Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
All of the Stone beers that I've tried are good, so it certainly wouldn't be a bad choice to try their R.I.S. I will say that it didn't knock my socks off or anything, but it's hard to get psyched about any other brewery's R.I.S. after you've had Three Floyds' Dark Lord.
If you can get the Oaked Arrogant Bastard for a better price than the regular A.B., then by all means go for it!

Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
I'm drinking a Stone IPA right now. It's just a good, solid beer. It's really hoppy, so I'm sure it will keep well when shipped overseas.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
thanks for the advice, gonna try a few of these IPAs as i find them.
maybe one of my local taverns will have some?

I don't see it in that photo, but I do see some dogfish, which is a good sign.

I am enjoying this thread...my wife and I were at a bar last night and I had a couple pints of Firestone IPA, which is out of Arizona, I think. Pretty good pint too.
I know everybody is a patriot of their own state/beer scene so I have to promote Portland's beer scene, yet again. Here's a decent article on it but all you have to do is a google search on "Portland beer/brewery" and you will come up trumps. My personal favorite brewery in the city is Amnesia housed in an old metal shop. They do not bottle it so one has to drink it straight on the premises. When you guys come out to visit I will be sure to take you on a tour of the 30+ breweries in the city. Portland is not known as "Beervana" for nothing:

I've found some Hop Wallop at 8.5% by Victory Brewery cheap online, but the best before if 25th Feb. Do these strong double IPA's go off quickly or get better beyond their shelf life?Â
This is obviously the place to ask.

This isn't a bad Oregon brew. Personally, I think there is better beer being brewed in Oregon than Rogue but they are certainly not bad. If you can find their Younger's Special Bitter on tap it's one of my personal favorites from Rogue. Especially if served cask conditioned.
Deschutes Mirror Pond is an excellent Pale Ale from Bend, Oregon. Deschutes is one of our state's main microbreweries. Not sure how far east it travels but it is worth searching for. As are Bridgeport Ales (Portland), Full Sail Ales (Hood River, OR) and Ninkasi (Eugene, OR) to name a few.
Again though, the very small brew guys who only serve on site in their pub/brewery are sometimes the best discoveries and often the most creative.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
I always buy Deschutes when I am in Arizona(which is often). I will try anything I haven't seen before if it sounds interesting.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll grab a few as the same online place as the 90 minute beer that's been spoke about in this thread and one I'd like to try. I'm going to have about 30-40 different American craft beers soon which includes both of those Rogue beers.spzretent wrote:generally they are abit darker and definitely high abv which menas they should last.

I think I've found 4 beers online (UK based) from Founders Brewery. Pale Ale, Porter, Reds Rye and Double Trouble. Are any of these worthwhile buying?

I can tell you by experience Double Trouble lives up to its name! Definitely worth picking up. The porter is very highly rated(though I am not a porter fan). The regular IPA is nice as well.

Went for 3x Double Trouble on your recommendation, plus a Pale Ale and a Reds Rye. Also from another website 4x 90 minutes IPA, 4x Hop Wallop, a Snake Dog IPA and an Australian beer.spzretent wrote:I can tell you by experience Double Trouble lives up to its name! The DFH 90 Min seem to be gone everywhere around here. Ever since this thread started I have been looking for it in my beer travels. DFH is featured on a cabe television show here and apparently their sales have skyrocketed.
I had a few nice IPA's last night. Hand pull Mad Hatter from New Holland and Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA from California(an assumption based on the name). Both excellent.

Spzretent, that's bonkers. I'd try and save a bottle for you but that might prove too difficult if it's that good, but I will try. I have 4 bottles of rare Austrian beer too if you are interested in trying one. What's the average price per bottle for the 90 Minutes over there so I can get some idea of the markup they're putting on over here.spzretent wrote:The DFH 90 Min seem to be gone everywhere around here. Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
No idea. I have never bought a bottle. My sole experience with the DFH 90 min was last years Opening Day of baseball season mentioned earler in this thread. After 2 pints of it (for $1 each!) it pretty much made the rest of the day a blur.
60 min is usually around $10 per six pack. 90 min are sold by single bottle I think. It will be around again. No need to save one.
The problem in the US is the craft breweries cant keep up with local demand. That is why there is such poor distribution. There is a fantastic brewery from Indiana, Three Floyds, which pulled out of Michigan because of this.
Part of it is also some of the people who were into wine prior to the economy tanking have turned to craft beer. I know several wine people who are now either more into, or just as into, craft beer. You get more bang for your buck. And quite frankly it is much easier to tell what styles you like and how to articulate what it is you like about them. Plus you get all these limited releases which are getting harder and harder to obtain.

Beer aged in absinthe barrels? Coming soon from Avery: http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociety/2 ... a.php#more
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
Apparently a brewer, or the brewer, from Ballast Point is or was in Kent guest brewing for a brewery and the beer will be exclusive to the upcoming Wetherspoons beer festival. Will have to try and hunt that one down. Until now my experience of American craft/micro beers are a couple of Sierra Nirvana beers, the Heartland Brewery pubs in NY and also McSorleys(?) also in NY.spzretent wrote:Plus you get all these limited releases which are getting harder and harder to obtain.

Well then, you are in for a very pleasant surprise! Not to diss those beers but the beers you ordered are a completely different animal. I saw 4 packs of DFH 90 Min today for $11. Not sure how that compares to UK pricing.Shaun wrote: Apparently a brewer, or the brewer, from Ballast Point is or was in Kent guest brewing for a brewery and the beer will be exclusive to the upcoming Wetherspoons beer festival. I've ordered loads with another wish list ready. $11..!!! You can at least double that over here, then there's postage which varies. It might be that there's a minimum spend or set postage up to a certain amount of bottles pro rota to how many are ordered. I'm in with some friends who are currently going giddy on Belgium beers and that helps keep the postage lower.spzretent wrote:Not to diss those beers but the beers you ordered are a completely different animal. Shipping from the US to the UK is a major cost. We are in the process of starting a company export US craft beers to the UK. Its expensive but really worth it.

Stone is building a brewery in Europe0, I believe. http://blog.stonebrew.com/?p=1564
Shipping an IPA overseas may be costly, but it shouldn't have an effect on the taste. Remember, IPA stands for Indian Pale Ale. Hops were added to normal pale ales to keep them from spoiling on voyages from the UK to colonial India.

Wow! A brewery in Europe? That must put them near to size as Sam Adams in Boston, which as good as their beer is they probably do not qualify as a microbrewery anymore. Nothing against them, of course. I'm just wondering when a company becomes bigger than their "microbrewery" status.

Here is an interesting little article on Colorado beer distribution in the U.S.: http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociety/2 ... o_brew.php
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
Totally understandable leaving Michigan.
The way the economy is here most craft beer enthusiasts want to support Michigan breweries. A lot of out of state breweries have pulled out of Michigan.
As a result of this all the bigger craft breweries in Michigan have expanded. Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, New Holland. And they still cant keep up with local demand. I think its kind of a nice problem to have.

Binny's is having a big craft beer sale so I picked up two Stone Arrogant Bastards bombers, one Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous bomber (an incredible black IPA) and a sixer of Stone IPA. Good haul!
Alan, I've got three bombers of Half Acre Ambrosia (very limited and delicious). I can hold one for you, if you'd like. I still can't find Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree anywhere.

Top tip... Tesco are selling 330ml bottles of an American IPA at 9.2% on their finest range for £1:49 (special offer), but I think it's BrewDog Hardcore IPA, only relabelled, which sells for £2:59 on their website.

Paul. I have some extra Double Crooked Tree. We can definitely swap.
I am bringing some to the UK in July. Simply put, my favorite Michigan Beer!. I saw lots of the Michigan Craft Beer movers and shakers at Opening Day on friday. Even found Hopslam on tap. But 4 hours into an all day drinking fest it wasn't truly appreciated. Except that I could post it in this thread.

That's really odd that we have it in Chicago before you can find it in Michigan. I'm really hoping I can get more. The beer buyer at Binny's said that he didn't realize how much demand would be and he's hoping to get more in next week. Still no sign of Double Crooked Tree here, though.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
No more Double Crooked Tree here anymore either. I have some for you.
I have not been drinking much at all the past month. Last night I decided to test 3 different IPAs.
Bear Republic- Racer 5
Dark Horse Crooked Tree
Bell's Two Hearted and topped off by a brown ale by Dark Horse sold in a dual six pack w/the same recipe but brewed by Arbor Brewing. Three bottles by each brewery in each six pack.
All good but Dark Horse Crooked has become my "old reliable" in the IPA world.
Simply the best brewery in Michigan now.

I think it says a lot about the state of American microbrews that most of these breweries cant keep up with local demand and are therefore not widely available. What a great problem to have.
Most people outside of this region probably cant get Dark Horse. Same with Three Floyds(We cant even get it in Michigan and its one state away).
No idea what Oregon beers I cant get.
Who makes Pliny The Elder and why is that so sought after?

Russian River from Santa Rosa, California (just north of San Francisco) makes Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger. Elder is available pretty widely (well, at least in San Diego) and it's just a good strong IPA. 8% ABV.
Pliny the Younger is the rarer one that people travel to taste. It's made in small batches and once it's gone, you have to wait until next year to have it again. I've had it only once and it's pretty delicious. Very strong (11%, I think?), but you hardly taste it - which is the problem. The Younger has a real nice balance between citrus and hops, which is what makes it the perfect "Cali-Belgique" (new californian style to the belgian mold) and sets it apart from a lot of other similar beers.

Pliney The Younger sounds sort of like Hopslam minus the honey. Very citrus/hoppy. And strong!

Rogue: india red ale

Things are moving along. There is quite a bit of red tape and we're in a holding pattern right now until paperwork gets processed.

Mmmmmm....
Two great breweries. I will be curious as to what you think. I was in Toronto this weekend and we went to a gastro-pub called The Rebel House. I asked what microbrews they had. One was described as "super hoppy". I said that one will do. Maybe by Canadian standards it was "super hoppy". It was like a mild version of Bell's Two Hearted.
By the way I got to the bottom of this mysterious issue of no Dark Horse Plead The Fifth in Michigan yet. Its because you guys got no Double Crooked Tree. So I am still waiting patiently. I did find another 4 pack of Double Crooked Tree at a Whole Foods today. Score!

Hmmmm ... Plead the 5th still seems to be ultra scarce here. I checked another Binny's location and they said they didn't get any of the PT5th that they ordered. I hope DH sends more our way. I only have one bottle left.

Three Floyds is my favorite brewery. Hopefully, your friend can obtain some for you. Last night I was at a bar in Chicago called Local Option and had the Three Floyds Ham On Rye, which is a fantastic smoked beer. Unfortunately, they don't bottle it. Pretty much anything you can get from FFF will be excellent, though.
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
You have some good ones there. Founders Porter is very highly rated, Dirty Bastard and Double Trouble are monsters. Dark Horse is simply my favorite Michigan brewery period.Shaun wrote:The ones I have been able to source so far are...

Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
The guy who I phoned up today regarding some of those beers above told me they've been drinking Mikkeller Beer Geek Bacon and he said that was a fantastic smokey porter style beer that is actually brewed with bacon. Sounds weird but I think I'd try it. Also, the Mikkeller brewery seem to brew beer like it's about to go extinct. Their website is worth a look.TheWarmth wrote:  Last night I was at a bar in Chicago called Local Option and had the Three Floyds Ham On Rye, which is a fantastic smoked beer.
Thanks. I'm not a huge fan of Porters but I just had to buy a bottle of this one.Âspzretent wrote: You have some good ones there. Founders Porter is very highly rated, Dirty Bastard and Double Trouble are monsters.
I'll try and save a couple of these for the RAH pre gig drink.

The Mikkeller stuff is too expensive over here. Usually it's $6 or $7 for a 12oz bottle. However, the bartender highly recommended It's Alive, so I had one and really enjoyed it. Maybe you can get it cheaper over there?
Re: Bell's Hopslam in the UK- A 10% Michigan IPA
It's very exspensive over here too. The cheapest I've seen for a 12oz bottle is about £3.00 and that's for their cream ale, which I've bought a bottle of. Beyond that the prices are just really exspensive (you can triple, quadruple) and go even beyond that for Mikkeller beers. They're doing a series of 19 single hop beers all using different hops and apparently there will be only one outlet in the UK to carry all of them.TheWarmth wrote:The Mikkeller stuff is too expensive over here. Wa Hey!
It's Short's Anniversary Ale(previously 6th Anniversary Ale) release day. This shocked me.
Bought a case. This is the blood orange wheat wine clocking in at nearly 12% abv. With a peppercorn finish.
Stunning beer.
