Recent playlist - what are you playing this summer?

Post by runcible »

To revive a regular favourite. Off on my hols and know I will be playing (on the iPod) much of what I have recently deluged myself in.

Flaming Lips - Fearless Freaks live downloads
The Church - Blurred Crusade
Julian Cope - Jehovahkill
Butthole Surfers - 1988 Peel Session, plus Double Live
Spacemen 3 - live tapes
Stupid Fuckin’ Hippie 7"s
Hash Jar Tempo - various
Morning After Girls - both EPs
David Bowie - Spiders from Mars last stand boot
Brian Wilson - Smile
The Cult - Love
Lee Perry - Blackboard Jungle Dub
MC5 - various live stuff
The Chords - So Far Away
Gris Gris - various
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Your Side of Our Story
Gas Solari - various
The Heads - redio session tapes, plus '33'
Kyuss - Sky Valley
Fatman vs Jah Shaka Twin Spin
Monster Magnet - Tab, plus live Tab

An odd interpretation of the sounds of summer I think, but what the hell.

There should be a cover to go with them. But in case you missed it...

1. Wayne's Intro
2. With You, Molly's, Boston, 1986
3. Can't Stop The Spring, Norman, Okla, 1988
4. Shine On Sweet Jesus, Ausberg, Germany, 1990 or 91
5. Space Age Love Song, Chicago, Lollapalooza, 1994
6. Moth In The Incubator, Ventura, CA, 1995
7. When You Smile, Trees, Dallas, 1996
8. Sleeping On The Roof, Excerpt From First Parking Lot Experiment, Okla City, 1996

Interesting that there is nothing from the last 9 years. Says a lot about the quality of their recent material (to me anyway).

nice one runcible!

some of my summer favourites this year...have mentioned many already but hey....

tunng - 'mothers daughter and other songs'
field music - 'field music'
jamie lidell - 'multiply'
prefuse 73 - 'reads the books'
alabama 3 - 'outlaw' (liked this far more than i expected to)
ben folds - 'songs for silverman'
eels - 'blinking lights and other revelations'
fela kuti - 'black president'

also, to any fans of new electronic-y stuff who might be interested, (warmth, vieko, you might dig) i've done a new 70 minute dj mix with this here tracklist, which i've ysi'd as mp3 in two parts, you can download part 1 here and part 2 here. it should be there for a couple of days more.
i hope all that urling and coding and tagging worked! =)

hey shonn. alabama 3 yeah, it didn't grab me much first listen, then i went on a trip to the lake district and soaked it up on the ipod...and it grew on me each time. they're just one of those bands that really make me smile i reckon.

i'm busy uploading the mix again (or rather, my mate with a faster connection is) so i'll get a link up as soon as it done. =) cheers!

been listening to those records this week..

and miles dark magus and mahavishnu orchestras inner mounting flame

alternating between dubbish reggae and what americans call gothrock spiced up with the occasional fusionjazz - always get bored with the usual pop/rock during summer..dunno why

lake district, ahhh that holds a special place in my heart. i would move to cockermouth and live peacefully for the rest of my life. like a hobbit!

now speaking about electronica, i am totally clueless, i've tried some of the bands that people have namedroped here, but they all left me feeling, well blah.

under_, you seem to be quite knowing in the ways of electronica, guide me to the light. i wanna hear something that i just think "WOW" this is brilliant. i really can't stand stuff like chemical brothers, too much and too fast.

shonn

p/s- do you consider M83 electronica? because their first album is class.

hmm, dunno 'bout that...i just kind of like what i like - i'm no fountain of knowledge that's for sure. ok, i'll try and throw a few names at you but they're probably names you've already read on here - have you tried ulrich schnauss? mostly instrumental, some of his tracks are really beautiful. kind of like the m83 stuff but less scuzz-guitary, a little bit like the sound of 'autobahn 66'. khonnor's 'handwriting' album is really gorgeous and full of crazy little broken love songs. four tet's album 'rounds' is brilliant. the tunng album 'mothers daughter' really does it for me, sort of very english-sounding acoustic-electronic-folk. and of course, you can't go wrong with the ever so delightful d_rradio ;) i'll get me coat.

haha, thats just it under, i love the primals and suicide, but everything i seem to hear in the electronica genre is rapid bpm's and pulsating bass. maybe i'm confusing it with dance/trance/house.

i'm off to do some downloading, thanks.

p/s- if you havenot heard the kills latest album, no wow, i have had a complete reversal of oopinion, i'm now wholeheartedly addictedto it. it's in the same vein assuicide, very very cold. it's a great departure from the last album.

ya know i just went a took a peek at my cd collection, maybe 10 electronica albums, and then it's the generic, easily available ones.

i do need help in this field.

p/s/s- by the way chris, i still ahve a cd for you, i found it in my bag from my trip. drop me a line and i'll post it.

i don't think so, once again i am notorious amongst my friends for not knowing song titles unless it's repeated numerous times throughout the chorus.

some parts of the dvd are a bit cheesey, BUT some parts are absolutely beautiful. it is just her and a drummer.

first i'll say that i want to know more about this m83 before i write them off as some 'loveless' obsessed twats that just graduated highschool. the video was on MTV2 Subterranean this past sunday, and i guess i incriminated myself with knowing, but the video and song left me both hating and wanting to know more. fuck them for peaking interest.

and now...
in individual track form:

desmond dekker- tips of my fingers
televison personalities- parttime punks
the rulers- wrong em boyo
lloyd price- stagger lee (see previous)
soul stirrers- nearer my god (live shrine 55 rec)
roger miller- my uncle usta love me but she died
drive by truckers- women without whiskey
toussaint mccall- nothing takes the place of you
the monkees- pleasant valley sunday
toots & maytals- pressure drop
solomon burke- meet me in church
keith richards- harder they come

tapes upon request, but analog only. monkees subbed by request due to condition of recording, preclusive taste. PM for details.

played em in order, 2 turntables (zero microphone), and shut my fucking neighbors up cold at 1 AM. they did ask me about parttime punks though, to their credit, the next morn.

The current line up on the taps: Bells Amber Ale (my all time fav out of Kalamazoo), Bells Special Double Cream Stout, and, for my buds that can't stand great ale or stout, Busch.

No, I haven't heard fell from the sun. I'll have to check with the guys at Neptune. Thanks for that!

fell from the sun, if i'm not mistaken, was also available on a recording billed as opal called early recordings (rough trade, maybe)(help, anyone?) and has kendra, david, and keith mitchell who all made the opal cut. if you like/love mazzy and opal, seek it out. there's also that 1st rain parade lp, emergency 3rd rail power trip, w/ the roback brothers. jangly psych glory circa early 80's california. kills the dream syndicate, imo. david roback's one of my faves. tasteful and class dude who never overplays.

mid-mich got even further away this summer (the wife got a job in pittsburgh), but her family's from NW ohio (fremont), so i'll keep you in mind, PS.

keep the bells flowin.

Time to bump this seasonal favourite:

current playlist includes:

*Baba Zula - Duble Oryantle (mentioned it a few times, just buy it!)

*Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle

*The Last Poets - Beats, Rhyme and Revolution (pretty much invented Hip Hop in 1970...)

*The Young Gods - Live at Miles Davis Hall, Montreux 2005 ( fucking incredible bootleg of the Jazz festival with a live orchestra)

*Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Barafundle

*Ghostface - Fishscale (the Wu are back, again)

*Alarm Will Sound - Acoustica (perform Aphex Twin, bassically more or less 'Drukqs' done with a live modern classical orchestra )

*Nava Narghile comp. - 1966 - 1975 V/A Turkish Acid Rock - Middle -Eastern ragga rock ( that's it's genuine name! Esssential, even if it can't decide what to call it's self)

*Spiritualized - Friendly Fire

*AFX - Hangable Autobulb (10th anniversary edition, still sounds like it was recorded in the future, and the track 'children talking' is the funniest thing he's ever done)

*Treader series 2

*Bob Dylan - Almost Went To See Elvis (bootleg of Nashville sessions in 1969)

*V/A - Babygrande (Hip Hop compilation)

*Dom and Roland - Studio Mix April 2006 (epic drum n bass from the mighty Dom and Roland)

*Various Production - all the EP's and 12's ( I might find a way of mentioning this excellent group in every post I type, they're that good! It's the best thing I've heard in a long time. Post-Everything dubby folky crisp deep dubstepping HipHop inflicted ambiently textured catchy sublime gems from a much elusive but soon to be massive duo...so 'eclectic', taking in just about everything you could mention, without coming across all 'Beta Band'. I do like the Beta's, but nothing comes close to these, if you only buy one cd this year get their forthcoming album, even if you don't like it, which you will, it will be worth getting for the artwork on the cover, done by themselves...)

*Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
how you going with that? Everytime i listen to it it really messes my head up, theres too much going on. The first track is about 5 different songs. Genius but hard work.

For me its:

• Coxon, Provost, Wales - Acoustic Trio
• Edan - Beauty and the Beat
• Mary Wells - Oh Little Boy (What Have You Done To Me)
• Furry Lewis - Good morning Judge (never fails to floor me!)
• Johnny Cash - Man in Black
• V/U - Another View
• Spz - Live in Worthing

yeah, song cycle is a funny thing! It's like old victorian carnival music or something, bits drift in an out like a beautiful dream, littered with musical references from all over the shop. It really is a piece of work...I think Van Dyke Parks said "It didn't sell badly, just slowly". It's not too long either. Pretty much like beauty and the beat then...glad to see you're still rinsing that one  I put it on the other day again after you mentioned it, the last few tracks especially great.

hmmm Furry Lewis you say? *adds another item to list*

so, :!: VARIOUS PRODUCTION :!:

available at boomkat, and a life afirmingly awesome Breezeblock set on the inter-web.

I need to give it a proper listen too. I love the first track, Starts off bluegrass and then the orchestra comes in. And then he says its atape he made of his band. Its genius stuff. I always seem to try listening to it when Im hungover and then give up because it hurts my head. As you say theres sooo much going on.

Had a bit of a Monday nighter yesterday. Dirty boy! Ended up pulling out Edan for the unitiated. Went down wel. too Ive said it before and I'll say it again that last track is a monster.

Yeah Furry Lewis. Came to that from Jasons script all those years ago. Listen to it on head phones and it will blow your head off. Its so raw and direct. Its like your sitting in a room with him. Have a look on the Fat Possum site. You can listen to it on there. Good Morning Judge. Amazing lyrics (sorry everythings amazing today isnt it) too. "They arrest me for murder I aint never harmed a man, They arrest for for forging, I can't even sign my own name."

I need to get back into the breezeblock, I used to tape it (remember them) religiously every week. I used to love it when they got bands in to DJ who normally dont play out at clubs. Get such a wide variety of music.
I have gone off the whole dance scene a bit. It just started to get so tired. But I think now the kids are taking it back it seems to have a new breath of life. i need to start delving in again.

Just finished John Peels book and it mentions him getting really into that whole scene when it sprung up in London. He got all the kids in to DJ and moost of them were under 18. quality.

I still did tape it on 120 minute cassette right up until a couple of months ago when the machine decided it likes the taste of them! I started to get the mp3s off that link I sent you a while ago, but now that seems to be down as well. Mary-Anne Hobbes has gone abit 'gangsta' these days and forgotten about the obscure stuff. And she's even stopped playing an old classic at the beggining! I yearn for the days of yesteryear when the Breezeblock was on twice a week, and it was longer. But it still churns out exclusive tunes you wouldn't hear anywhere else, just recently there was a duo that go under the name of...

From your description that Good Morning Judge reminds me of 'Miller's Blues / murder in the heart by Moby Grape...

I forgot to mention I've been listening to

*Moby Grape - Dark Magic. recently

That Ghostface album is excellent, right enough! I've played '9 Milli Bros' again and again. That is just amazing!

I'd say that, 'Country Girl', and '3121' by Prince. Some of the new Pearl Jam is good... some.

New King Biscuit Time anybody?

I dunno Orbie, it looked real enough. Can't remember where the gig was...maybe the QMU? There was a support act mentioned, but Glasgow's evil heat today has erased my memory of who it was too.

He was meant to be playing as King Biscuit Time as part of the Great Escape Weekend here in Brighton next weekend but I'm sure I read somewhere that he's pulled out and has quit the music business alltogether. Can't remember where I read that, may have been NME.com.
