Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Stopped by a record store tonight on my way home. So many albums I would have and could have bought but had to exercise restraint. In the end I did find (both on vinyl):
Black Merda - s/t
Black Merda- The Psych Funk of Black Merda
The first is a reissue of the first LP and the second a compilation of rare/unreleased tracks. I have been wanting to get these on LP for quite some time and although they are reissues they too are relatively difficult to find. Very pleased when I saw them and even better that they were only $13.99 each.
Friday night...an insanely busy week has now past and I am drinking a pint of beer, listening to these albums and looking forward to a glass of whiskey later on and the weekend to recharge my batteries.

On my way home I stopped at a record store and found:
Alan Lorber Orchestra - 'The Lotus Palace' (original LP on Verve Records).
Nice hippie, raga/sitar psych, loungey instrumental album from '69 (?). LP is in mint condition as is the cover and I only paid $10 for it!

Evie- "Hymns" (older gospel) LP [sealed]
Gertrude Behanna- "God Isn't Dead" religious LP on Word [sealed]
Sealed GEORGE FLYNN "Wound" LP Quadrophonic John Cage Winter Music 1974 [sealed]
"IRAKERE" S/T Sealed LP 5Trx 1979 Cuban - [sealed]
Rolling Stones- "Dancing With Mr J Live Europe" 1973 2x LP (Bootleg) [NEW]
Rolling Stones- "Specialty Of The House" outtakes 2x LP (Bootleg) [NEW]
Roxy Music- The Eno Years BBC Sessions 2x LP (Bootleg) [NEW]
Sigur Ros- "Live In Iceland" 3x LP set (Bootleg) [NEW]
Neil Young- "El Dorado" [NEW]

Rolling Stones (USA) "Cocksucker Blues" 12" single; Red Vinyl PROMO ONLY; [Mint]
Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here" India [Pristine] Pressed in 1978. w/ Unique to India Insert
Brian Eno "Wimoweh"/ "Seven Deadly Finns" 7" w/ Pic Sleeve [Pristine]; this one took awhile
Rudy Vallee' (6) x 16" Recordings; 1927 33 1/3 rpm Radio Programs w/ libretti. [Exceptional]
Hymns Set; "Volume 1"; 7 x 10" 78rpm w/ "I'll Fly Away" & 13 others; 1920. (I would like JP to do this song).
WWI Propaganda 10" 1918 78rpm German (Bavarian) [Exceptional, and quite rare]
WWI Propaganda 12" 1919 78rpm USA w/ (1923) signed letter by General John Pershing + Insert Sheet from the USG [Exceptional]; as an aside, the letter contains the results of a request by a Medical Technicians wife to "buy out" her husband
from the military, a practice which was not uncommon; nevertheless, the soldier REFUSED to be "bought out", and rose in rank. A nice, Historical layer of the onion one finds with such interesting, timely Sets such as this WWI 78rpm disc & Letter.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Yes, a fun album. I think it actually dates from about '67. '69 seems too late for this sitar psych pop. Lorber, as you probably know, was a producer who did countless things but my primary interest in what he churned out were the Ultimate Spinach and a few more of the Boston psych bands. This record is essentially session musicians doing a variety of cover tunes with sitars, tablas and strings. It's quite cheesy, loungey and very dated sounding. There's also a commercial/exploitative nature to it as Lorber was clearly cashing in on the Eastern sound that the hippies caught on to in '67. But, I like it!semisynthetic wrote:A VERY NICE FIND; Very Fun Stuffredcloud wrote:On my way home I stopped at a record store and found:

Oh man.....I love, love, LOVE this album. I never knew they released it on vinyl! I love this album so much that I ended up buying numerous copies and gave it to several friends as a gift.spzretent wrote: Micheal Head & The Strands- Magical World Of Original UK LP
I also saw Head's later band, Shack open for Mercury Rev. They were very good and he played a couple tunes from the Strands record. I think he also had a band that he was with before he recorded the Strands album that opened for Arthur Lee and Love on one of Arthur's revival tours.
'Quah' too is a good record. Nice cover art on that one.

pretty sure Mick and John Head backed Arthur Lee rather than opened for him , before Arthurs jail time , theres a live cd somewhere ,Arthur Lee couldn`t believe 2 brothers from Liverpool knew his back catalouge inside out, redcloud wrote:Oh man.....I love, love, LOVE this album. the Amazon reviews are uniformly dreadful,I imagine they come from Shack/Arthur Lee fans ,but it was kinda fanfared at the time ,and I seem to remember one track being on an Uncut free cd ,it was rough and ready as I remember but listenable, might try and track down a download out of curiosity,

I remember that Uncut CD too!! it was kind of rough and ready but they nailed the songs. I think the song on the free CD was A House is Not a Motel.niamhm wrote: pretty sure Mick and John Head backed Arthur Lee rather than opened for him , before Arthurs jail time , theres a live cd somewhere ,Arthur Lee couldn`t believe 2 brothers from Liverpool knew his back catalouge inside out,

after reading about Shack in the magazine I went out and bought their then-latest album HMS Fable- a good album which I still put on from time to time. the songwriting prowess and the melodies are towering (they were like Oasis but with more heart and soul), the only thing was the production was a bit too big and shiny (I think they were almost trying to get on the Britpop bandwagon a couple of years too late).
a while later I bought another album called From Corner of Miles and Gil... didn't like that one as much at all, nowhere near as distinctive and I ended up selling it. from what's being said on this thread I should check out this Strands album.
I saw them live once too and they were pretty good.

Possibly best email of the year Ordered both yesterday. Had enquired about d/l code for the vinyl and there's a possibility CF members will be getting one next week. Also ordered that 7" with the Sonic Boom remix that was posted elsewhere. Almost €49 on a 7",12", and CD Fucking exchange rate is a killer. Dunno how anyone outside of Europe can afford to buy music mail order from Britain, as the rates are even worse than the euro. Ah well....

Cardinal Fuzz, the rather excellent label set up by our very own Dave C (sonic124) and a few others. Basically the Optical Sounds fanzine setting up its own label. There was a membership scheme started earlier this year that filled up very quickly. I think there may be plans to increase membership sometime in the future. Can't describe it as gold vinyl though. Think sample, but taken 12 hours after much ale was consumed, just as the hangover kicks in....

Re: BAD BOOTLEGGED ENO PIECE
Just a sort of "Warning" of a interesting rarity that has been fairly well bootlegged; so pay bootlegged prices.
In 1979, 1000 copies of a project w/ Brian Eno called "In a Land of Clear Colours" was released. This is a sort of talking album/ story with Eno providing the music. It is really nice, and I recommend it. In 1979/1980, I purchased a copy for $125.00.
I purchased what APPEARED to be a "very nice" copy on e-Bay. It was seemingly very well "copied"; but the quality of the vinyl was terrible; I did not even put it on the turntable. There SHOULD have been a Certificate that describes the Master Stamper was destroyed; this certificate is MOUNTED on the inside of the Gatefold Booklet and that in turn, is inside a slip-case cover. The Booklet was copied poorly/ off-center; and the slip-case was OVERSIZED by 2cm+.
There was a FRAUDULENT "certificate" in the booklet; I would not have minded if the booklet was "imperfect", but the vinyl? NO WAY! After I called a Dealer I've used for years, I was told that there are quite a few of these badly bootlegged recordings, and the errors that give it away I have listed above. What REALLY pissed me off was this was supposed to be a Christmas present for a good friend; so, I don't mind Bootlegs, - I COLLECT THEM! But, this was sold as the real deal, and I expect nothing less than FANTASTIC SOUND!
Anyway, I hope my (short-term) loss will help anyone out there avoid being taken in, (as I was).
I should have more carefully compared this copy with the "authentic" one.
I Wish You ALL a VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

Stocking up on records I haven't got around to owning on vinyl:
The Soft Boys - A Can of Bees
Scott Walker - Scott 3
Wire - Pink Flag
Wire - Chairs Missing
Spectrum - War Sucks
Flaming Groovies - Teenage Head
And a few others:
Can - Horror Trip in the Paperhouse (vinyl pressing of a 1972 concert recorded in Cologne. It's very very good)
"Under the Covers Vol. 2" - a tribute to The Nerves done by a friend who runs a record label in San Diego (Volar Records).
Graveyard - Lights Out
Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
I also preordered the new Pissed Jeans and Nick Cave albums.

Brilliant record. You should get 'Flamingo' too. The older I get the more I love and appreciate this band who Bill Graham hated.toomilk wrote: Flaming Groovies - Teenage Head

I took my son to basketball practice today and killed some time thumbing through records nearby...found this in the bins:
FAT - s/t (1970 on RCA Records in VG+ condition)
Pretty accomplished bluesy hard rock album with tight playing and decent songwriting. Apparently less than 500 of these were printed? If so, I got a score at $20.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
So many Really good, or sometimes GREAT STUFF appears from this era, c. 1964-1974, that seems to have just gotten lost in the crowd; so I almost always pick up music, if it is in satisfactory condition, from that time period. It is very pleasant to see music that DID "get lost in the crowd" be rediscovered; and I find, oftentimes, that these "lost" pieces have been found; I spent an hour or so the other evening typing in favorite obscurities on YouTube, and was very pleased to see some of the "lost" examples displayed. It is also great fun to discover something hitherto unknown to me, that I really LIKE!redcloud wrote:I took my son to basketball practice today and killed some time thumbing through records nearby...found this in the bins:

Gnod - Dwellings & Druss
Still awaiting this as its a pre-order from Trensmat
The Heads - Inner Space Broadcasts Volume 1 Part 1
Not the coloured copy direct from Cardinal Fuzz that i was desperately after, but the black vinyl edition....(the last copy in my local record store none-the-less )
Fuxa - Electric Sound of Summer
This was already on my records wish list and managed to pick it up in the sale in my local record store for £12...lovely sounding LP
Spectrum - Soul Kiss Glide (Glide Divine)
Original non-oil copy bought on E-Bay. I was the only bidder as the seller didn't post a picture of the LP. Arrived today and record is in great condition apart from a slight bend on the sleeve probably caused by insufficient packaging. Oh well, I'm over the moon with it anyway
Neil Young - Psychedelic Pill
Picked this up on CD for £6 in the sale in my local record store. Had to have a copy of it on CD to play in the car and burn onto my iPod. Can't believe there wasn't a CD or download code included in the triple vinyl edition that my girlfriend bought me for Christmas at £63...but then I guess it would be a bit hypocritical seeing as the first song on the album berates quality of CDs and MP3!!!

Shines, I could have given you a copy of my vinyl transfer. I was also irritated at the lack of download with the Psychedelic Pill 3xLP, but I suppose it's not surprising. I wonder if Neil's Pono project will get off the ground. It'll be interesting. Reports so far have been that they sound way better than mp3s.
I picked up a few things recently:
Primal Scream : Beautiful Future (3xLP box)
Neil Young : Live at Canterbury House '68 (2xLP)
Aphex Twin : I Care Because You Do (reissue 2xLP)
Carter Tutti Void : Transverse (LP)
Voice of The Seven Thunders : Blue Comet Remixes (LP)

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Today is my birthday and my wife gave me an original issue copy of:
The Savage Resurrection LP (Mercury SR 61156)
No, she has no idea what it is nor how rare the LP is but I saw it the other day and hinted I would love to have it and what they were selling it for was a good price. They managed to knock a further $5 off it too. LP in VG+ and cover has a bit of damage to the art along the bottom (thus the good price).
I've only ever had this album on tape and it's a great one. One of the best. So, I'm happy to now own an original (even if the jacket has some wear and tear).

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Had a bout of record buying madness the last week or so but, before anyone calls the NSPCC, I haven't been using Baby Dylan's milk and nappy money to fund my habit! Anyway, here are the last 5 chunks of wax I've spent my dough on:-
Dead Skeletons - Dead Magick
It may not be the double coloured version I was hoping to get my hands on, but so glad I've finally got this on vinyl. The store I got it from on Amazon have also offered to refund me 25% of the cost due to the fact it wasn't the coloured version
Spacemen 3 - Sound of Confusion (Original on Glass Records)
Neil Young - Freedom
Finally managed to track down the Glass pressing of SOC after watching loads of the Fire copies coming and going on E-Bay and the cheapest Glass copy I've seen on there or Discogs has gone for around £40. Saw this almost prisitne copy in a small second hand record and furniture shop in Brighton for £25. Mrs Shines said I went very quiet when I found it. I picked up a copy of Neil Young's Freedom, (in immaculate condition, still it's cellophane wrap but opened) at the same time which was going for £8 but got the 2 records for £30...result.
Anthroprophh - S/T
Lovely sleeve, but haven't really had a chance to listen to this yet. And what is it with Rocket's stance of no download codes?
My Bloody Valentine - MBV
May have spent over an hour between 4 and 5am last night trying to buy this but I am hoping that it was worth it. Still haven't had 5 mins to listen to it yet.

Following the use of some vouchers and stuff I've enjoyed a recent binge (or as near as it comes these days...)
The Asphodells - Ruled By Passion, Destroyed by Lust. Just ordered! New album from one Mr Andrew Weatherall with Timothy J Fairplay. Really looking forward to this arriving. The Asphodells track on last years Masterpiece by AW was fantastic...
Andy Allo - Superconductor. Awesome Prince-affiliated super-funky shit. Youtube "People Pleaser". Amazing.
Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man 40th Anniversary Edition - YEAH! Inspired record to wheel out the deluxe/special edition/cashcow treatment for - a seductive, beautiful record in the first place so really looking forward to soaking this up - remastered (praying for a sensible master) and with loads of extra tracks, takes and the original movie OST. The other deluxe editions of MG's albums have been really good so I have high hopes.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
thanks man! I've been making a concerted effort to get into the jazz/noise side of things lately. that Sun Ra album is sublime- fat, funky grooves on the drums overlaid with all kinds of free, floaty jazz textures on top.
only briefly listened to the Sonny Sharrock but it sounds like a totally unique record. gonna give it a proper listen over next couple of days
