Budapest - Any tips?

Post by clewsr »

Hi, bit of long shot but I know you are all cosmopolitan well traveled sophisticated people.

After some particularly long years of child rearing, myself and my Girlfriend are off to Budapest (By ourselves :D :D :D ) for much needed break in April.

Has anyone ever been? If so, any suggestions on bars, places to go, things to do would be most appreciated.

Give me a a day or two - I have been there quite a few times(my mum is from there).

What sort of things are you into? Do you already know where you will be staying?

Hey, thanks Modlab.

Not got a hotel booked yet. The trip is a 40th birthday present, so for once budget will not be the primary concern and will look for a posh hotel. We've got about 4 days there. Keen on relaxing bars, music venues maybe? Good (veggie friendly?) restaurants? Spas? Weird, odd places to see? What touristy things are worth doing? I was wondering whether we should hire a car and leave the city for the day, but I think we might be just best being still. Life has been supremely stressful as of late.

I have been several times with work. I stayed in a really nice boutique hotel in a side street just behind the opera house on the last visit (circa 2009). The city nearby is very pedestrian friendly, lots of tree lined avenues with nice cafes and restaurants. Haven't done much of the touristy thing there as I was working, but it appears to be a great place to chill out and relax. The food and drink was very good and very, very reasonable. The only thing I did do was dinner on a boat trip which was more like a massive booze cruise with some very nice cold meat and cheese to satisfy those who insisted on eating. The weather from April - October is really good, although it does get really, really muggy if it is hot.

Highly recommended.

Me and the missus are off to Budapest for a long weekend in May. We've been before, but over 10 years ago now. The last time we went we stayed around the main city centre. So, we visited places like St Mary's Island, the Parliament building, the labyrinth (which seems to be shut now: https://www.labirintus.com/the-attack - sounds a bit crazy!) , Hero's square. I seem to remember a big park with a open air market on. We stayed in the Gellert Hotel, which has a lovely thermal spa which anyone can use - very nice if you like that sort of thing: http://gellertspa.com/).

We are definately doing this when we go, which we haven't done before:

There were plenty of Veggie food when we went (I'm Vegan, and I didn't have any trouble). I always look at the happycow website:

Looks like there is still plenty of choice!

Hotels:
CORINTHIA HOTEL BUDAPEST: High end with pool, spa etc. at a decent price.
GELLERT: Traditional Hungarian hotel with amazing old baths.
BALTAZAR BUDAPEST - Boutique hotel on the Budaside with a nice cafe etc.

Pubs, places to eat:
Bock Bistro in the Corinthia(not sure for vegetarians)
Puder Bar
Kiosk Budapest
Boutiq’Bar
Gerbaud: is a famous cafe with a famous cake called Dobostorta.
Also, Hungarian wine is amazing. So cheap and soooooo good.

Things to do: I’ll get to this.
