Totally knackered today because (i) I had far, far too much red wine last night and (ii) I stayed up until stupid o'clock in the morning to watch the Everton-Blackpool game. What a game, I hope Blackpool stay up as they play decent football and are never less than entertaining. I could list plenty of other sides in from mid-table down who play really ugly football and are deadly dull. A couple of years ago, Bolton (under Megson) would have topped that list by Coyle seems to have overcome the last remnants of Megson (Any Wednesday fans here happy about his appointment???).

My wife and I dropped our kid off at my parents house on Friday and have had the whole weekend to ourselves. The last movie we saw was 500 Days of Summer (NOT my choice) about 1.5 years ago. We made up for it by seeing Black Swan on Friday night. Wow, fucking stellar! Highly recommended.

Breaking Bad: Season 1 & 2

Never heard of this series before but it was on the plane coming back from England and I watched three episodes in a row. Totally hooked. Had to investigate further so put both seasons in our Netflix queue. Got my wife hooked on it now. Gritty, powerful stuff. Best tv I have seen in a long time (given the subject matter though I'm not sure when or where it is aired).

Watched the Everton Bolton "game" last night - don't know why I bothered, two hours of proper sleep I'll never catch up on. OK, so Bolton are much easier to watch now that Megson/Fat Sam aren't there, but that game was dire. On in the middle of the fucking night down here, so I was totally wrecked by the time it started, and then.......a game so dull, so devoid of anything worthwhile, the absolute bottom of the barrel from Everton. You watch the first half and think, at least the second half will be better (WRONG). A match guaranteed to put you to sleep whatever the time, but at 3:45am, after a bottle and a half of Pinot Noir? So how was it today? fucking red wine hangover, sore neck from sleeping on the sofa, woken up by one year old daughter belting me over the head with the remote control for the Cable TV. At least the Heads/Big Naturals cd arrived today, just the thing to blow the cobwebs away......

Selected loops from the reissue and restored "METROPOLIS" with Kraftewerk's "Das Menschmachine" as the sountrack;
to be followed by a restored video of D.W. Griffiths "The Birth of a Nation" with looped tracks from Ron Geesin, "BBC Sound Effects Library" and Dvorak as the soundtrack. Smaller screens have differing NASA videos, and some have random live feeds from NASA and the woodlands (thermal) outside my home.

season 4 starts next month

i like this show but i'm not entirely convinced by it's merits - i think it coulda done a lot more than it has. it seemed quite formulaic & rigid, like most episodes see walter & his accomplice having to escape wild scenarios, a little like a the a-team meets the 'burbs.
but it is still very entertaining & streets ahead of other action shows at the minute (Sons of Anarchy being the lamest & most wasteful)

what i'm watching today is:
Treme
well i was watching the season finale until my young niece usurped my television

& i've been/will be watching:
Louie
Game of Thrones
Futurama

i also revisted my Peckinpah collection & a few Westerns on some down time last week..
i'd usually drift off to sleep to Prof Brian Cox's Wonders of... series or the commentary tracks for the Wild Bunch/Pat Garrett or Alien/s

i do watch too much tv.

I don't watch much tv at all but my wife and I do tend to watch The Apprentice together. I like the premise of the show a lot. I've seen the Alan Sugar/British version of the show too. I like his working class directness. Once you get past Donald Trump's hair and his smugness I actually think he too is a good choice of "boss" for the US series.

That said, I do think these type of shows get quite formulaic after awhile. They need something to really shake them up as it all tends to be the same even down to the occasional added drama between personalities. I thought the best Celebrity version of the show one was the recent one when the Lil Jon hip hop dude came in third place. He was totally chill, creative, articulate and completely shattered any stereotypes one may have made based on his image. The country singer who won it was also a clever dude. Meat Loaf in that series, however, came across as an emotional basket case with a very short fuse!

True Blood is back on and while it's not nearly as good as Six Feet Under, I'm still pretty into it. Some of the acting is awful, but who cares? It's like a b-movie with a big budget.

I'm going to finally start watching Breaking Bad on Netflix, after hearing so many good things about it.

I have 6 DVDs of assorted original politically incorrect Bugs Bunny and the wacky wabbits friends playing on different screens in different rooms. Our friends children are running themselves ragged and will no doubt be both visually and laughingly satisfied (and ready for sleepy time in about 30 more minutes, I estimate).

I underestimated the lil rascals stamina - it took an HOUR til "sleepy time"; by then, the grownups were enjoying
the cartoons; When I came back from getting a beverage, I almost spat my drink when beginning to laugh upon hearing "did Porky Pig just say -son of a bitch-? (Cartoon from the middle of WWII). :D

I bought that 'Redux' version of the film as AN is one of my all-time favourite movies, but I hated it. The extra stuff was pointless and intruded into the film I felt. Is this box better than this? I am assuming you are a long time fan of course...

I love Redux.

I have been watching this film on and off for about 12/13 years so probably a late comer really, I was excited to find out there was another 45 minutes or so of footage.

It probably does push the film into extreme self indulgence but I think it also gives the film more light and shade. The part with the Bunny Girls is pretty terrifying but the part where they nick Kilgore’s surfboard does bring a little humour and relieves the tension and sheer fucking insanity. The extended scenes of Kurtz’s compound probably don’t really enhance the story much but I am glad they are there. I would probably agree that the French plantation scene was kind of pointless but seeing Clean’s funeral I think was essential.

The Hearts of Darkness documentary is quite interesting. I think most people know that the film was way over budget and took years longer than it should have, I guess everyone also knows that Martin Sheen had a major hear attack whilst filming. What I didn't know was that some of the actors were stoned, drunk and tripping during filming, can't say I was too suprised.

This box set comes with a load of extras which I have been watching during the day and will probably never watch again, there is a scene which never made either version called Monkey Sampan and I have to say it scared the shit out of me. Maybe too extreme for either version.

Both films look beautiful on Blu Ray though. 8)

Woah, sounds mad? I love this movie, but I confess to never having seen the 'Redux' version. The above scenes sound interesting though. I tend to play it every couple of years and get really into it. True fact - Apocalypse Now was one of the few VHS tapes I ever owned - I used to only see films on the TV or occasionally the pictures.

"I mean I'm... no, I can't... I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's... he's a great man! I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas..."

I've been enjoying watching Camelot on 4id. Entertaining, loosely based on Arthurian legends with plenty of gratuitous sex, violence and sweary words in the mix.
Joseph Fiennes makes an amazing if twisted Merlin, and Eva Green is just something else.
King Arthur himself is rubbish, he's like a bit player in the story really, sorta disappointed as I've just read there are no further series' planned. I enjoy total fluff like this sometimes....

apoc now was shown at selected cinemas recently. i went to london to see it at one of the leicester sq cinemas. it was in a little room, the screen was bigger than the room- with only 4 rows of chairs back, and if you lent back you couldn't see the bottom of the screen. also the sound surround was awesome- you hear a chooper on the left-then right-then left- then a chopper fills the screen infront of you.

best...cinematic...experience...ever!

even better than star wars ep 3, donnie darko and lord of the rings-return of the king. hell yuh!

I watched all of this flying from Manchester to Melbourne with Emirates in April. Nice flight, but I was fucking frazzled by the time I'ld finished watching The Pacific. The scene where they toss pebbles into the dead Japanese soldiers head still gives me the odd shudder. Must watch this on a proper TV sometime....I did the Mel-MCR-Mel round trip in under a week (4 1/2 days in the UK) so a combination of Jetlag / hangover / exhaustion / excitement / booze means that some of the finer details passed me by

Just watched The Windmill Movie. It's a (auto)biographical film about the Harvard professor/filmmaker Dick Richards. I use "(auto)biographical" because Richards shot the footage, spoke most of the narrative, and wrote the rest over 30 years, but it was all eventually compiled after his death. The result is an extremely beautiful film that speaks volumes about the human experience. Sounds like a cliche, but it is extremely moving and deep. Despite his privileged upbringing in the Hamptons, he was a very tortured soul, full of regret, self-hatred, and embarrassment. Those don't sound like great things, but you have to realize it's someone creating a portrait of their life at the end of their life. And Richards doesn't take the romanticized route. He goes full into the details, scars (literally), emotions, and experiences of what his life was (or what his experience of it was). It is the ultimate thing an artist can do - use oneself as the art. This is not as a "my stories are inspired by me" kind of thing. He isn't reflecting his life in his art. Rather, his actions are, in the sequence of the film, the essence of the film. He is the film. Not strangely, the film becomes him. He is conscious of his life playing an integral role in his art. He becomes almost a martyr for his art. His death conquers the project that conquered most of his life. He is a person who spent his whole life comparing himself to other, more successful people in his field and childhood. However, throughout the movie and as his life unfolds before his self analysis, moments of extreme beauty and love bubble to the surface. It serves as a flag for everyone else who still exists about what we need to get out of this thing called life.

Highly recommended and it's streamable on Netflix.
