Yay! Now I have Sound of Confusion. I also bought the extended version of "The Sound of The Smiths".

Actually, I decided to get the Complete Works Vol. 1 and I put back Performance because it was 18 euros. ^^ But then they brought in new records and I just had to get Sound of Confusion. :D

Sounds premature to say this but "End Times" is so far my favorite record of 2010. Absolutely love it. But then again, most everything Mark puts out is gold. This one, however, is very, very special.

so you haven't heard these albums before? if not then I am certainly jealous likes Ads says, of you hearing these for the first time!

A lot of people still rate A Storm In Heaven as Verves best, but I still think ANS is a total masterpiece.

Agreed, ANS is the greatest Verve album. Imagine hearing that for the first time ever today. Nice touch! I remember getting drunk on whiskey alone in my room to that after splitting with an ex. The line "another drink and I won't miss her" was something I was aiming for. Not sure it worked.

Does it still come with the the cardboard fold out sleeve on the cd, with the inserts that form a band pic of them in a diner or something?

AStorm In Heaven is a close second but doesn't have the same impact.

My most recent purchase is the new Archie Bronson Outfit album, Coconut, with the bonus dvd. Had it as a copy for 3 weeks but needed to buy it proper. If you hop over to their official website you get to see all the videos to all the songs. Great band, great album.

oh aye, it's great to think of it still blowing minds now. It was the perfect soundtrack to my teenage angst (and infact my grown up angst- never did have much luck with the ladies.. :) ), but it's also so much more than just that.. I love the thick juicy production, its so much more heavy than A Storm In Heaven in every way. Reprise continues to blow my mind every time.

Funny that you mention those inserts, I've got a big NME ad for the album on my wall, which describes the "ltd edition digipack with 6 postcards" and I've always wondered why no one ever mentioned that edition, never even seen it on ebay or anything.

The first track is fucking amazing, but Ive got to give the rest of the album more of a listen before I make any kind of conclusion. Really want to see them live....in the process of asking a young lady to come and join me for the gig. Will keep you posted.

I really like the track I've heard too (it was one of the title tracks that they gave away as a free taster) quite guitar based which bodes well for the gigs- I'm seeing them on Wednesday myself. Let me know how you get on with the rest of the album (and the young lady!)

it was superb- don't think you'll disappointed. Mostly new material so I was only familiar with one song, but they played brilliantly. Two violins, double bass, Efrim on guitar n vocals and the drummer also played some keyboards (sometimes while drumming at same time which impressed me). It was quite epic- only 6 songs or so in an hour and a half.

Also, rather surprisingly Efrim indulged in a lot of funny stage banter between songs.. always had the band down as very serious types.

as for the lady, you never know, I hope the music has that effect for you.. there was certainly a couple right in front of me who were sucking each others faces off. :)

I was at them last night in Dublin. Better than i expected, mainly cos i'd only one album of theirs and it bored me senseless, but i decided to give them a go in a live setting and it was decent enough, would've liked an extra guitar though. I too was surprised at the funny banter in between songs, very much had them down as incredibly earnest unsmiling types! Efrim had a cold that he reckoned would make his voice sound like a horse vomiting whilst the double bass player has a herniated disc but is carrying on with the tour in agony.
So the drummer was playing keyboards then? I couldn't see that from my vantage point, i'd just assumed it was a backing track.

Enjoy.

I too thought it was a backing track to start with, and remember thinking I wasn't happy about that. Then I noticed the drummer was doing it all on a little keyboard stand to his left.

The banter surprised me too. I didn't think the band would speak at all, let alone have merry banter with the audience. I had them down as 'serious artists' who think everyone else are capitalist pigdogs, but there you go.

Spent quite a bit on CD's in the last week or so after finally clearing a massive debt thats been hanging over my head for quite some time. Worked out that this is the first time I've been debt free since Uni back in 92! And what better way to celebrate than going out and spending a load of cash on music (that L&GWAFIS double vinyl purchase may even be on the cards now!).

Black Angels - Passover (had to get this after re-visiting their last album and getting excited over news of a new album)
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Who Killed Sgt. Pepper (not what I was expecting at all after watching Dig)
BRMC - Beat The Devils Tattoo (not brilliant, not awful....kind of BRMC by numbers really)
Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue (had to buy this after watching the doc on BBC4. Some great songs on here)
Drive By Truckers - The Big To Do (really liking this - really want to see them tour the UK)
White Hills - White Hills (only given it one listen so far but sounding good - gutted I missed their recent Brighton gig)
Yellow Swans - Going Places (listening to it now)

What is weird, is that all the recent albums I've been buying are American artists. Whats going on with new British music?

Is this your first BJM album? If it is, I certainly would not start with Anton's most recent records. I recommend you start with earlier releases such as "Their Satanic Majesties Second Request", "Take it From the Man" or "Give It Back" first. These are the classic albums by BJM. "Give It Back" is what they were recording in some of the scenes in the movie.

My personal favorite BJM though is "And This Is Our Music" and "Bravery Repetition & Noise".

I see Matt Hollywood a lot in bars around Portland. I know he has recently been invited to join BJM again and toured Australia/NZ and will continue to do so in Europe and USA. But, I've always wondered why he didn't go on to do bigger things after BJM. His one band, The OutCrowd released two decent BJM/Dandy Warhols sounding albums but then sort of disappeared. He also fiddles around in the Rebel Drones a Peter Holmstrom (Dandies guitarist) side project that also includes BJM bassist Collin Hegna and Plucky from Spindrift but they too rarely play due to everybody's other commitments. He's a talented guy...seems he could have put something together that is/was more long lived.

Yeah, that was my first foray into the world of BJM and certianly wasn't prepared for that. Runcible has given me some pointer on where to start with their back catalogue as well and he highlighted "And This is Our Music" too. Going to see if I can track them down.

By the way, redcloud, did you hear the news that Sleepy Sun are releasing a new album soon (http://www.atpfestival.com/newsview/1003171457.php). I am right in remembering you were a fan of their work arent I?

This is an astounding album...having only ever heard snippets of Yellow Swans previously.
Immediately one of my albums of 2010 and I'm sure it'l figure highly on many prominent music charts at the end of the year.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. For me; this is where guitars should be at. Total music within music dancing on music to take music too.

I'm cautiously working my way into the Type label; Svarte Greiner (one half of Deaf Centre) is another pleasure.
Also the latter works from label founder Xela are special.

I certainly have enjoyed it on the couple of listens I've given it so far. Certainly not an album which you can hum along too but its certainly got something pretty special about it. Wonderful soundscapes and reminds me in places of Mogwai. I remember seeing them a few years back in Brighton upon a recommendation from Shaun/The Jig. Very strange gig in a practice studio and they had 2 tables just full of pedals and sound making paraphenalia. Can't even remember if they had any guitars but I may be wrong.

Absolutely! Sleepy Sun are a great band. They are also a truly wonderful live band. By chance, I just happened to catch them live last year and was blown away. I can't recommend them highly enough!

Catch 'em when you can. They seem to be in the UK & Europe a fair amount.

Did you buy the reissue version of Vs that comes with the DVD? It has a full gig on it that is pretty amazing. It's funny to see people "moshing" to Mission of Burma.

no it's not that one, its just a straight CD reissue with a few bonus tracks. I did have a look at that one with the DVD but it was a bit expensive.
