as well as the Scream forum and Head Heritage too. Chatting to him outside about music and he asked "are you Johnnyboy?". Hahaha, no idea how he knew that! If you're reading - nice meeting ya!)

Fantastic night
Jonny Ace
Lord I don't even know my name
Angel
Che
HYSM
WTH
Revolution
War Sucks
Suicide
As above great venue, great sound.
Also absolutely packed
Truncated version of Suicide, PK did one part way through - altercation with crowd?
Spoke to him briefly afterwards - first time since Leeds Warehouse in 1992! - nice lad. Also spoke to the drummer outside, any new LP on horizon? - he didn't know ... PK very busy.
This guy is my all time musical hero, but it has to be said that marvelous as these nights are, there is an element of nostalgia to it. Grateful for Angel and Lord/Name on the list, but (as said many times) new material please PK. Wish he could work his own stuff rather than mixing whoppers like MGMT.

Maybe its work like MGMT which allows him to do the Spectrum stuff, which I guess isn't hugely lucrative. Most of us have to make compromises in life and I guess SB is no different.KingHarry wrote:

Re: Spectrum the Lexington 17/05
Don't doubt that, and don't argue with him making a living out of it. God knows he's admirably eschewed musical commercialism for long enough - EAR ain't a bad example(!) - but when you say "allows him to do the Spectrum stuff", what are you referring to - brief irregular (UK) tours and 1 EP in x number of years?
Anyway, I'm not slagging PK - he is fuking ace. Just always been a regret that the S3 back catelogue is so brief, for such a landmark band, and we are left awaiting drip-drip new peerless Spectrum material.

Re: Spectrum at the Lexington last night
So no further update on what happened during Suicide, then? From where I was standing it looked like the whole thing may have been set off by someone aiming a camera right into Sonic's face. I saw a red beam on his face followed by a bright flash. I might be totally wrong though as I don't think it was the guy who Sonic had the issue with who took the photo. Anyway, it was all a bit weird, as was the whole night in a way. As Johnnyboy as already mentioned above I freaked him (as well as me) out a bit by "recognising" him from his various posts alone after talking to him for only about ten minutes. It just goes to show how much information we put out there and also how much we remember without realising it. Anyway, although weird it was nevertheless a great night and it was good to meet Johnnyboy at last after feeling, subconsciously, like I've known him for ages! (Shame we had to call it a night in the bar downstairs when we did, I could have easily carried on having a drink and a laugh with you and Ewan)

Re: Spectrum at the Lexington last night
I was about three rows from the front. I saw all this stuff happening with this kid, well, a guy about my age, 25. As the band came onstage he shouted "Play something fucked-up." Followed by "Fucked Up Inside!" Wrong band mate.
Basically him and his mate were pissed-as, too pissed for a Tuesday night! He obviously thought he was Ian Curtis reincarnated as he was dancing with his elbows flailing all over the place. I was forced to move from my spot or I would have got elbowed / punched. He (accidentally) punched a lady in the back who was leaning over the stage and she shoved him (really pushed the guy) back. He took no notice of that. During Revolution he was jumping up and down right in front of Sonic's keys. I though they were gonna fall off and could see them wobbling precariously. Sonic leaned over the front row and (presumably) asked him to chill out. He didn't. Sonic then asked his mate to sort him out. Nothing happened. I'm not sure why exactly but he came off stage, took the guy by the shoulders and pushed him way back telling him to get out. Some nodded and clapped as the guy sheepishly left.
Funniest though, was that during the encore bit of Suicide the guy made his way back towards the stage with his two fingers in the air, pointed at Sonic. As people were clapping and cheering he moved nearer and nearer and to the stage and gradually his two-finger-salute was lowered until he was right back at the front again clapping with everyone else!! I thought it was hilarious.
However he did know ALL the words and was singing along so...
I think he was probably an MGMT fan first....

A creature my friends and I refer to as a 'jiggling twat'. They can totally ruin your night, particularly if the place is crowded. Wankers - in the same bracket as those who turn up to shout conversations with their mates towards the front during the main set.

I'm Ben, the guitarist in The Anteloids. Cheers for the interest ands for watching us. Our next show is at The George Tavern on June 3rd. You can see details and what-not on the bandprofile section of our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Antel ... 1292310680callthedoctor wrote:Anybody know if that support band is playing again soon?
Thanks!

Freaked in a good way I should add, haha. It was all good. Had a great night out (bar the average gig) and yes, could of stayed longer but the long commute home put paid to that. One of my trains was cancelled and the next one was an all-stopper. Home in bed at 2am, up at 6am for work = ouch! Good meeting you too. Funny little world isn't it.ABOCA wrote:As Johnnyboy as already mentioned above I freaked him (as well as me) out a bit by "recognising" him from his various posts alone after talking to him for only about ten minutes. As for Sonics nemesis. He did look like he was having fun, and he was really into it, but it's never good when you're ruining other peoples nights. The venue was tiny and packed so that kind of moshing around wasn't the greatest idea. I had a feeling Sonics beef was to do with the guy interferring with his equipment........quite amusing how he sheepishly worked his way back to the front again.
Ben from the Anteloids - great support gig by you guys! I spoke to your singer/bassist outside to say how much I enjoyed your set and sound (are you brothers or just look kinda similar?). Nearly bought one of your cd's but he said it was older stuff and you have an album coming out at some point. I'll drop through a line as he did mention sending a copy through. All the best and enjoy your next gig.
Re: Spectrum at the Lexington last night
went to see spectrum last night. great gig, although they didn't play an encore (suicide). sound was excellent, but I had the impression pete was not really feeling well. sweating all over after 2 songs and walking like he was suffering a hernia...
did he drop the lyrics during 'angel' (the heroin lines) in previous gigs?
after spectrum came gonjasufi, and my espectations were pretty high, cos i like 'the califs tea party' a lot. I go to see bands for 25 years or so but never seen anything like this. it was the worst gig i ever witnessed. it's really hard to discribe how bad it was!
anyway, enjoyed pete and the band a lot, nice show!

Re: Spectrum at the Lexington last night
Thanks Johnnyboy.
ha, yeah we're twin brothers, a beneficial factor for our band i think. Yeah that'll be cool, we're more than happy to send them out to anyone who wants one. It will have most of the stuff we played on the 17th on it, plus much more.
cheers man, should be a cool gig.

no Undo the Taboo? no "new" inst jams??
Re: Spectrum at the Lexington last night
re undo the taboo, I put down the set list from memory the following morning - and realised it didn;t match up to the scan of the actual scrawled list. I don't recall them doing Taboo though - but alcohol had been taken!
