Chaos in New Orleans

Post by spacemanrich »

There is mass chaos in New Orleans and no part thanks to the people who voted George W.Bush into office :

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... EHC2S1.DTL

Wealthiest nation, yet chaos in organizational efforts, lack of supplies and no presence of the National Guards during the first 48 hours (most are in Iraq). Money that could have been used to fortify the levees were diverted to Iraq.

Is the nation safer now ?

...I'd like to add best wishes to all who are caught out there or know those in the middle of it all - good luck, sincerely.

...the footage i have seen on tv is mindblowing.

I heard W called the event "historic"... that'll make everyone feel better right?

Maybe not the time or place, but when Reagan was in power, his chief adviser's advice was "...not to worry about the environment as it can only be a few generations until the Lord returns..."

Who knows...as far as climate change goes, surely we are all responsible, right up to our necks...

Cheery thoughts for Friday night!

Go easy everyone...

It does look pretty fucked up over there. Bush has looked even more clueless than usual whenever I've seen him on TV talking about it all. I also seen something on Teletext about Fats Domino being missing.

It isn't just W that looks clueless.
Its every person from FEMA too.
And to think they knew someday this was going to happen.
The director of FEMA seems to be living in alternate reality. I saw him interviewed twice in 12 hours between last night and this moring and he wouldn't admit to this being the biggest colassal fuck up in the history of this country. He kept saying everything was under control.
Really? Tell that to the tens of thousands of now homeless people who have no food, water, shelter, clothing and are quickly losing their dignity.

You know what though, it has lifted my spirits no end knowing Fats is OK.

I read an interview last month (i think) in Mojo (again) and he came across as a total gent, the interviewer confirmed his recipe for gumbo was legendary!

Roll on.

Hope Mac Rebbenbac made it out of there too.

And the Toussaints....

Ethnic clensing by another name, disgusting and shows the fine fine line between order and anarchy
nice to know the survivors are now being called refugees, rather than ' our fellow citizens'

be interesting to see the response if this happened in NYC/ Texas /or his bro's hood in florida.

the aid came quicker to thailand in Jan than it did in N.O.

Dr. John played the Blues on the Cass River festival this past Friday here in Michigan. He stated that his entire horn section is missing in New Orleans.

That is taking cynicism to an extreme. This administration and all who are involved may be guilty of extreme stupidity but people were told to evacuate. Yes there were many who had no means to but you will find that in any major American city. Thank god most cities aren't below sea level. It could have been Tampa, Pensacola, Corpus Christi, Mobile(which got nailed but isn't really mentioned much).
The sad thind is they knew this was going to happen someday. But this idiot who was appointed head of FEMA, w/absolutely no credentials whatsoever, fucked up in the biggest imaginable way. His credentials were that he was head of some Arabian Horse league somewhere. He was appointed by cronyism(sp?). Another feather in the cap of W. Who not only has egg all over his face but tens of thousands of dead bodies at his feet too.

it wasn't a "mandatory" evacuation until yesterday. 10 days after the storm hit. it was strongly encouraged.
believe me. every time there is a hurricane 99% of this country wonders what those who dont evacuate are thinking. but a lot of people think they can stick it out.
The key here is it hit New Orleans. which sits below sea level. and actually weathered the hurricane ok. it was the levee breaking that fucked New Orleans.

Covering Katrina: Has a More Critical Press Corps Emerged?

Post by feetsies »

from http://www.commondreams.org/news2005/0912-05.htm
"It's hard to decide which is more troubling: that it took the national press corps five years to summon up enough courage to report, without apology, that what the Bush administration says and does are often two different things, or that it took the sight of bodies floating facedown in the streets of New Orleans to trigger a change in the press's behavior."

We had to kill our patients

New Orleans: Doctors forced to 'play God'

Doctors working in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans killed critically ill patients rather than leaving them to die in agony as they evacuated hospitals, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
With gangs of rapists and looters rampaging through wards in the flooded city, senior doctors took the harrowing decision to give massive overdoses of morphine to those they believed could not make it out alive.

In an extraordinary interview with The Mail on Sunday, one New Orleans doctor told how she 'prayed for God to have mercy on her soul' after she ignored every tenet of medical ethics and ended the lives of patients she had earlier fought to save.
