Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I got Tame Impala on Saturday, The Black Angels on Tuesday and then Low in a couple of weeks doing their Christmas tour.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
After 2 amazing gigs last week and the near-miss of Bardo Pond on Wednesday I now have... ...nothing on the horizon.
Feels pretty flat.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
recently I've Steve Mason (ex Beta Band, really good) and Leftfield (took a couple of songs to get into it, and then it was cracking. Tho it was a bit odd seeing kids on pills who weren't even born the last time i took one )
next one coming up is Manuel Gottsching in Glasgow in a couple of weeks. Apparently it's his first gig in the UK for 10 years

Suede on Friday. Was a really cool gig. I'm glad I went there. I even knew about two thirds of the songs and I don't really know them that well.
W: What are we supposed to do with that?
M: Eat it.

Hope it wasn't because of the weather... hoping the Godspeed show in Manchester (tonight) and Glasgow (tomorrow) go ahead... weather very grim up here...Ads wrote:The Wooden Shjips/Moon Duo/Howlin' Rain gig in Brighton was cancelled last night. Anyone know anything more?
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
The past month i've been to Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Gruff Rhys, LCD Soundsystem, Atari Teenage Riot, The Wedding Present, and Underworld. This weekend i've got Godspeed and Leftfield and that'll be me done 'til February.

yeah, I'd already seen that message on FB too, Mark. Just wondered what the reasons were as were completely clear of snow down here. Wasn't sure if they'd got stranded somewhere the night before? Also wanted to know if they were going to reschedule the gig?

Bugger, I was well looking forward to seeing all three of them together. Also, unless my mate can sort me out some freebies for the London Godspeed gig next week, I think it was probably going to be my last gig of the year.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Its been pretty quiet on this thread for January so its quite reassuring that I'm not the only one that hasn't had much to go to recently. Went to a free gig in a new Brighton live venue last night which was excellent (both the venue and the band.....local boys, Brakes, made up of ex-members of British Sea Power and Electric Soft Parade). February is looking much better, however, with tickets already in the bag for Jonny (Norman Blake out of the Fannies and Euros Childs out of Gorkys), British Sea Power, The Black Angels and Mogwai. Now, thats more like it

I dunno, I'm willing to gamble, i guess it was a lot about the groove with them, but i'd be kicking myself if it was dope and i didn't go with foresight, purely to see Garcia belt out one inch man live and loud if nothing elseruncible wrote:With no Josh Homme? Finally a gig for 2011. Black Crowes at Shepherd's Bush Empire in July which sold out in a few hours I believe - lucky me!
Last gig I saw there was Spiritualized on the Pure Phase tour and I got run over by a bicycle afterwards.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
saw Band Of Horses last night, they were pretty good, did a superb cover of Neil Young's Powderfinger.
but the real suprise of the night was Mojave 3 who I had no idea were supporting until the day of the gig, infact I had no idea they were still a going concern. I'm a big Slowdive fan so it was a real nice surprise. they played immaculate country-rock with some (slightly) trippy guitar touches. real solid songwriting too. I was very impressed.

MOJAVE 3!?!?
Looks like they've started to play some shows again. It's about time!

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Glad they are bringing their tour to your shores. Also glad you will be seeing the acoustic/electric show. I believe I saw their Manchester gig is electric only. Prepare to be blown away with the boys. Three hours of incredible, extended jams similar to how Duane, Greg and Dickey used to do it. Rarely do bands give you that these days.runcible wrote:Finally a gig for 2011. Black Crowes at Shepherd's Bush Empire in July which sold out in a few hours I believe - lucky me!

it was a really good set.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Just picked up tickets to see the North Mississippi All-Stars on March 5th.
At the moment that is the only gig on my horizon. I'm sure something will pop up between now and then, though.

I missed the band of horses/mojave 3 show which was a shame. Wire on friday though, then Mogwai in Hoxton the week after.

Wife's birthday in July so got tickets for Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. at the Ally Pally, they are doing Soft Bulletin and Bug respectively on the same night.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Just got tickets to see Damo Suzuki down here on Friday night. Not sure what to expect as my knowledge of Can is limited (no-existent more like!) to say the least. I know Neil (They Transmit) of Eat Lights;Become Lights raves about him and has in fact played guitar with him on stage.
Then, at the end of the month, I now have 4 gigs in 4 nights.....British Sea Power in Brighton followed by Black Angels then Mogwai in London town and finishing with Gruff Rhys back down here. Thats not bad going is it.

april is going to be ridiculous- black angels, raveonettes, low, moon duo, black lips and vivian girls.
as if that weren't enough there are a million great records coming out that month too.

Finally...
Chemical Brothers at Wireless Festival, always a good day (if it doesn't rain)
Holy shit, just noticed the Aphex Twin has been added to the line up, excellent news!!
...and on a slightly more high brow tip, Tindersticks at the Royal Festival Hall performing music from their scores to the Clare Denis films.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Got Mogwai next week, obviously, looking forward to that, although my copy of the new album hasn't arrived yet. itching to get stuck into that.
also going to see Bright Eyes in July- i'm not a big fan but my mate wants to go
then there's a couple of maybes- still deliberating whether to catch Trail of Dead and also maybe Primal Scream doing Screamedelica. really loving the bootleg and the Bham dates not sold out yet i dont think.

Earth - April
Belle & Sebastian - June
and most embarrassingly
The Sisters Of Mercy - tomorrow (I'll get my coat).

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Nothing embarrassing about that IMHO. I saw them play regularly in the 1983-1985 period, although I've not seen them since. I used to love the covers they did; Abba, Stones, Dolly Parton, Suicide, Stooges, Hot chocolate etc etc. Always found them very entertaining, although the quality of output went off after the big split....rameses wrote:Earth - April

EDIT: I have just seen the setlist and it looks like the only cover played was a Red Lorry Yellow Lorry tune (???). Add to this that the SOM tunes played were (in the main) post split numbers, so this had the potential to be a train wreck. Was it any good?
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
surely B&S are more embarrassing
First gig of the year was
Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500 + RIngo Deathstarr
to be followed by
Wolf People Feb 22
Janelle Monae Feb 26
Josh Pearson Mar 25
...Trail Of Dead + Rival Schools + Asobi Seksu Apr 17
and possibly Primal Scream and Vic Godard in between
Would have liked to see Crocodiles last week, but they were only supporting White Lies, and a lot going on this month anyway!

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Well, my 4 gigs in 4 nights are now over and I'm just about done in. Mogwai have just about pipped Black Angels to the top spot but all 4 gigs (BSP, Black Angels, Mogwai and Gruff Rhys) were superb. I've just realised I now have nothing on the horizon gig wise (apart from Glastonbury and, fingers crossed, hopefully Primevera). I think Carlton Melton and the Crystal Stilts are playing in Brighton soon which I want to go to and I'm also going to try to blag tickets for the Primal Scream Screamadelica gig at the Brixton Academy. Its certainly been a pretty good start to the year though gig-wise.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
North Mississippi All-Stars...tonight! I hear good reports about this latest tour of theirs and apparently they are playing two sets (no support). Gotta love the guitar playing of Luther Dickinson!
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
North Mississippi All-Stars absolutely killed it last night. 3+ hour show...Set one featured gentle blues with just Luther on stage. Really great stuff. After a short break of 15-20 minutes the entire band came on for Set two. Man, they were getting down, getting nasty and jamming some seriously funky, kick ass Southern fried, boogie blues rock. Like the Black Crowes gig late last year everybody was dancing and having such a good time last night. Shit, they even had a washboard solo that was being put through a phaser! Just so cool. Those of you on the west coast should check them out...they play several more dates in Cali before heading to Austin for SXSW festival and then back down south to wrap the tour up. In April, the boogie trio will team up with Robert Plant and tour the states again as his support band before heading over for shows in Spain..
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I'm heading down in a few to meet up with a buddy of mine to see these guys (old hippie alert):
http://www.darkstarorchestra.net/NEWSIT ... p?sec=band
I'm always somewhat cagey about tribute bands but they seem to play Portland every year and I have always heard good things about them. This band apparently choose a random Dead set (show) and replicate it. I have a lot of live Dead shows but I also listen to a lot of other things. My buddy tho will no doubt be able to pinpoint which show tonight's set comes from. He's hardcore Grateful Dead all the way.
Not a show for everybody...but we will enjoy it.
EDIT: Wow...that was surprisingly very, very good. Easily close to 3,000 people there. Set one was great but set two was fucking phenomenal. They were totally on fire. No breaks...all songs from 'St. Stephen' just seamlessly morphed into one. Band came on at 8:15 and finished just after midnight. Sweet! Oh, and my mate's guess of what show they were playing was within a month. He said halfway through the show he thought it was a Dead show from 1976...a few songs later he narrowed it down to Summer 1976. At the end of the gig the band announced that they had played the entire set from June 18, 1976 Capital Theatre; Passaic, New Jersey.
Set One:
Music Never Stopped
Sugaree
Mama Tried
Crazy Fingers
Big River
Brown Eyed Women
Looks Like Rain
Row Jimmy
Cassidy
Mission in the Rain
Promised Land
Set 2:
Samson and Delilah
Tennessee Jed
St. Stephen
Not Fade Away

As of yet, Spiritualized are not coming around my city and I can't afford to fly to the UK to see them. But, the Eels are returning on August 10th and I just picked up two tickets to see them. Nice, small, cozy venue too.
I'm happy.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I know if I'm going to a Monday gig I need to have my ticket in my hands in advance - always end up going to bed too late on Sunday and being knackered on Mondays so if I don't have the ticket already then chances are I'll be too lazy to go.sunray wrote:Laziness or work/family commitments? Monday's aren't ideal but i wouldn't miss a gig because of the day it fell on.rameses wrote:Moon Duo and Wooden Shjips - both in Leeds - Great
Gigs on a Monday night - no chance.
Saw Trail of Dead + Rival Schools on Sun. Got to the Garage too late for Asobi Seksu unfortunately. TOD were really great - I love the new album, and they played some of their best old tunes too. Excellent stuff
No Monday gigs in the near future thankfully. No tickets in my hands yet, but will definitely go and see:
- Moon Duo 14/05
- Low 17/05
- Stag & Dagger festival 21-22/05
and I also need to pick up my ticket for the Queens Hall gig in October.
GYBE in July at the Barrowland too most probably.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I know what you mean about the Monday night gig thing. If I've had a skinfull over the weekend and feel fucking knackered come the Monday, then I sometimes turn down gigs if someone is offering tickets. I pretty much always go though if I've already bought the ticket.
I'm off to see Carlton Melton tomorrow night. Its a double header with Liturgy who I know nothing about other than they are a "Black metal" band?! Should really check them out on MySpace or something to prepare myself.

Tame Impala & Yuck tonight....
I don't own their album and the videos on youtube haven't completely sold me. But, I will go see what all the buzz is about.

Let us know what you think. I watched a couple of Yuck videos and thought there were terrible, but Tame Impala are cool, even if they're a bit of a Dungen rip-off.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Didn't go in the end. Gig was $20 and yesterday I was offered two tickets to tonight's (April 21) Portland v Dallas NBA playoff game. The basketball tickets only cost me $50 for the pair (great seats too!) but by the time I pay for parking, drinks etc. it quickly adds up. Also, I don't know Tame Impala well and none of my mates showed interest so I chose to spend my cash on tonight's game.TheWarmth wrote:Let us know what you think. Regarding Tame Impala v Dungen influence...it also seems to me that a lot of newer psych bands like TI are greatly influenced in Flaming Lips later work ('SB' onwards). As a Lips fan from the beginning they lost me when 'Soft Bulletin' came out.
