Re: Banjo
albert hall no?
“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness
'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.
'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.
'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”

Re: Banjo
Surely not that random, as he gets a credit on the album where he also played it.angelsighs wrote:yup the banjo part was played at the RAH show, and randomly it was by the fella from the Magic Numbers!

I don't remember a banjo at the RAH, though I could easily have missed it. Listening to the recording of that gig I thought the banjo line from the the LP was played on a guitar, as it doesn't have the characteristic twang and snap of a banjo. To me it still sounds like an electric guitar, run through something like a compressor to give it a slightly clipped sound.
I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

It was just strange seeing him walk on stage and thinking... damn, I recognise him from somewhere...
it was definitely a banjo

Re: Banjo
How strange! I was standing (although often technically leaning) downstairs at that gig, and though I didn't have a good view of the stage, I was soaking up the music in a gloriously blissful state. I then listened to the superb bootleg of the gig loads both before and since the album came out.
I remember the first time I heard the studio versions - the banjo really stood out to me on the album - it seemed such an unlikely instrument, yet it very much complemented the song, though on paper I'd not have believed it before I heard it.
I guess I just assumed that line was played by a guitar on the live version. And I still don't think the banjo on the live gig sounds much like the instrument heard on the album, but I've no idea on how you'd mic up/amplify a banjo for a huge ensemble like that, since I've only ever seen one live used in the classic bluegrass setup, which is relatively quiet and usually involves 1 mic with the ensemble around it moving closer when their part needs to get louder.

I know nil about tech specs, not being a musician, but I do love that sound. And i love to hear it in rock n' roll. I think it can work quite well wherever you use it, as long as you know what yr doing.
A lot of my friends play banjo, bluegrass, "freak-folk" type stuff, or sometimes just long banjo jams.
Mojo, I used to think that was banjo at the tail end of "feel like going home"
Next I would love to see Jason bring his dulcimer out on stage!
Yeah!

Re: Banjo
woah now it's my turn to be confused... always thought it was banjo at the end of Feel Like Going Home? I think a banjo is in the credits to the album isn't it?
love the banjo on Anything More too.

Re: Banjo
haha, y'know between the time I posted that and you posted, I gave it a listen and said out loud to myself, "hmm! maybe that IS banjo, there!"
But then I couldn't tell again, and I don't have the liner notes here.
Your are right about it, I bet, angelsighs.
I never listen to "anything more"
But will now..

Re: Banjo
I'm surprised to hear about more banjo in Spiritualized's music! I know it's a slightly unfair cliche, but to me the banjo is one of the many (potentially irritating) instruments that can inserted into such witticisms as:
The definition of a gentlemen is someone who can play the xxx but chooses not to.
Though I guess having heard about all the excess surrounding the making of Let it come down I can imagine during the recording of the serene Anything more Jason listening back to a take and pronouncing "think this needs a banjo?!?"
