I have to disagree with the bit in this article where they say that FFF beers aren't noticeably better than those of other breweries like Stone. To me, their beers tower over the majority of the competition. I really love the Stone, Dogfishhead, Dark Horse and Bells beers, but to me FFF is without question a superior brewery.

Remember, its written by someone in DC. Not exactly a hotbed of craft beers.

Easy for you to say. You can go to your fave liquor store and buy it. I cant . It held up just fine.TheWarmth wrote:Yeah, you don't want to hold onto the Alpha Kings for too long. Those should be enjoyed fresh. It was either January or February when we went to FFF.
A new shop opened around the corner from me. I went in there today because I am out of Two Hearted and asked if there was a State law against selling beers we cant get in Michigan. The owner said yes but there is no law against a sort of trading post idea. I told him give me two days off and I will go just about anywhere. I was looking at the closest big city in Indiana for a Three Floyds run. So we'll see. A bit of gas money would be nice.

Alan, it very well might be worth it to come all the way to Munster in order to get Zombie Dust and Jinx Proof. I doubt you will be able to buy them anywhere else and they are without question excellent and worth the time and effort. Last time I was at the brewery they said the limit on those two was six cases (insane, considering it's scarce in Chicago). Let me know if you decide to do that.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
If I do this it may well be tomorrow. I have a few days off and they have that Bourbon Moloko Stout on tap. At least as of yesterday. I will check again today. Are you going to Cave Monday night at the Empty Bottle?
Maybe I could make a night out of it.

Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
This discussion prompted me to go thru my cellar.
I am selling all my Bell's Batch 9000, 10,000 and 25th Anniversary.
I'd rather use that cash to load up for the winter with FFF.
I am amazed at what I have in that cellar. A boatload of Dark Horse limited stuff. 3 bottles of KBS, Lots of the regular Founders Breakfast Stout. I should look down there more often.
I'll let you know as soon as I decide.

It was my wife's birthday yesterday and we went to a bar with a handful of friends. I was drinking Amnesia ESB...still my favorite brewery in Portland. Their Copacetic IPA is unbelievable. Alan and Paul, I wish I could send some to you but they don't bottle it. Guess that means you two will have to come visit me in "Beervana", Oregon!
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
I'd love to get out to Portland. Maybe it'll happen in 2012. Also, I think our little midwest territory might challenge yours for the beervana title I'm sipping a Bell's Two-Hearted right now.

I suppose that, when i drink, it's mainly to get buzzed rather than to savor the particular qualities of whatever i am consuming. I've really liked a lot of craft beers i've tried, but i've tended to find that with all of the extra ingredients there is a much smaller window between sobriety and feeling nauseated.
So, there have been a lot of things on this thread that i'd like to try, but on a regular basis i'm probably gonna be ok with corona, magic hat #9, or something else in that neighborhood.

Wow - I am the opposite, but then I work in the wine industry. I can't drink shit wine anymore - I'd rather leave it. You really don't care what it tastes like? Man I wish I could do that - it'd save me a packet.jadams501 wrote:I suppose that, when i drink, it's mainly to get buzzed rather than to savor the particular qualities of whatever i am consuming.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
Haha it's not that I don't care AT ALL what something tastes like -- I had more than enough experiences in college with boxed wines and diluting hard alcohol with tap water or Capri Sun -- but when something reaches the point of being "pretty good," where I enjoy drinking it, I don't make it my priority to have something REALLY good, because the buzz is my primary goal.
Not that I'm criticizing any of you alcohol aficionados... when it comes to music, I tend to want the very best even if I enjoy slumming in guilty pleasures from time to time. But with alcohol I am generally fine with the bottle of Skyy rather than Grey Goose, or the 11 dollar bottle of wine rather than the 30 dollar one, or a couple of Heinekens rather than something that will cost more or take more work to find.

I scored two cases of Three Floyds Zombie Dust at the brewpub last week. Alan, you really need to come back down. There were a large number of excellent beers I had never had on tap that are not being bottled. They are in the process of expanding their operations, too, which I think is a good thing. Not sure if it'll mean wider distribution, but we will see.

The bar owners has somehow managed to get exclusive beers to the UK. It's not like they will be made widely available over here. For example, Mikkeller brew a house beer for them. They have 37 draught beers available, 16 UK cask ales and the rest on keg are sourced worldwide. And over 200 bottled beers.

Founders Breakfast Stout is the best non barrel aged stout in Michigan. Its fantastic.
The craziness begins with Kentucky(Bourbon barrel aged) Breakfast Stout and multiply that by 10 for the Canadian(Maple Syrup barrel aged) Breakfast Stout.

I know that place. That blackboard!
I was just out thrifting. I stopped at several local liquor/beer shops to buy single $1 Mega Millions lottery tickets(jackpot over $300 Million).
Once again let me say how lucky I am to live in this state.
I found a 4 pack of Founders Breakfast Stout which was supposed to be gone by early January.
Just looking at the Michigan beers is nuts. I rarely buy anything else.
What sucks are those shops that overcharge for the limited stuff. $25 for a 4 pack of Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree is a joke.
There are 5 or 6 that stand out from all the rest. Bell's, Founders, Dark Horse, Jolly Pumpkin, Shorts and Right Brain which doesn't bottle unfortunately but they make great beer.
If you were still looking at coming over for Spiritualized shows Chicago, Detroit and exactly half way between is Bells with Dark Horse right on the way too. Actually so is Three Floyds. Founders is an hour out of the way.
That would make one great trip.

I have had quite a few double IPA's in my time and nothing approaches Hopslam in that it is brewed with honey and takes the edge off and gives it a sweet finish. Making it different than your average double or triple IPA.
If you live around here Hoplsam is $18 per six pack which is reasonable. Just bought one yesterday.

By the time you've purchased all the equipment, learned the craft and brewed a beer as good as Hopslam (if you ever get there), you will have exponentially more than $250 or whatever the cost is to get a case imported to the UK. A friend of mine is a very enthusiastic brewer. When he started I assisted him, but I did not enjoy the process and decided to let him go forward on his own. I'd much rather just go to my local beer shop.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
That's awesome that you can still get it. It's long gone in Chicago. Weird things are popping up in even weirder places. The liquor shop on my corner has a fully stocked cooler. They had at least 1 six pack left as of yesterday. I dont think that is the type of place that sells many $18 six packs.

You just know when shops like that price like that they are not to be patronized.
Same shop will sell bottles of KBS for $10 instead of $5 like everyone else does.

I figured, but a lot of people do go into home brewing thinking that they're going to save a ton of money. In the long run, some people do, but many wind up spending a lot of time and money only to wind up with average to mediocre home-brewed beer.BzaInSpace wrote:Er, I was actually just making a joke with reference to the absurdly high cost Shaun was quoted...TheWarmth wrote:By the time you've purchased all the equipment, learned the craft and brewed a beer as good as Hopslam (if you ever get there), you will have exponentially more than $250 or whatever the cost is to get a case imported to the UK...

Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
Stopped in Three Floyds today to get carry out. Those dudes are PRINTING MONEY. There was a line to get to the line to order carry out. No fucking kidding. I had to stand in a short line at the entrance for about 10 minutes before I was able to move through the brewpub to the next line where I waited about 15 minutes before I got to place my order. Crazy. Anyway, I was picking up some beer for a friend as well as myself and wound up with the following:
Rye'd Da Lightning x 2 bombers - rye pale ale - AMAZING. I love this stuff.
Arctic Panzer Wolf x 3 bombers - imperial pale ale - These were for a friend, but I wish I could have afforded to buy some for myself. Super refreshing considering the 9.5% alcohol content.
Live A Rich Life x 1 - belgian style imperial pale ale - Haven't tried this yet, but looking forward to it. Alan, did you crack yours? Kinda pricey at $15 a bomber.
Alpha King - full case - Classic FFF flagship beer. Can't go wrong. Interestingly, I can save myself $15 per case by purchasing through the brewpub. In Chicago, I pay between $12 and 13 per six pack of FFF beer. Cases are $35 at the brewpub.
The only bummer was the fact that Zombie Dust was sold out. The guy working the door told me that a group of five guys came in and bought the maximum (6 cases per person) and wiped them out. Annoying. I was also told that FFF does not distribute Zombie Dust, other than to select bars in kegs. This means that the liquor store on Chicago Ave. in Humbolt Park is selling ZD in six packs illegally. I wonder if it was them that came in and bought 30 fucking cases.

Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
I was in Cincinnati this weekend for a few Detroit Tigers vs Reds baseball games and found the following:
Green Flash- Palate Wrecker and Le Freak
Alltech's- Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Aged Ale
Sixpoint- Resin in these really cool Red Bull style cans from Brooklyn. None available in Michigan that I know of.
Among other things.
If only I won the Powerball Lottery!

Burnside Brewery - IPA
Amnesia, Burnside and Captured By Porches remain my three favorite Portland ales. Just so good.
I would love to get these three brews out to you guys. They need to be tasted and enjoyed beyond this city.

Palate Wrecker is great. I think most of the Green Flash beers are quite good.

Palate Wrecker is an apt name. I had to move to lager after that one.
