Dusty Hill RIP

Post by runcible »

Absolutely gutted to read about the death of ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill. Just 72.

The guy was a pioneer of southern boogie rhythm and he and his band mates' contribution to solid throbbing fuzz-led rock can't ever be under estimated. I knew of the band but seeing them play Gimme All Your Lovin' on The Tube in the early 80s on The Tube remains a jaw-dropping musical moment for me. Never mind the beards, these guys were ultra cool anyway. I became a fan from that point on.

If you're in doubt a brief check in on the cooler-than-any-one-of-us-will-ever-be 'Jesus Just Left Chicago' from 1973 should fix that. So cool, so damn good.

Bollocks. Rest in peace Dusty. A fucking legend.

If anyone is interested this is the clip I saw in 1983 on Channel 4's The Tube (what a superb show that was!) which completely floored me at the time. I was 19 and had never heard - or seen - anything like it. Gimme All Your Lovin' comes second but it's all great. What a sound they make!
