Sydney 16/01/2009 setlist, reviews, photos, etc

Post by Vancouver »

Hey all. The band were insane tonight. I've seen them several times over the past decade but this makeup of the band might be the best I've seen. Anyway, I have a review up on my blog and some pretty decent photos (including a shot of the setlist).

Review: http://www.a-reminder.org/music/?p=1266
Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/areminder/ ... 640062028/

And the setlist was pretty much the regular:

Amazing Grace
You Lie You Cheat
Shine A Light
Cheapster
Soul On Fire
Sweet Talk
Sitting On Fire
Walking With Jesus
Oh Baby
Rated X
I Think I’m In Love
Lay Back In The Sun
Death Take Your Fiddle
Life Is A Problem
Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
She Kissed Me (It Felt Like A Hit)
Come Together
Take Me To The Other Side
———
Lord Can You Hear Me

Can't wait to see them again tomorrow at ATP.

Just read at Vancouver's blog that the Sydney show was taped so it will hopefully be worth checking his blog again in a day or two. Let's hope that the Sydney ATP gets taped..nothing of the Mt Buller one seems to have surfaced at all.

I was pretty blown away all night but when I Think I’m In Love started up I was pretty much destroyed. In a good way. The band stretched out the opening movement of the song before swinging through the final part complete with the backing vocalists responding to Jason’s lines. Further destruction was thrust upon me when Lay Back In The Sun began. To hear this one live was unforgettable.
I gotta agree with this.. these two song were AMAZING very very moving..

Better gig then Melbourne, dont get me wrong, they were amazing in Melbourne, but the Sydney show just had something, maybe it was the venue, crowd, lighting i dont know but i was spent for a second time by the same band in 2 weeks

Cannot wait to see them again.

Just got back to Melbourne after the show in Sydney - was an awesome show, not quite as loud as Melbourne, but was worth the trip to hear Lord Can You Hear Me.

Having been at both gigs (Hifi and Metro) it seemed to me that the Melbourne gig was quite a bit better, just had that intangible something extra. I had the good fortune to talk to Doggen, Tom and (briefly) Jason after the Sydney show, and they all said there were sound problems on stage in Sydney which made things a little difficult. Jason particualrly remembered the Melbourne show as something pretty special.

All in all, was well worth the trip, here's hoping they make it back before 2012...

Hey guys, im the guy who left the comment on Vancouvers blog yesterday. Needless to say it was an amazing show and I'm well pleased that I got a good position right on the stage wall in front of Jason to watch the show. Have to say I'm less impressed that I had to leave before the encore but I'm on night shifts all week (was supposed to be at work at 11, got there at 12:30)

The recording isn't amazing, as anyone who tapes shows will tell you the best sound is not right by the stage.
I decided to compromise as I find there's always alot of talkers at shows at the metro for some reason and being in the sweet spot soundwise still sucks if all you get is someone chatting next to you all night.
In saying that I am happy with the result, I taped the mics to the barrier and pretty much left them for the duration of the show. There is some boxy echo which I believe comes from the aircon straight overhead.
Was anyone else freezing in there? coldest show I've ever been to!

Im not going to put the show on Dime till later in the week but I will put the show on megaupload in MP3 format later today :) I'll post the link here and send it through to Vancouver for his blog

Ok, here's a couple of tracks. I'll put the whole show show up later but feel free to sample these and make sure your happy with the quality.

Shine A Light.mp3 (9.8 MB)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=751PXEXE
Sitting On Fire.mp3 (5.41 MB)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PHVBZDNP

You can hear the photographers shutters alot in Shine A Light, quite amusing watching them fight for prime location.

Tonight at the final ATP show on Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour, J Spaceman joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds during the encore for a storming rendition of "Stagger Lee". Spiritualized had been the special guests of Nick Cave as he curated the first Australian ATP.

Spiritualized set also included a music box version of Waltzing Matilda....

There are promos about for this. I picked one up for a quid from Vinyl Exchange in Manchester. Sure to be a fairly interesting collector's item at some point.

Forgot to say - thanks so much for uploading this - just listening to it tonight finally on proper speakers and sounds sweet indeed! Really digging this show, Jason's guitar well loud in the mix, the stuff being played on the 'Amazing Grace/You Lie You Cheat' intro is amazing - Doggen's getting really fired up and from the other side there is some crazy heavy wah stuff going on .... wow!

Love the music box 'Waltzing Matilda' as well.

...off tangent I know but I remember a few years back Pearl Jam released a whole stack of live CDs from all many dates from an international tour (I think).

I remember thinking, typically, "why bother" - but i'd love to hear something similar for this tour, straight of the desk, mistakes and all... :?:

Hmm the reviewer hated the Silver Apples. I love them, and love Simeon. I just ordered it (limited Silver Apples Vinyl for a mere $31? 1000 copies only!!!) YES YES YES I'M IN!

"SELECTIONS is a 12" vinyl LP produced from digital masters by ChickenCoop Recordings. It features recorded versions (not from live shows) of eleven of the early songs that Simeon performs in live concert plus a bonus track recorded in 1969 of an impromptu session in NY with Jimi Hendrix. A full explanation of the track is on the back of the album. It is a limited edition of 1000. This record was previously only available at concerts from the "merch" table. Magic Theatre Music has had many requests for it from people who missed the shows and wanted to add it to their collections. So we have decided to make it available here through PayPal."

I'M SO EXCITED. I JUST BOUGHT MYSELF A CHRISTMAS PRESENT!

Thanks for all the kind comments about my recording folks, glad you enjoyed it!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the whole show was videoed (three camera mix) by http://www.moshcam.com/ and should be on line sometime this or next week!

Silver apples is already up from the 16th http://www.moshcam.com/#?page=player&type=gig&id=482

That silver apples release sounds like a gem! shame its soo much to ship to the UK. Hendrix and the occilations would be a magical thing to hear!

Looking forward to checking that gig when its online next week too. This must be the most well documented tour they've ever done? Bootlegs of so many gigs and videos on you tube of the ones that arent. Great stuff!
