An open apology...

Earlier today my brother tagged me in a very inappropriate image on Facebook. I'm under the impression that it might have been highlighted to others on my friends list as i think he posted it publically.

I'm extremely apologetic to anyone who witnessed this image. Its not something i would ever post myself nor is it something i wish to be associated with through Facebook. I understand many people i have befriended on Facebook, some from here, have children and it was nothing short of "bang out of order". The image was very quickly untagged and the post removed, but i have been compelled to deactivate my Facebook account as a result.

I hope anyone who was unfortunate to see the image knows me well enough to understand that this was not posted by myself nor would i have allowed such a thing.

Thats all i have to offer just now on it. Not sure i'll be back on Facebook soon either. Can't be bothered with so many things just now, think i need a little break

Best wishes,

J

I am very sorry to hear that the limits of your privacy were invaded and broken.

Increasingly, I have seen "Privacy" become just another word in the dictionary.

Surely no one on this site would make the supposition that you intended such a image described, to be "shared".

I do not "do" Facebook, or tweet, or really use much "social media"; in fact, the relative strangeness of not having met so many of my "Virtual" friends prompted me to send a short snippet of my voice, so that I would somehow feel less detached; and even that seemed strange, since I am, by nature, a very private person; I like to SEE with whom I am "conversing"; but I am increasingly more comfortable, within limits. Your limit was passed without your permission, and that was quite wrong.

For your sake, I do hope that this moment in time passes quickly for you, and you are no longered troubled with it; anyone of us could have SOMETHING unwantedly dragged up from the past and shown, but I am sorry you are saddened and wronged.

EXACTLY ! What can you do on Facebook, Twitter that you can convey, state or share with a simple email ?

I don't need to read your tweet about you having a bowl of cereal this morning or that your buying a new pair of trainers.

I have Facebook, but I don't use it. It is a good tool to find school mates, etc. that you have lost contact with - that's all.
It is for these hipsters that just like " to add friends " and is a competition to see who can add the most mates. Ha ha, I have 398 mates and you only have 25 - that's shite !

Hopefully, this is a good learning experience ...

If you don't like Facebook, then fine, don't use it. To state that it is useless, however, is ridiculous. Anyone who is in a band needs to have a Facebook page. It's absolutely essential if you want to market/promote effectively these days. On a personal level, the large majority of my family have Facebook accounts and it sure is easier for me to post photos of my kids there and let everyone view them at their leisure than it is to send them out in a massive email every time I have a new set I want to share. Naturally, privacy settings need to be set appropriately. Simple! Like I said, if you don't have a use for it, then fine, but the "Facebook is shite!" posts that I read so frequently are annoying. I don't have a use for Twitter, but I don't go around bashing it, either.

All this been said, it's a bummer what happened to Laz. I didn't see the image, so I'm not sure what it was. So far I haven't experienced anything that has prompted me to consider deleting my account. It is very useful for me at this stage in my life.

So you probably bought Facebook stock, good luck with that...

Let's see where Facebook will be in the next few years ala MySpace and Yahoo ...

I see these Social Media outlets as merely tools that are to be used as the owner of that tool wishes.
But, if a kid steals my hammer and breaks a window, who do I blame in the immediate timeline for this?

The hammer?
Or the kid who used it, who borrowed that hammer without my consent, and took the tool and used it and wronged the owner of the broken window, and wronged me by using something that he was not authorized to use.

The accessability of objects and their uses by little brothers for illegitimate purposes is a VERY OLD PROBLEM; it is the ease with HOW MANY "windows" can be broken that has changed with these new "tools". Since I have never even LOOKED at Facebook, I don't know what safeguards are available; but even a locked toolbox will not necessarily deter a little brother from swiping a hammer.

It seems foolish to be unkind about this matter, especially when Laz69 went through embarrassment in order to put things right again. It takes care and concern to WANT to put things right.

The tangential comments about stocks, and intimated losses seems out of place here; as if the entire point was missed.

So, you don't understand that it's nice for my parents to be able to view photos of my kids via Facebook? I'm pretty confident that if we were sitting at a bar having a beer while discussing this, you'd say, "I don't like Facebook, but I get how it works for you."

Also, was it Facebook's fault that Laz's buddy tagged him in an obscene or offensive photo? No. Maybe FB will cease to exist by the time 2013 rolls around. I don't care. I don't own stock in it. I use urinals, too, but I don't own stock in whatever companies make those.

Has anyone else read this thread and simply had their curiosity heightened in respect of what the "inappropriate image" was? Maybe my own voyeuristic instincts are just playing up...

moral of the story- don't have friends

do i use facebook- no. do i want to- no. do i care if people do- no.

the only 'media' outlet i dislike is twiter becuase it is reported as news. you have morons such as joey barton having an outlet and then it's reported as though his opinion matters!

keep the form of media but please please please stop reporting twitter as real news!

If it helps you sleep at night...

It was an porn image of an extremely graphic nature... it was not only unsuitable for somewhere like Facebook where i have many friends who are parents, but my eldest daughter is also one of my "friends" on there and that is what concerns me most. I don't think she saw it (she's on holiday just now) but it would have appeared visible to her if she had checked Facebook at the time... then there are all the other friends who have kids who use Facebook... by tagging me, it would have appeared on my timeline, and ultimately highlighted it to anyone in my friends list, very quickly making it visible to a lot of people. i think 99% of them would have found it extremely offensive too and i would hate to have heard that someone's kid had saw it while looking over mum or dads shoulder. I'm no prude by any means, but it was highly inappropriate of my brother to tag me on said image.

In some cases, Twitter absolutely _is_ news.

Much of it is twaddle, but when sh*t goes down, people who are there watching it can send out instant Tweets on what's happening.

You can say the same about TV or radio - yeah, much of it is BS... but not all. Best to try & absorb the good bits. :)
