Guitar Anorak Question

Hi, I'm new, go easy on me.

I was fortunate to be at the sage on Saturday night, absolutely fantastic.I have a question regarding the guitar played by one of the musicians, and I'll apologise now for not being familiar with their names.

Anyway, looking toward the stage you had J to the far right. On the far left their was the guitarist playing a light blue strat, I think (the same guy played the harmonica parts).

The other guitarist, the wiry haired one with glasses, played an unusual looking guitar, which i think had 4 pick-ups. At first I thought it was a fender jaguar, but I'm not so sure.

Anyone know what the guitar was (and the guitarist's name)?

Hi and welcome.

The light blue guitar, played by Doggen, was a Fender Jazzmaster and John Coxon plays a Gibson Thunderbird.

Don't know if these are re-issues or 60's originals, but given the condition of the guitars probably the later.

I don't know why, but when Doggen plays as Dogntank he usually change many guitars, but when he plays with Spiritualized he only uses the Jazzmaster. Perhaps Jason told him to use only Jazzmaster? Or the sound is suitable for Spiritualized?

I don't know...

That's what I was wondering - isn't the Thunderbird the bass version of the Firebird?

Mmm, I think there's a six and a four string version of both the Thunderbird and Firebird but I could be getting them mixed up.

The Thunderbird is the bass version of the Firebird.

On the other hand, Will Carruthers played a Thunderbird.

John plays a Gibson Non-Reverse Firebird, Lovely guitars. Nearly bought one myself but opted for this instead, same model Sonic used 88-89 era, Vox Phantom 12 string:

Funnily enough I was just about to start a thread, asking folks on here whether they collect vintage guitars? I also own a Vox Lynx 1965, a pic here from a live shot. I love how Spacemen used all the Vox gear, think it caused a huge revival for them, especially via Brian Jonestown Massacre using the gear:

Doggen's Iceberg blue Fender Jazzmaster was originally owned by Julian Cope! And it's a '60s original......

Noddy's right, it's a non-reverse Firebird. The Thunderbirds are essentially the bass version of this guitar.

that's a fine looking axe you have there Mr Warmth. Firebirds are gorgeous looking guitars.

Didn't Doggen used to play his black Les Paul (apparantly his favourite guitar) more in the LICD days? only recently (perhaps when he became the main lead guitarist) has he taken up the Jazzmaster exclusively. could be something to do with the need for whammy bar action- don't Jazzmasters have a good wide sweep for that, and also they don't go out of tune as much either?..

Jason meanwhile appears to have stuck with Fender Thinlines for forever.

the first time I saw the Spacemen play Walking With Jesus I seem to remember Jason used Pete's Jaguar for that song only, other than that I can't recall him using anything else on stage but Telecasters of different descriptions, apart from the acoustic of course

Re. Jasons guitars, I was far too young to experience them live in Pure Phase era, but I have seen pics of a Non-Reverse firebird, and its listed on album credits, but not sure if it was used live by Jason, I know there are promos from that era with Kate holding it.
Jason used to use a Rickenbacker in the studio with the Spacemen, would love to see him use one live.

Angelsighs: Yes, Jazzmasters do have a very nice wide sweep on the vibrato arm. The Maestro vibratos on those Firebirds (they also appear on a lot of SG's) sure look cool, but they are virtually useless with absolutely minimal sweep.

Geeky as hell, but I'm a guitar anorak too. I love it!

The rarest guitar I have is a Eko acoustic from the 60's I think. Not actually that rare, and I'm sure dirt cheap on ebay. Very cool guitar though-fretboard is a dream and it looks unique. I believe BJM and LGM-era Spz used ekos. I was close to buying an eko electric recently. Looked ancient, odd and a bit kicked in.

I use a Fender Jaguar, but does anyone else feel they're really soft and lack balls when distorted? I'm aware the guitar was more meant for a 50's or 'surf' sound. I'm guessing bands who use them upgrade the pickups. After watching the Nirvana Reading 92 DVD, I noticed Kurt Cobain had double coils in his. I've got a mid-range Tele and it is capable of a much heavier sound. Looks the business though.

I've noticed, rather spoddily (is that a word?), that on Spz records they often use Epiphone Casinos. I've got a Epi Dot, which is a great guitar for the price. I've always toyed with upgrading to a Casino. Love the twang and thickness of them on Revolver.

How much did you guys pay for those Vox guitars? I always fancied one of those too. If I recall they were absurdly expensive.

Both Vox guitars are worth close to Â£1,000, but a combination of selling lots of unused stuff and getting one of them for 2/3 of the value helped. I bought the Vox Lynx over 2 years ago on E bay, nightmare to play but sounds excellent.
That Non-reverse Firebird is a beauty.
This is a good thread for us guitar geeks! I also use a blue Rickenbacker 330 6 string for most stuff live, not particulary rare but Rickenbackers never let you down.

It could very well be the same, if memory serves me well there's a picture on the inner sleeve of Saint Julian of him playing it.

Neil, I meant to comment on your pedalboard and rig in general. Really impressive. Mine is less teched-out and I stick with mostly boutique analog pedals. I was listened to the ELBL 7-inches last night and you've got some great fuzz tones on there. Are you familiar with D*A*M from Yorkshire?

Cheers man. Yeah I had to get all hi-tech with the new gear to be able to do our stuff live as there's so much midi stuff going on.
D*A*M - Yeah great pedals, I used a Drag'n'fly and a 66' jag with hotrails in it on the "They Transmit" single for the heavy fuzz sound.

although i have no pics available I play a firebird, which I cannot possibly recommend more to anyone wanting to find a combination of dirty heavy grooves as well as some bleeding cut through when required - if you play through the right amp.

I'm not a massive guitar gar head, my baord only has about 8 -9 pedals at one time (all are mainly ehx / dunlop plus dd6 & bf7) - but i've played teles in the past and i'm just not convince of their ballsinesse really.

anyhow coxon's firebird sounded great as did dogne's jazz. if you want to get anything like the tonal / pitch shift with a trem then jazz is recommended.,

I put Fralin P90's in place of the stock mini-humbuckers and had the Bigsby installed. It's not vintage so I didn't feel bad about it.

Yeah I've had this Strat for ages. I sold it to Roger from The Early Years awhile back then got it back from him when my band started going further down the Krautrock/Neu road.
No trem for me I've got it as a fixed tail for more sustain. Actually I took it into the shop yesterday to get it set up by Andy at Angel music and while I was in there Storm Thurgeson came in, I was speechless lol. Shoulda said something I suppose..."Design our album cover" lol

I must be the only person who finds the majority of Thorgerson's later output incredibly over-the-top, kitschy and somewhat embarrassing. His 60's70's stuff is wonderful hands down one of the finest.

has anyone here seen those new Danelectro Dead On 67 Hornet reissues
now i know danelectros tend to not be great, but at $250-$350, how can you beat it, its a guitar you could destroy and not shed a tear about.
plus ive always wanted one of those silvertone hornets, so i just may get one of those

right now i have an Eastwood Mosrite copy with a burns trem on it, another cheap guitar that plays really really well, and a Univox hi-flyer which i dont have much nice to say about, except i wanted it at the time so i guess i liked it at some point haha..

i also have a tele 72 thinline reissue in honey blonde(only 250 made with that color) but im trying to sell it as i dont really play out much anymore and when i do i just play improv noise stuff here in baltimore, and the telle really aint cutting it for me

i sold my original RE-201 space echo, and i've regretted it since the minute it sold

ugh! you guys had to start this thread! i'm left-handed so i have a bizarre collection of knock-offs. well that's not exactly true, i do have a really nice gibson acoustic with the purdy abalone inlay, but honestly i'd rather play my old piece of crap epiphone that's been round ages and even shot with a gun (alright it was a bb gun rifle). it's great though, it's beat up but stays in tune and has a straight neck and a dead sound.

i have nylon string, a semi-hollowbody, a solid (sorta like a mustang) and two acoustics.

p/s- i love that photo paul, total porno, mine would look more like girls gone wild

Keeping with the 'guitar on a bed' theme that appears to be prevalent in this thread.
Every year I think about getting rid of this thing. Had it for 22 now hence the reluctance. Great direct through a desk but never enough grunt live through an amp, too well behaved.

The love rival is in the loft, Fender Strat XII (12 string), dodgy old goth history surfaces.

From left to right:
- '64 Jazzmaster (nothing else sounds like this)
- '75 Telecaster (had this since my early 80s punk days and is still my primary recording guitar)
- 2002 Stratocaster XII
- '96 Strat (modded with '69 pickups, new block, and in/out phase wiring. this is main gigging guitar)
- '67 Vox Cheetah (all the internal electronics work!)

no where near as cool as some of the guitars posted on here, but heres my two young lads guitars (the end two) and mine. My arm is in a cast at the minute so i cant play .....gutted
