Mavis Staples

Post by jesus son »

This might be a good one.

De Montfort Hall, Leicester

Music Beyond Mainstream

Mavis Staples with support Jhelisa

Down in Mississippi
Sun, 20 Apr, 2008
Show approx: 19:30
Tickets: £14.50, £16.50
Concessions: Disabled 2 for 1

A unique concert featuring two amazing, powerful and soulful voices.

From her formative years with the Staples Singers, Mavis Staples
performed for the likes of JFK and Martin Luther King.

In her remarkable solo career, Mavis has worked her vocal magic on
gospel, folk, soul and blues, sharing stage and studio with everyone
from Prince and Dylan to Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin.

In this very special concert, the first lady of US gospel revisits Staples
Singers classics (I'll Take You There, Respect Yourself and more)
and songs from the Civil Rights era revisited on 2007's Ry Cooder
produced solo outing We'll Never Turn Back.

"A glorious baptism of deep-rooted soul and uplifting gospel
from a bona fide music legend! An almost superhuman ability to
implant the pure power of passion and emotion." Rolling Stone

A perfect foil for Mavis comes with support from Jhelisa and her
three piece band including acclaimed jazz pianist Robert Mitchell.

ya know i went to this tour in the states and hoenstly it really wasn't what i had the highest of hopes for.

it's more mavis and the backing band doing a rendition of "respect yourself" for a half hour. she didn't play anything from the 1960's or before. then they did a 20 minute take on The Bands 'take a load off...".

with that being said, i would still go see her again, i mean it is MAVIS STAPLES!

me.

p.s.- if anybody goes i would like to hear what you thought of the show. thanks .
