Supported by Kandodo who I'd never heard of til typing their name into youtube and discovering a whole load of magic! Listening to a track now called Swim Into The Sea and it's getting me tranced out and excited about seeing them later http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxh6ZBgtdrU

Toy are playing at Part Time Punks in a couple of sundays (ptp regulars Cold Showers supporting). Was not very into the first Toy album (I think they had a second recently? Did anybody listen to it?), just thought it was pretty boring and not very creative, lacked any power etc. It's the first time they will have played in LA and it's only 10 bucks I think, so I'm thinking of going to check out, have not really decided. Has anyone here seen them live? Any better live than recorded? If so maybe I'll go check it out, otherwise I will probably stay home.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Bloody hell. New year and all that. I have NO gigs lined up for myself at all. BUT I have to take my kids to shows that they have chosen. This means, God help me, that the gigs I have lined up so far for 2014 are Katy Perry and One Direction... Eek.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I can't really think of any gigs I have coming up, I'm kinda through with them. I mean, at 25 I shouldn't be bored of live music, but I really can't think of anything I'm interested in seeing.
I'm gonna go catch neutral milk hotel, because they're a band I wanted to get back to touring for a long time. I'm not that bothered anymore cause I saw Jeff Mangum play those songs great, and it was kinda a gap filled.
I feel like I'm just ticking boxes now going to shows. Although I loved ATP, I think that was it for me for a while. I have plans to go to Primavera which I've always had a laugh at, but I might just go to a nice lake somewhere and sleep for a week instead.

I am in a similar situation to you- didn't think much of the first album but still tempted to see them live as it's pretty cheap. would be interested to hear from anyone that's seen them.Hofstadter wrote:Toy are playing at Part Time Punks in a couple of sundays (ptp regulars Cold Showers supporting). lumerians are playing two sets for free on thursday night at a bar i've never been to. since i have to work that night i'm going to have to leave straight from work to get to the show to ensure that i end up going.

I am probably going to hike over from the People's Republic of Liverpool for Cosmosis (and pre-gig curry). I'm really looking forward to seeing The Warlocks.

Sounds good to me! The show starts early but I guess there is time to break away and eat should that be your will. Maybe when I'm DJing is your best bet... Hah... No kiss, honest.

Destruction Unit, White Fence, and Parquet Courts tonight. Should be pretty raucous I guess.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
The Warlocks are playing the Kazimier in Liverpool in March. This is far more convenient that Osmosis in MCR, so it looks like I'll catch them here. Lee Scratch Perry is also playing the Kazimier in March which I am most definitely going to.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
this year was supposed to a quieter year for gigs I told myself, lack off cash and what not, but so far, East India Youth at the end of the month, Temples next month then Mogwai & The Pastels the start of March... and complaints about ticket prices, Mogwai`s £27.50 certainly has my eyebrows raised

Got a ticket to see Mugstar in Brighton tonight but, following my leg operation, I'm only just off the crutches so really doubtful if I'm going to go out to it. Pretty gutted as never seen them before and I could do with a heavy does of psych rock. Never say never but it's looking unlikely

Booked up another WOODEN SHJIPS gig on the weekend. 3rd June at Camden Electric Ballroom.
This coming Sunday, 9th Feb, it's HOLY WAVE at the Railway Hotel in Southend On Sea, supported by our great local band WOBBLY LAMPS (do check them out whatever the occasion). Should be an entaining evening of garage rock n roll. http://holywave.bandcamp.com/music and http://www.piccadillyrecords.com/prod/W ... 89121.html
Hoping to get some more gigs in the bag soon.

Man I'd love to see Holy Wave but they aren't coming close to me!
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Pretty good aren't they Mark. They've only just popped up on my radar but really liking what I've heard so far. The venue for Sunday is a 10-15 walk from my flat and also my fav local pub so it's a win win situation. Soundwise it won't be killer but you can't win them all. My friend is interviewing them on the radio beforehand, possibly broadcasting the show too www.shipfullofbombs.co.uk (or com), which is the one I guest on every so often.runcible wrote:Man I'd love to see Holy Wave but they aren't coming close to me!

I'm going to see what they (possibly) have for sale on Sunday night. Hopefully Evil Hits will be there. They have a new album called Relax coming out but doesn't sound quite as good from what I've heard so far. If they have some treats on the table do you want me to pick you up something? Some bands who play there bring merchandise but not all.

Holy Wave are playing in Brighton on Thursday night...are they worth seeing then? Have given some of their tracks a quick listen and I'm detecting a bit of a BJM vibe going on. They only seem to be playing London, Liverpool and Brighton in the UK.

That was enough to get me interested. More Elevators going on here. Not all the album - which I've heard once but which is on its way - is like that but it sounded good. If they played in Leeds I'd go.

My plan to attend three Primal Scream gigs - Philly, NY and Brooklyn - is scrapped, but I'm left with a plane ticket to NY and a hostel booking for 7 days. I think I'll catch Mogwai's gig instead.. It's still kind of frustrating and it feels like every bands I like are touring in the wrong week or in the wrong city or in the wrong continent

Mogwai tonight in the rather splendid Usher Hall , Edinburgh, looking forward to this now as the new album appreciation has kicked in after initially not being to sure off it, support coming from The Pastels which is a blast from my younger past, always like them back then, not seen then in 17yrs , this will be weird,

Jaki Liebezeit in 2 weeks, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in Whelans (May) and BJM (July). Still undecided on War On Drugs in May.

here's how my diary is panning out..
Apr
Loop- Birmingham
The Ex- Leamington
May
The Twilight Sad- Manchester
Bo Ningen- Birmingham
Echo & The Bunnymen/Black Submarine- Oxford
Chameleons Vox- Leamington
Dean Wareham- Leamington
Jimi Goodwin- Birmingham or Oxford, still deciding!
Melt Banana- Birmingham
Jun
Wooden Shjips/The Cult of Dom Keller- Birmingham
Jul
Brian Jonestown Massacre- Birmingham
Tame Impala- Birmingham
I do sometimes moan about the lack of gigs in the Midlands, but looking at that lot I can't complain really..
I was interested in the Supersonic festival as the mighty Swans are headlining it, however I waited to see who else was gonna be added and it sold out really quickly. only 400 weekend tickets apparently. that's barely a festival!

I am just on my way out the door to meet Dave (Aquarian-Time) now for a few pre-gig beers. The Warlocks are playing The Kazimier in Liverpool with Mugstar supporting. I've seen Mugstar too regularly recently as they seem to be the second act on the bill at most of the gigs I go to these days, but I'm really looking forward to The Warlocks.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Yeah, it was really good actually. Bernard's vocals can sometimes be a bit weak/irritating but, when the band really went for it towards the latter parts of most song, they sounded great. Some of it was certainly more towards the poppier end of the psych spectrum but it was a thoroughly enjoyable night (though I was a bit twatted to be honest so my opinions may be a bit skewed ). Picked up the Red and Green EPs after the show....have only spun them once so far and they sound good, thoug some of the rawness of the live performance is obviously lost.

I am a big admirer of Bernard's first solo album People Move On. the solo album by the guitarist from a Britpop band might fill you with dread, but it's great trust me! the next one (Friends & Lovers) was utter pants though.
I watched a bit of Trans at Liverpool Psych Fest last year (their first ever gig perhaps?), but unfortunately wasn't in much of a state to really take it in (through exhaustion rather than booze I think). I do remember it being poppier than I expected. the whole dual guitar thing is definitely something I am a fan of, and I like the influences they are touting..

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Tend to read this section very rarely, as I'm bound to end up really jealous. I'm afraid it's one gig a year now maximum - having a 2½ year old, family not really close by to do baby sitting and also finding something both my wife and I want to go to all combine to make it not too easy. A midweek gig followed by a motorway journey of around an hour to work the following morning also don't make it too easy!
A bunch of you seem to have some really good stuff forthcoming esp you angelsighs - I used to live in Leamington and when I was there The Assembly wasn't used. However, went back a couple of times as my wife has friends there. We went to see Spz just before SHSL, and I Was really impressed by the venue and the staff there. I really miss the town too - it was great living there!

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
yeah well it's kind of a sleepy and boring town really, that's why it's so amazing to have a great gig venue here! I was sceptical what kind of acts the Assembly would attract at first, and although there are the usual tribute bands etc there has also been some incredible choices right on my doorstep. I was at that Spz show too (and the one in 2008).
it's a really nice venue- art deco interior and the sound has usually been very good.
