Here in the States, a lot of people like ManU, they are quite popular. They'll be the odd person who follows Arsenal or Chelsea, that's about it. The Gallagher Brothers were the first that I heard that followed City when they were probably a 2nd or 3rd tier team.

Thats the equivalent to saying a lot of people in around the world like the NY Yankees. Because that is the only gear they see.
I suppose Man U items make great souvenirs when people visit England. That doesn't make them fans. I'm sure they dont follow football. I'm lucky to have become really good friends with several English football fans and I was steered away from Man U.
That explains why I am a Leeds fan I guess. I have been to Elland Road several times. Even went to an away match at Barnsley. Once Leeds were relegated, Man City became my Premiership team. Perhaps because I was in Manchester so much and my friends there are Man U fans and I enjoy that salmon swimming upstream mentality.

Spzretent - EXACTLY. In the last post I was going to mention the dreaded NY Yankees. NY being an int'l cosmopolitan city w/ gobs of celebrities that worship them, including KingJames (from Cleveland). If you live outside of Milwaukee or Wisconsin, how many Brewer fans would you likely meet ? I remember meeting someone from Leeds and he was a ManU fan

I live in the Bay Area and it doesn't seem to be much interest in this year's EuroCup, except for the Europeans that live here. They know the EuroCup is playing and that the TourdeFrance is coming soon.

Rust Belt is a bad example because tons of people from Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit and yes even Chicago have moved to the Southwest or South. Trust me, I send Detroit stuff all over the country. And I get emails telling me where they used to live.
But yeah, I get what you are saying.
England is odd in that a lot of people pick a team to support not necessarily in the town/city they live in. Where in the US usually it is completely based on that with a few exceptions.
