Hammersmith Sep 18 - what will the set be?

Post by Feel So Sad »

Does anyone have any idea what the sets my be for the gigs next month? I expect plenty of the new album but what else? Also what would you really like to see played? I'd like a raucous Medication and a droney Lay Back in the Sun or Good Dope. It depend if there's horns or strings. Any ideas how big a band it's going to be? Any ideas at all really?

I'm not going sadly, but You Lie You Cheat really deserves to come back as a barnstorming live standard!

His radio interview from yesterday seems to suggest its going to be a reasopnable sized band as he wants to continue the momentum of the Ladies & Gents... style live show, but the last set of live shows from across the world had some really great songs as part of teh set, including some we hadn't seen for a long long time :D

When I heard that part of the interview, it made me really sad I can't get to the London gig. Spz with a larger ensemble of strings and / or brass is always really something special.

I wish I'd had more notice, plus time to save and make plans to get to the Apollo - now I've heard about that element, since I doubt the tour hinted at will include such a big ensemble.

It'll be interesting to see how much of those recent festival career-spanning setlists with orchestras, makes it into the upcoming gigs. Similarly how much of the new album will get played?

I guess hardcore fans would love a 2011 style full album plus bonus tracks type gig. On the other hand a few folks I know who saw the prior "electric only band" gigs, were clearly not as enthused as the lucky people who get to praise that amazing RAH performance!

Seems unfair the French are getting two gigs too...but not fair to blame Jason, since he can only play the gigs promoters are willing to put on.

Ah well, I've still got the new album to look forward to. They've done a remarkable job of keeping tight reigns on the few review promos doing the rounds, but just over a week to go now 8)

I think the London gig won't be too dissimilar to this summer's Primavera set, the arrangements with the orchestra take some working out and doing new songs would take a lot of time and rehearsal. As far as I'm aware, the rest of the tour will be just the band (there doesn't seem to be a lot of room in the circus tent in Paris :D ) so I would guess there will be more room for tunes from the new record. I'll be at both the French shows (I'll be wearing my Sam the space monkey t-shirt https://www.redbubble.com/people/dudepa ... ?p=t-shirt in Paris!) and am stoked to here the positive reviews of the record (I'm holding off listening until release day)

I'm hoping we get some/all of ANH in the set. After seeing The Founder Effect earlier in the year, and being blown away by Alan Wilkinson's sax, I'm up for the serious wig-out at the end of "The Morning After" (I'm guessing that's Alan playing on it). Maybe he'll be part of the line-up...

Sadly, i wont be able to attend the Sep 18 gig, but i am looking at catching them at SYNÄSTHESIE festival in Berlin , as they are the headliners of the festival.
Does anyone have any idea if i should expect a regular festival set of an hour + ? or since they are the festival headliners, they will do a full gig?

what do you reckon the chances are that Hammersmith will be the new album in full? with all the strings and that, why not?
if SHSL deserved that treatment, why not this one?

Tickets arrived today. The seating plan is:

So judging by that, I'm in three rows from the front, right in the middle.

I reckon it's gonna be the album in full. Especially as he's got the choir & strings with him.

We are going to be on tight timecales getting down to London after dumping our kids with some (very kind) friends.

Does anyone have any thoughts on when show time will be. Doors are 7.00pm It won't start before 8.00pm, surely?

So the missus said earlier. A band called Yak (I think, may have spelt that wrong). Apparently the singer used to be an antiques dealer that Jason used to buy furniture from, but he persuaded him to for a band or something.

Yak are the band Jason produced a couple of tracks for- it was mentioned in the Uncut feature when talking about what he's doing since the last record. from the link above it seems they have a connection to John Coxon too.

I saw them live a couple of years ago. Thought they were decent, very young but definitely had potential. Not averse to jamming the songs out and letting rip.

Just called the box office, and doors 7pm, Yak at 7.45 and Spiritualized at 8.45-10.45. May, of course, be subject to change.

Same here. Really disappointed circumstances are not on my side this time. When I went back to listen to SHSL recently, I realised I must have spent as much time (if not more) listening to that superb recording of the RAH gig, than I did listening to the record itself - having been blown away by that amazing gig in person.

Whilst it doesn't sound like tonight will be quite the same, in terms of playing the full album or revealing it prior to release - I'm just gutted I've not got to hear Jason play any of his big gigs with expansive ensembles recently.

I'm really envious of those folks lucky enough to hear his recent large scale performances, especially as I suspect I'll not have another chance to hear that for myself.

Also hearing the new tracks now fully fleshed out via J's meticulous studio process, rendered live - sounds like a really special experience. I guess we'll get a UK tour sometime next year, which is a very exciting prospect, but also a long long way away!

I hope everyone going has a great gig tonight. I'm not gonna jinx any chance of getting an opportunity to hear it memorialised in some way, by going down that rabbit hole...but I've got all available limbs crossed in anticipation

I too will be checking in here to hear all about it...

I should have the recording soon so we'll find out!

I put Hold On as the first track, but it was only the first verse of Hold On as kind of an intro, then he ended with the same thing. I'm wondering if this is to do with certain themes on the album, as well as losing his mother.

This was one of the best Spiritualized performances I have seen in many, many years. The opening with a snippet from Hold On segueing into Come Together via a guitar drone was epic. Shine A Light was played as a free-standing piece for the first in decades, with a pause before the band launched into Stay With Me. Playing the new LP in its entirety was a great decision. I was surprised with how well this was received by the audience. Sail on Through was a triumph as a set closer, but all the new tracks were excellent, with some pretty brutal free jazz noise/noise and strobe assaults featuring along the way

We had unbelievably good seats in the second row right in front of JP. The audience was pretty respectful too. There were very few talkers/screamers which was a pleasant change.

Really looking forward to a proper tour now.

Wow! I am a new old member, it’s been a while!

What an awesome show, the sound was good for yak apart from the vocals, which was a shame, but incredible for Jason and co. It was quiet for yak but the did fill up very nicely for spz, I had 3 empty seat next to me in row m (pre sale tickets) but then it was pretty full behind me, weird ticking policy , as I looked yesterday and got offered a single intone L!

The set list worked very well and had me in tears quite often! Maybe this success could be a rebirth rather than the end? (More comparisons with Dylan’s time out of mind) let’s hope so!

Catch them if you can? And let’s have the 2019 uk dates now please!

Trying to add a photo but they all seem to be too big, sorry!!

Can't believe what a beautiful set of classics and the new album I witnessed last night .
19 (I think) songs that sounded better than I've ever heard.
The new stuff was just amazing with the full works of band, choir and orchestra.
One downer, which I didn't realise, spoke to John Coxon at the gig and he's had to stop performing because of his hearing (tinnitus) becoming unbearable whilst playing .
Can't wait for next year's Spiritualized dates (hopefully). :)
