Favorite album covers

Post by spacemanrich »

What are some of your favorite album covers. You have to either like the album and/or the band. For example, you like Iron Maiden album covers, but don't like the music or the band. Just some of my favorites, but I have others that I like as well ( in no particular order ) :

Spacemen 3 (Playing w/ Fire)
Spiritualized (LAGWAFIS)
Sonic Boom / Spectrum ( cool kaleidescope concept )
Slowdive (Pygmalion)
New Order (Power, Corruption and Lies) - gotta have a Peter Saville cover!
David Gray (New Day At Midnight)
Cocteau Twins (Heaven or Las Vegas)
VU & Nico - just a simple banana
Kraftwerk (Tour de France Soundtrack)
Any Smiths cover

Elephant Stone - The Stone Roses
How To Operate With A Blown Mind - Lo Fidelity Allstars
True Faith - New Order (not an album but a simple but cool looking design)
Fucked Up Inside - Spiritualized
Screamadelica - Primal Scream

Speaking of muff, i'm suprised no one mentioned that one Black Crowes album ( i don't remember the name of it ) where the uncensored album copy has a closeup picture of a girl's pelvic area and she is wearing a bikini bottom and a few strands of muff are sprouting forth. When i first saw that album cover, it brought a smile to my face

good call on the Factory releases. mentally fumbling for the guys name that designed most of them... peter...something...saw a display of his work in manchester...PETER SEVILLE thats it. he did the pulp cover for "this is hardcore".

loveless is a pretty timeless album cover as well.

Yeah, I hadn't really given the similarities too much consideration... good point. The vinyl version of A Ghost Is Born quite nice as well - replacing the Egg with a Nest...

It occured to me upon seeing your post about Abbey Road ep that I actually prefer the Stop Your Crying single to the cover of LICD... Its been a while since I've seen the actual covers and mixed them up...

While we're on the topic of great artwork - anyone know of a good vendor of Posters/Prints? I've spent some time looking for Spiritualized/Spacemen 3 related artwork on the net, but never with any luck.

king crimson's "in the court of the crimson king"-- classic.
the B&W hand-drawn vinyl cover for "taking drugs..."
sgt. pepper's...
bowie - "diamond dogs"
pretty much any zappa cover up to the late 70's
stereolab's design aesthetic is usually great all around
the cure - faith (wins the "looks like it sounds" award)
throbbing gristle - "20 jazz-funk greats" (classic understatement...)
coil - love's secret domain
unlike those who don't realize

on the verge of perishing;
those who do,
their quarrels are stilled.

Stone Roses Stone Roses (lemons??!11)
sorry for chipping in with generic lp cover knowledge (you know, delia smith ...), but, the lemons are a nod to french rioters and protesters who carried half-lemons in their pockets; they neutralise the effects of the tear gas used by riot police.

It's like "how much more black could this be? and the answer is 'none'...'none more black'"

Or do you mean the original one with the "greased, naked woman on all fours with a dog collar and leah round her neck being invited to smell a glove (you should see what they wanted her to smell - it wasn't a glove, believe me). It would have been better if the singer had been the victim. There is, after all, a thin line between clever and stupid.

(Someone's started a band called Duke Fame, by the way - after Duke Fame & the Fame Throwers, the band so bad they were still booing them when Tap went on stage - bu they haven't a website at the moment)
