David Lee MUSCLES R.I.P.

Post by spzretent »

While he only posted here sporadically his posts were never dull.
Challenging, in your face, and sometimes just batshit crazy.
I have known Dave or Muscles as he was known here (also as Madonna) for over 30 years. I met him selling records to a bunch of cool high school kids. Him being one. This went on for over a decade.
Always outspoken and the center of attention.
He died a few weeks ago suddenly.
He was supremely talented as the Majesty Crush song Grow I will link here will prove.
He was a born front man.
Fly free brother.

The arrow in the youtube.music pic points to him.

Very sad to hear this. He was a wild card for sure but - as you say - never dull. I think most regulars here found themselves drawn into an exchange with him at some point.

For me Majesty Crush's 'Uma' is the song that shows he had genuine talent. Fabulous tune & Muscles's vocal is really superb.

Sporadic poster or whatever, I will miss him. RIP indeed.

What the fuck???? whats happened? What have i missed?

He was bonkers to say the least and could be a little over-bearing at times, but i saw a real kindness and selflessness in him on a few occasions that made me think he was just a troubled soul. He gave my daughter a dedication in the sleeve notes of the Dear Kate album for her birth and its her prized possession :(

Really sad to hear this.

Yeah, very sorry to hear this tragic news.

His posts were often inflammatory, usually scathing but frequently hilarious - I miss that stuff to be honest, and it would be most welcome at this time on this forum. He certainly took no prisoners...

I remember his outré method for gaining access to the best spaces in gigs and free drinks... photographic evidence was displayed here way back when. I'll also remember his kind and thoughtful PMs.

Cheers Dave X

Out of the former members who no longer post, muscles (Godspeed) and twentysixdollars are the two of those I miss most. You might not always have agreed with them, but they were entertaining, thought provoking and certainly knew their stuff about their music. We are poorer for their absence.

I remember after reading a couple of posts of his that I thought a little obnoxious, he posted his PS I Love You songs. Pffft I thought, clicked to listen expecting to hear a pile of crap. Bugger! They were actually pretty good. I had been completely OUTMUSCLED.

RIP Muscles

That's a terrific piece. I played loads of Majesty Crush the week I heard he died and stumbled across lots of great songs I'd not heard before. I thought that band began and ended with Uma and Grow. Not so - the catalogue is full of good music. Highly recommended.

I found PS I Love You - which Muscles just sent me one day - a tougher listen. There are some decent moments on though, like I Bleed Gasoline...

Here is an interview that perfectly catches Muscles. Funny, witty, insightful, and out there.
The best part of this video starts at 19:13 with an acoustic version of Majesty Crush Number 1 Fan. Complete with his questionable dress sense(pun intended).

Very sad news. I first encountered him on Will Carruthers' old message board, and although often controversial, was always hilarious and fun to chat with. RIP Muscles :(
