So, you reckon that's the new album?

Freedom
Won't Get To Heaven (update of Life Is A Problem)
and
DIO C'O

were particularly beautiful. Is there any other band that could play such a well received set of almost completely new material?

Blimey, the whole of the new album presumably? What was the line up? Any support?

Let's get annoying bit over. The audience. Quite a lot of fucktards. One bloke that shouted about Jason being his hero but then promptly talked thru the quiet bits until someone (give that man a medal) lamped him. Or at least that is what I think happened, it was over quickly and I was trying (and succeeding) to ignore it.

Then there was some ghastly slag who had overdosed on liquid eyeliner who kept slurring bits of Come Together, but sadly she didn't know the words so she lay on the stage and touched Jasons legs... She then loudly offered him oral sex... Classy!!! She clearly flunked Finishing School! I channelled my inner Maggie Smith and gave her a withering look down my nose. It was lost on her.

A very odd gentleman shouted at Jason that he smelt of Old Spice. People are strange.

Other than that it was a loud and appreciative audience that were definitely giving the love.

What was the band line up? I see John Coxon is there.

There was no support (yippee!!! I like support bands but wasn't in the mood tonight). They hit the stage just before 8:30 and left around 10:30 (I could be a bit out with timings as wasn't really watching the clock).

The line-up was the A&E gang -so fucking happy.

The lighting was beautiful but fairly understated by Spiritualized standards. They had giant clear glass light bulbs -some hanging down, some standing on the stage - they were bloody effective.

The new songs...... Well what can I say.... STUNNING!!! I'm pretty dreadful at picking things up at first listen so could be proved wrong (please please do not take my word as gospel) but what I heard was a huge progression from A&E, I think I might have just heard my favourite Spiritualized album... Obviously it is hard to say after just one listen but it just sounded amazing. It had all the usual Spz trademarks but it was laden with hooks and melodies. I'm doing a terrible job of describing what I heard - sorry! My brain is spinning out. I'm too excited. I'm never gonna be able to sleep.

Here are a few things that are definite:
1 It sounds nothing like Lazer Guided Melodies
2 There was plenty of sonic layering
3 Fragile broken hearted love songs abound
4 It could be their most commercial album ever
5 I loved every song but 'Mary' blew my fucking mind.

ROLL ON MARCH.

My brief thoughts on tonight's show:

- Sat upstairs at the front of the balcony for the first time at Queen's Hall and I'm so glad we did. a) I'm too old for this standing around business. b) A great, unimpaired view of the whole band. c) Avoiding the long-haired c*nt near the front who was causing grief. If someone did lamp him (and his twatting around did seem to stop very suddenly), that person deserves a round of applause.

- I did not expect a whole main set of new songs! I'm guessing this is why they kept the Edinburgh & Leamington shows, as almost practice concerts to see how their new material plays live. I would LOVE it if, after last playing their most famous album in full, Spiritualized have just treated us to a preview of their new one in full. My memory is terrible for picking out songs, all I can say is that the first one was great (especially how it broke down into free jazz noise, then started up again); there was a very overtly gospel song; and the last song was utterly sublime. If the new album was indeed played in full and in order tonight, it flows very well.

- After the main set, the choices of encore songs were mostly outstanding (a euphoric Shine A Light, Cheapster sounding better than ever, especially when it broke down into the chugging riff of Take Me To The Other Side, O Happy Day in full extended glory). I could have done without Good Times, I would have taken Lay Back In The Sun ahead of that, but it was still good.

- I have no idea whether they will do the same set at RAH (which I'm travelling down for and am stupidly excited about). I actually hope that the career-spanning set they play will be a one-off for that venue. If not, I'll just have to admire the massive balls that Jason has if he decides to preview a whole new album at the bloody Royal Albert Hall!

An amazing concert 8 songs until Life Is Problem, my 19th gig and right up there with best. Spent the last hour upstairs at the corner of the stage dancing with two girls and egging the spaceman on, he kept feeding back to us. A memory that will last forever.

awesome gig, the missus had one word . . . OUTSTANDING!!!

definitely gonna get tickets for Glasgow :P

as others have said, a couple of twats at the front, if you like the band so much DON'T FUCKING CHAT DURING THE SONGS!! Dunno if someone lamped the dark haired twat, it was his missus who kicked it off having a barney with the slapper who kept offering Jason oral sex and then he joined in, but i didn't see him after that. Maybe he got removed by the staff...

awesome return

bit dangerous/foolhardy playing your new album live this day & age 6months before release, but a wonderful thing nonetheless

great to see I Am What I Am back 2. had actually been thinking about that song last week.

looking forward to hear new spz songs..

I also thought it was a bit insane playing new material only! I enjoyed it, but my friend didn't, and the feedback from other people on the train back to Glasgow was mixed too.
It's never easy judging new material - I really really liked some of the songs, some less, but anyway it's now a matter of when do I get to hear them again :D

And on the topic of annoying people in the audience... a couple at the front spent most of the gig snogging. The most bizarre sight was a guy with tweezers plucking his beard! At least he wasn't noisy/annoying I suppose...

Really enjoyed the Gig. Was the first time i had seen Spz since the Acoustic Mainlines tour.

First off - That French couple down the front seemed to stalk me wherever i went last night. They were in the same pub as me before the gig (snogging), sat on the stage in front of me (snogging) and now i hear throughout the gig (snogging). Tragedy is, she was LOVELY and he was an absolute bawbag with TERRIBLE facial hair. Seriously, a strong breeze would have whisked that off in no time.

Secondly, who saw the boy in the Christian death leathers reading A BOOK whilst sat on the stage? WTF?!!

Finally, REALLY enjoyed the new stuff. Have been critical of some of the more recent stuff (too many wishy washy conversations with "The Boy Upstairs" for my liking) but from what i heard last night Jason has turned LGM or Pure Phase on us. Delighted.

Really good gig, guys.

just a few thoughts on last night ,Queens Hall ,like it ,I was upstairs on the balcony looking across to Jason ,fantastic view,
saw a few over excited assholes down the front ,but they didn`t really spoil my enjoyment of a quite unusual Spiritualized show ,can only real think off one similar show in my gig going career of 25 yrs. where someone played so many new songs, but it was good, some of the new material sounded fantastic ,but its hard to really comment on it when their was so much of it ,but it seemed to me that some of the rootsy/country sound from th A&E period has been dispensed with -a good thing for me- and a more reg/trad. Spiritualized sound returned to the first track seemed to be a 10 min. jam on the one riff ,really got the head nodding along and as you would expect some of the rhythms were superb I didn`t recognize I Am What I Am but I did with the Life Is A Problem one ,

as for the encores ,great to hear Sway and Good Times haven`t hard them live in a long time ,and Shine A light and Take Me To The Other Side Were mind blowing as per always ,roll on next March ,seems a long ways just now...

Sooooo, given that they've got a big fuck-off orchestra and a choir at RAH, do we think this is going to be the format for that show as well???

I have my doubts, despite Jason's legendary fidelity to one setlist throughout a tour.

Maybe an opening section with a mix of new stuff and old stuff done by the band, then a second half of full blown oldies with the orchestra...thoughts???

Yeah! The guy shouting down the front was a tool! Think he was still wearing his Grey work shirt, lol. Glad he got lamped....I must admit to not being overly loving towards the first set...But Hey Little Girl, Mary & Dio Ce were outstanding...Things got rather loud for the oldies set which was fabulous. Glad i decided to go at the last minute....Mary & Dio Ce are definate singles IMHO!

Loved the minimal lighting & the 2 girls were on top form. Felt sorry for them during Take me to the Other Side! a good 10-12 minute wait to get back on stage for Happy Day!

Pretty sure in 2003 J and company came Stateside and played most of Amazing Grace before the record was officially released. I recall a hand full of small club shows. Didn't I see them do this at the Bowery Ballroom?

The setlist posted to the first page got cropped and you can't see the last 2 lines - it shows 11 songs too
I didn't count as they got played though and see everyone now reporting 10!

I could be wrong, but I don't think I Am What I Am was the old version we know and love - I certainly don't recall it being played. Awesome gig overall; the first song in particular was incredible - the best Jason has come up with since the nineties, IMHO.

Here are the notes I scribbled/thoughts I had during the concert, for what they're worth (song titles as per the setlist posted earlier):

Little Girl - awesome noise breakdown halfway through, song returns and becomes a driving one chord groove with the repeated refrain "Dream on/love of my life"

Hey Little Girl - all I remember is the repeated line "Before we ride into the sun, get it on"

You Get What You Deserve - very Electric Mainline-esque intro; "I lost all my direction/I used up all my intention"

Too Late - I thought it was LAGWAFIS when it started. Nope, it's Mama Said. Very nice.

(Either YGWYD or Too Late also sounded a bit like Lord Let It Rain on Me - can't remember which and my notes are unclear at this point)

Heading For The Top - Doggen was going INSANE on this song. Very jerky and bass driven if I recall correctly. Fantastic.

Freedom - intro pinched from Lord Can You Hear Me? "Freedom is yours if you want"

I Am What I Am - actually don't have any notes for this, but as I said, I'm pretty sure it wasn't the song he's recorded before....

Won't Get To Heaven - or Life is A Problem. I'm not overly fond of this song, TBH, but it sounded a lot better than it did on the last tour.

Mary - can't remember much, other than that it was very good; bluesy perhaps.

Poppy/So Long/Whatever it's called - quite, well, "poppy" I guess. I remember him singing "Help Me Lord" a lot. Great song, but I must confess I thought it fell into the Stop Your Crying/Soul on Fire trap of repeating the chorus far too many times at the end.

---------

Then we got Sway, Shine A Light, Good Times, Take Me to the Other Side and Oh Happy Day. I'd stopped taking notes by then

I was caught out with the 8.30pm start time, so the first 5 minutes of track one are missing.
There wasn't a lot of time to get set up + mess about with recording levels / choose a spot etc but think I got away with a half decent recording.
The volume recording level was definately top end during the louder tracks but thankfully no distortion.
After trying various software / mastering, the tracks either sounded the same or not as good, so decided to leave them exactly as they are.

Feel free to share anywhere you like and in any format you like.

Many thanks to Pontiac B and to Stephen for their excellent RAH and Leamington Spa recordings, and cheers to those who took the pictures included.

Am more gutted than anyone at missing the start, but these things happen from time to time, all part of the fun I suppose!
