No Kev, but no Kid Millions - some new guy who was really great. Coxon and Doggen were there as well. I couldn't tell if it was the same keyboardist that's been playing for the past year or not, but the new bassist was great.

AMAZING show. I think it was the best sound I've witnessed at a Spiritualized show. It was so beautiful too. Hundreds of white roses lining the front of the stage in this breathtaking theater. It was overwhelming at times. I was sitting in the upper balcony and the sound was perfect. The only annoying thing was that people seemed to be getting up a lot. The entire row in front of me was gone by the end of the encore.

Encore was: Out of Sight, SPREAD YOUR WINGS, and Oh Happy Day.

Celebrity sightings: John C Riley, Moby, Zoe Deschanel, some guy from Entourage, DIANE KEATON (?!?), and Robyn Hitchcock.

I'm staying at the hotel, so they let us into the rooftop after party, which has fucking incredible views of LA. The band eventually came out and seemed to be very excited about the whole evening, even Jason. He was posted up at a chair swarming with young, beautiful LA girls.

Merch was great! 5 new shirts, all with the dates of these shows on them. Merch guys were wearing lab coats. Posters for these shows were cool, but might be gone already. Little pill bottles with candy hearts in them. Show tote bags too. It's good to finally see new merch!

Just a great night. Definitely in my top 5 Spz shows.

=the best bit!!!

Very exciting news. Sounds like a mindblowing experience. Love that Out Of Sight was played too. Hope they have the new merch up on the merch store (is it still running?) soon. Would love to get the poster!!

One question though - is the bassist also a new guy and not Brad Truax from Interpol?

Thanks for your great report toomilk!

Last night a St. Valentine's miracle occurred so I hope you'll bear with a little story... this was my seventh time seeing Spiritualized since 2001 at the Wiltern. At that show I was seated up in the balcony but every time since then has been general admission and I've managed to get in the front row. This was a seated show as well, but I arrived early out of habit (I was alone, on a romantic Valentine's date with myself). I wandered around the Ace a bit - appreciating the giant 'Jesus Saves' sign up on the roof - and got the first spot in line, followed by a girl I recognized from the Wiltern 2012 show. Shortly thereafter I saw Mr. Spaceman arrive (in an MC5 shirt), taking photos and video of the marquee as he approached. He lingered at the entrance awhile but I didn't go up to him (I'd already met him and got an autograph last year at Coachella... for some reason he asked if I was from Texas and we shared an awkward fist bump  )

This was my first time inside the theater and I was very impressed. The giant heart and white roses onstage were a great touch. I knew my seat was up in the balcony but I hadn't realized I would be all the way in the back corner - literally the last seat in the last row. Still, it was a beautiful view, and I was thrilled to be there. The upside was I would be able to stand up without blocking anyone, though I was one of the few doing so as the show began with a gorgeous 'Ladies and Gentlemen'. All of a sudden during 'Come Together' a theater employee comes up and shouts "I have a front row seat for you!" I was confused for a second then shouted back (like a teenybopper I'm sure) "Wow, really?!?!" He escorted me all the way down to the front row on the left side - a seat that directly faced J Spaceman. "The last shall be first" as the Bible tells us... I couldn't believe my luck as "I Think I'm in Love" began. Soon enough another guy was shown to the empty seat next to me; he was clearly overwhelmed/wasted and kept saying "I'm gonna die" . I'm still not sure why there were seats available in the front row but I am eternally grateful they picked me

Even without the surprise VIP experience this would probably have been the best Spiritualized show I've seen, possibly the best concert I've been to period. As mentioned above the sound was amazingly clear... the arrangements and the gospel choir were perfect. Unlike my neighbor I was entirely sober but I suspect that was contrary to appearances - I'll admit tears were shed at several points  . It's hard to even pick a highlight because it was so good from start to finish. Like a lot of people 'Ladies and Gentlemen' was my introduction to the band in the late 90s, and it's always been a favorite album... after this show I only have more appreciation for it

Thanks for reading

There is a recording of this on Dimeadozen. I'm grabbing it at the moment and will make it available from my dropbox for a week or so. It'll be FLACs though, so can somebody make MP3s for those who need them?

Drop me a PM with your email address if you want an invite to the folder. There are 18 files in the folder, 16 songs, 1 information file and a Flac Fingerprint file.

Alternatively, you might be able to get at the files from here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8ohfxpfjphfkmm0/iI5xQ1EJAN, but I'm not sure that will work. If you see less than 18 files, try again a little later as the data is still uploading as I type this.

Stunning, powerful, beautiful, and overwhelming...not to mention the amazingly beautiful theater.
From a balcony seat perspective last night (which was awesome), I was like a mischievous child knowing that tonight I will be down on the floor.

It had been a few years since I saw Spiritualized last (at the Echo), and I was reminded last night why they are perhaps my favorite band to see in a live setting. From the first time I saw them in 2001, to last nights show (and tonight), I am thankful and grateful that they have been a huge part of my life. Sonically and visually mind-blowing.
May the journey continue...enough said!

Holy shit, I was the guy seated right next to you in the Playing With Fire shirt, and the vaporizer. By the time you got the front row ticket and yelled "Holy Shit" in disbelief I was pretty intoxicated, and added to an incredible surreal experience. The sound was just as good from up above, as half of the time I was adequate in just putting on my sunglasses and floating into the sound of this amazing record. I definitely broke through at least a few layers on consciousness last night. And because you left an empty seat, my 6'2 tall inch frame was able to stretch my legs a bit. I'll be going again tonight probably dressed as Hunter Thompson.

What's really funny is that last night I wanted to be "The highest person at the show", and when you left to sit front row my wish was granted. I was able to sit in the highest seat in the venue lol. The universe certainly has a keen sense of humor.

 Janus I'm pretty sure the guy next to you was Mr. "I'm gonna die", not me. Glad you enjoyed the show though and have fun at tonight's. I wish I was going

Also to add to the list of famous people sightings, I didn't recognize anyone up front but on the way out I'm pretty sure I saw Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth) in the lobby

Suskind, good work fella!

Alternative mp3 link here...

This time, I've not processed in any way other than converted and tagged. Audio looks full and, er, tasty enough. Not listened yet myself either but look forward to this later!

Massive thanks to BLG for the heroic recording and super-fast share.

Shout out to anyone who made either or both the nights, sounds like it was some trip. Jealous! 8)

Bloody hell! It looks like the DropBox thing works  . Thanks for the MP3s suskind and Barry for the MP3s. BLG, (Bill) the taper is a good guy. He has a top quality rig and knows what to do.

I've been listening to 'Spread Your Wings' on rotation since I grabbed the torrent from Dimeadozen. By the sounds of last night they'll need to play 'Feel Like Goin' Home' to better that encore. One can but hope, it has only been 19/20 years since the song was recorded :( .........

The second night's performance was much stronger, but people around me fucked with the experience. I had much better seats tonight, but it was ruined by a constant stream of people walking to the bathroom/bar and by the fucking STAFF PRO flashing lights at people who had their phones on. Talkers too. Just a bunch of typical LA shitholes.

Despite all my hate towards this, it was another stellar performance. Just mind blowing. Sound was again staggering. Band was much tighter and only fucked up a few minor parts.

I recorded both nights, but I looked down a few times tonight to see my recorder peaking so the second recording might sound a little blow out. I'll try cleaning them up a little big and separating the tracks and see if they're worth posting or not.

May the light of a thousand Staff Pro flashlights shine on me...

Oh, and the band was at the bar on the roof of the hotel again tonight. Jason with his entourage of Stevie Nicks wannabes.

Notable that the drummer and keyboard player had British accents. Very nice guys.

The guy from The Magic Numbers (who played banjo during the RAH gig in 2011[?]) was there too.

I'd also like to thank everyone for the reports and the links to the music. It makes for fantastic reading. It also makes me realise how much I love this board and its contributors.

Really wish I could have been there. The venue looks stunning. Hopefully it will get released as mentioned by a few others. Ideally, I wish they would bring the show to the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. But judging from the pics and reports, it may pale in comparison.

I look forward to listening to the recordings over the next few days. What a treat!

Thanks again.

Can relate and agree for the most part with toomilk's review for night two.

Another stunner of a show! Had a better seat on the floor (row P) right side on the aisle, and had a perfect view of the stage. Luckily not many people wanting to leave for the bar/restrooms once the show started, but there were several annoying drunk talkers somewhere behind me. Was happy on the several occasions when the ferocious cacaphony of beautiful noise shut them up and seemingly silenced them for a little while. And yes, the ushers were annoying with their little flashlights, but the alternative would have been to see a bunch of bozo's holding up their cell phone/camera's all night. So maybe the ushers were the lesser of two evils? Anyways, I'm guilty of snapping a few pics, but waited until the encore to do so very discreetly.

As for the drummer...the guy was absolutely incredible! His facial expressions at several points spoke volumes, and I tended to focus on him for a majority of the show. Hoping there will be some video footage eventually, as the theater had the perfect ambience for the shows. Until next time, I'll be floating in space...

We were in the presence of something remarkable, but my heart hurts that it's over. I sat front row, in front of Jason on night 1, my jaw dropped when "Spread Your Wings" was added to the set. Second night had way more energy thanks to the help of 3 incredible drunk guys (John, Jason, and Clay) who sat in the seats that I was in the prior night. They invited me to hang out with me at the Ace hotel with them after the show, they were really great people (every LA native I met was a complete self-absorbed asshole, these guys flew in from Colorado) and I got to meet Jason and Jonny (the new drummer, who also played drums on "Amazing Grace") closing the night! Absolutely incredible.

My audio documentation.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/525 ... -02-15.zip

I think it's a good listen. There's a small break during "No God.." and it is in two files with raw cuts. I didn't cut "Home of the Brave / The Individual." See info file for details.

Yes, as the reviews read… it was pretty spectacular. I think I enjoyed the 2nd night here more than the Radio City show. J's voice is always so beautiful to hear. The band was great. Sound guys did a nice job. Theater/staff were fantastic. Spoke to Doggen a bit after - he's a good guy as were the other few crew/players that I met. And bonus for a couple of free backstage beers, few empty seats around me and not paying $20 to park across the street for this one… and the disco ball stayed attached to the ceiling.

Shared here until 2/25/14. If a better source doesn't show up on Dime, I'll offer this one up.

mywhitenoise - I can dig up Santa Cruz.

Be advised, the events that took place over the weekend and the use of drugs and alcohol are not advocated by, or endorsed by the administration of this website. Also, it's quite long.

Pure Phase was my favorite Spiritualized record. It encapsulates everything I would want in a Spaceman record, from elements of Spacemen 3 to the melodies and epic song structures. I never quite understood the depth and fandom of LAGWAFIS, but I also understood that Spiritualized shows are not to be missed.

Last April, Spiritualized played a show in Joshua Tree immediately following their Coachella performance. It was the first show in a long time where I felt everything was within alignment. After a cannabis tolerance break and my pounds lost due to exercise and a recent juicing diet, the show was very much a present for myself that paid off in full. That weekend was 4/20, and because of record store day and an all day pass to my local comedy club I would be high for 17 hours. That Tuesday I would see Sonic Boom with Will Carruthers at my local venue, thus bringing my Spaceman experience full circle and the closest I will ever come to seeing a Spacemen 3 performance. Obviously, the Spiritualized performance overshadowed the Spectrum performance despite my overall preference at the time to Spectrum's Soul Kiss Glide Divine over Spiritualized's body of work.

I would later go back to Joshua Tree for the Desert Stars festival this past September. On the drive in, I was blasting Pure Phase as I raced past landscaped that synchronized with the instrumental bridge of the Pure Phase record during what was the most beautiful Sunset I've ever seen. In addition to this, I was dressed as Hunter S. Thompson to commemorate my favorite writer, and to display visually what one could expect from my pattern of behavior for the rest of the evening.

The obvious reaction is to ask why dress up, when at best you would tarnish the legacy of someone as revered to the freak community as one Hunter Thompson. More important than anything else, my father was my best friend who unfortunately passed away on July 18th, 2006. After he passed I was introduced to Hunter's literary work and was drawn to that voice. I would later discover his birthday is July 18th, 1937. Although my father and Hunter couldn't be more opposite to one another, I figured that I fall somewhere in between. To figure exactly where, I attempt to walk in his shoes from time to time while severely intoxicated.

Sometimes the universe has a way of giving us exactly what we didn't know we needed. This night was no exception. Immediately after walking into the venue I was offered any substance I wanted. Having never done psychedelics other than Salvia and knowing I had a 3 hour long drive after the concert, I opted to take some mushrooms to keep for a later time. Vicariously, I credit Spiritualized for the gift.

Fast forward to this weekend, I once again was coming off of a tolerance break, and ready to ride the album all the way through. For those wondering, the venue is as elaborate as the pictures show. Although it's only a 1500 capacity venue it feels absolutely massive and grand. Once again, upon my arrival one can't help but feel that the powers that be have fallen into alignment to make this weekend happen. It's as though the theater was upgraded solely for the purpose of this set, every sacrifice an accoutrement to add to the atmosphere of an ethereal experience.

My aim was to be the highest person at the show. I started with a blunt, and a glass of absinthe. Once inside, I was seated in the upper balcony directly next to the last seat in the very last row. Sometime after my second bowl of my vaporizer, an event organizer asked if the gentlemen in the corner seat was seated by himself or with me. He answered that he was by himself, and got to sit front row. I felt as though I was exactly where I was supposed to be, and did not let that either frighten, or bring down my high.

The performance exceeded my expectations, and served as a constant reminder of just why this record is arguably the apex of Spaceman's body of work. If there's anything to stress, it is as such. The sound was absolutely perfect, to the point of allowing me to close my eyes and washed in the waves of the sound. It was more of a spiritual pilgrimage than a concert event. In addition, after listening to the playback and some of the other performances on the east coast, I have to give a subjective opinion to say that this felt like Spaceman accomplished and achieved his vision by tweaking and adding the little things. The extended section of 'All of my Thoughts' come to mind, or the extended closing bridge in 'Stay with Me'. This record came to life and was fully realized.

My only regret is that I didn't take those mushrooms. However, on the second nights I donned my Hunter Thompson outfit and lost my fly swatter due to those damn bats. I did however, smoke a fat blunt while walking from the metro to the entrance. Security was very lax, obviously, otherwise I probably would not have been able to bring in my vaporizer. However, I don't recommend you stuff a grapefruit down your crotch in plain view near the entrance. If you do, you'll just get accosted by a door guy. This is particularly important if you happen to don the attire of one of the patron saints of hedonism.

"Is that produce loaded?" I pictured myself as the alchemist, busy in an unkempt basement in order to splice the right amount of produce and illegal substances that can provide nourishment and enlightenment. "I have other party favors for that, man". He let me off with the notion that I please not bring the grapefruit inside.

I had fun, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. If you get a chance to experience this, be yourself and don't hesitate.

Who was on Drums at LA Show?

Post by QueenBee »

The LA shows were wonderful. I think the 2/15 show was quite possibly the best Spiritualized show I have ever been to. Blew my mind. Wonderful experience, still reeling :)

Quick question though - who was on drums. I have never seen him before and he WAS INCREDIBLE. What a force of nature. Do any of you guys know who this powerhouse was?

Thanks!

Hi Sorry. New to the forum and not too good at this stuff! But was wondering who was on drums at the LA shows. Had never seen him but he was incredible.

Such a wonderful weekend, so grateful to go to both shows :)

one grumble about this whole thing.. is it me or is it getting kinda hard to keep track of the band members at the moment? I know Spz haven't been a 'proper band' since probably Pure Phase or something.. but it really is a revolving door now.. wonder why Kid Millions couldn't do this show? and they've had more bass players than Spinal Tap have had drummers (freak gardening accidents maybe?)

Jonny Aitken, he drummed on the Amazing Grace album. Funny story, I spoke to him after the second show (not realizing it, until I asked if where he was from), and he mentioned he hadn't played drums for 6 years until Jason called him up to do the shows!

Did he mention any details about the preparation for the shows?

For example did the electric band rehearse on their own in the UK before travelling to the US, how much time did they have with the local musicians, and what format did those rehearsals take?

Also are the instrumentalists and choir established LA ensembles, and does anyone know much about them and how Jason came to get them involved in the two concerts?

Finally did anyone catch the name of the production company/companies providing sound, lights etc? (I'm interested as many production houses that would be equipped to do a show of that size and complexity write up their side of the event on their websites or in specialist publications, usually giving an interesting insight into the tech side of things).
I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

Hello,

Many thanks for sharing the recording of Feb. 15. Is there any chance someone could possibly re-post this? Thank you!

No, I didn't ask about the rehearsal process.

I ran into a couple of the choir people downstairs, they're from LA and part of different choir groups. I'm not exactly sure how Jason selected them.

On the Acoustic Mailines show there were different choirs on the East Coast and West Coast. As far as the E Coast choir went they spent a day with Jason getting to know the songs. Presumably that happens everywhere. Whether or not the recent choir were the same ones when Jason did shows from the Acoustic shows out west not sure.

I think Kid Millions had a gig to play in 20th of February, I think with Jim Sauter (sp?), not sure whether and how that affected his schedule though.
