This is a reissue. It is supposedly a "Japanese fanclub reissue" as is the Slowdive. I didn't have them on vinyl so I picked them up. They sound good enough to these ears. Others may disagree.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
luckily i got vol.1 at a reasonable price. this album reminds me of the heads' dead in the water. not always, but sometimes relentless brutality like that is a great sport. wish to get the scary one "ready to howl" asap.runcible wrote:Yeah it's the same guy - Michael Polizze. It's quite hard to listen to as it's so intense and brutally lo-fi but there's something about it that I can occasionally connect with. The last Birds of Maya album was a 3 track double LP. A scary thought.
I'm assuming stuff like Mainliner is up your street? I can take it every now and then but it's some of the most extreme music I've ever heard.
i'd never listened to mainliner. but they are japanese! it's a shame to neglect spending my money on domestic products. so i dared Mellow Out. oh what a nightmarish sound. and that's what i want! (especially chaotic groove "M.") thanks mr. runcible. you are my guru.
Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Jesus Christ - Mellow Out is perhaps the most inapt title ever conceived! It's probably the most difficult listen I know for music that actually has some structure. Really worrying - and they are totally straight edge too! Check out Imaginative Plain for a somewhat easier listen (although it remains a totally intense experience and not for the faint-hearted).
I get that Dead In The Water comparison too. Very good!

Jon Poole - What's the Ugliest Part Of Your Body? (unbelievable Zappa covers album made by one man on a 4 track with a drum machine, a DX7, guitar, bass and plenty of natural genius)
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People (best Broadcast album for me so far)
These New Puritans - Beat Pyramid (bruddy blirriant am now getting used to those too LOUD drums)
Deerhoof - The Runners Four (I get there in the end)
Shrubbies - Memphis In Texas (quite spectacularly fabulous)
I'll never be a critic.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
After an hour scurrying around in a new record in the west end of Glasgow (where the vast majority of records are just kept in cases without any description) I was just walking out and spotted the words PHIL SPECTOR on a record in a bin under the shelves...
Anyway the record (for 4 pounds!) is amazing - it's called 74 - 79 and has a bunch of tunes that are astounding, by the likes of Darlene Love, Cher & Dion and has the incredible Dion track 'Born To Be With You' as the end of side two...
Somewhat eerie however is the cover: a blonde waitress carrying drinks whilst being blasted by white shards of light, and she has a disturbed, frightened look on her face...and the record she is carrying is a Spector record laden with drinks.
Fucking weird or what???
However, the Cher tracks are MINDBLOWING!!!

I like this album. Their first LP (with the girl on the front) is perhaps their better known album thanks mainly to 'White Bird'. They were/are often dismissed because of the violin, but strangely, I like it and think it complements their sound well.
I also have their 'Live at Carnegie Hall' LP. You would be surprised by how they actually rock out in parts on the live LP.

Still not listened to disc 2 - my girlfriend hates Lou Reed so I need an afternoon alone to fully appreciate the album. Gave "Fire Music" a listen due to its reputation, though - it's immense.bunnyben wrote:what do you think about this album? did you get the 2 or 1 disc edition? how beautiful is vanishing act?mc wrote: Lou Reed - The Raven
Latest 5 (edit - oops, forgot one):
Avey Tare - Down There
Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
Earth - Pentastar: In the Style of Demons
The Secret - Solve et Coagula
David Bowie - Station to Station (3CD Special Edition)
Oh hang on, I also bought Mercury Rev - The Peel Sessions weeks ago and it's still sitting in a drawer at work unopened and ignored. I buy too many CDs

I can't remember the name! Gonna have to go back again another time though. It was just up from the foot of Byres Road, around the corner from Dumbarton road, a bit futher up on the same side you have the Oxfam books and records shop... they were open on the sunday I was there!

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
After reading some posts and a favourable review from Jarvis Cocker I picked up 'The Fool' by Warpaint.
Interesting so far. Sorta PJ Harvey made by robots. Big echoes. Nice...
Also:
Aretha Franklin 'Trilogy'
'We Fell To Earth' S/T
John Lennon 'Sometime In New York City'
Belle and Sebastian 'Write About Love'
Looking forward to listening to these mostly on the commute. However, the first track on the new Belle & Sebastian is sounding tremendous!

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
It certainly is! At first I only liked a few tracks from Write About Love but the album has steadily grown on me over the last weeks. Initially I only liked about 3 tracks, but I've grown to appreciate the others with more listening. The only other B&S album that took time to grow on me was The Life Pursuit, an album I now rate as on of their best, but didn't have the instant appeal of all the others preceding it.BzaInSpace wrote:Belle and Sebastian 'Write About Love'
...the first track on the new Belle & Sebastian is sounding tremendous!
However I still find fault with Write About Love - tracks such as 'Come On Sister', 'Calculating Bimbo', 'Read the Blessed Pages' and 'Little Lou...' just seem weak, especially having heard extracts of some of the extra 3 tracks that are not on the regular CD release, but are available on download and LP.
'The Ghost of Rockschool' retreads old B&S ground; 'I Can See Your Future' is nice enough but gets a bit tiresome too.
The stand-out tracks such as 'I Didn't See it Coming', 'I Want the World to Stop', 'Write About Love' and 'I'm Not Living in the Real World' are as good as the best from The Life Pursuit such as 'Act of the Apostle', 'Funny Little Frog' and 'Sukie in the Graveyard'.
Overall the album seems to have a happier, more optomistic vibe compared to some of the extremely caustic material on The Life Pursuit, and once again seems to be the band expanding their musical horizens, albeit not always as sucessfully as I imagine they hoped to, but I'm glad they were trying.

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
I've been on a bit of a retro trip:
13th Floor Elevators - Psychedelic Sounds
Goodspeed You Black Emperor: Yanqui UXO
Spiritualized: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space: vinyl reissue (my original skips so I never really played it much)
Ride: Box Set (nine quid on UK eBay in brilliant condition - a bargain!) The first CD I've bought for ages.
Flying Saucer Attack: New Lands (recent reissue saved from the bargain bin for A$10)
Have also spotted the reissue of the first Silver Apples album in the bargain bin. Has anyone here bought the reissue, and if so, is the quality of the pressing any good? I've come close to paying silly money on eBay for first pressings (or claimed first pressings to be more exact).
Also, is it just me or is vinyl as pain in the arse when it comes to sneaking the bloody things into the house? One area where the CD is clearly superior

This might not sound very impressive, but...
I finally got Pure Phase. Found it at HMV in London. Just the normal version, not the glowing in the dark one. But I am really happy now.

JakeCardigan: The CAVE record has some great songs on it and some that are straight up annoying. I paid $11 for it, so it was worthwhile. Send me a PM if you're serious about wanting to hear it.
I mentioned somewhere else on this board that I don't think the Plain reissue of This Is Hardcore sounds that great. It just seems muddy to me. I'm not an audiophile, but something about the pressing definitely seems off.
I just snagged a copy of Fripp/Eno's No Pussyfooting off of Ebay for a decent price. I've never even heard it, but Evening Star has been on heavy rotation for me, so I figured I'd give this on a chance. Anyone have thoughts on it?

Warmth - I've never heard it but have heard great things about it. Was just reading the other day that just prior to it's release John Peel played it backwards on his show by accident...
Apparently the studio tape played as such in the BBC's equipment. Classic!
I just picked up Apollo Kids by Ghostface Killah today - not another R&B style album it seems. No skits either!!

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that series. I bought one or two and was disappointed... I'm all for unearthing hidden gems, and was a big fan of the Brotherman 'soundtrack,' but my impression of most of the stuff on the CD I bought was that it belonged in local high school gyms and should have stayed there.toomilk wrote:Eccentric Soul: Young Disciples 2xLP
Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
Which ones have you heard? The series does have its share of misses, but they are few and far between in my opinion...
Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
I have some of the early Eccentric Soul cds and they're pretty awesome. I just couldn't afford to keep buying everything they put out. The last Numero release I purchased was Wayfaring Strangers: Guitar Soli and it's excellent:

beats many blsck sabbath albums for "heaviness" tony visconti is one fucking helluva bass player (especially when he produces the record himself )

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
After a bit of hassle with wrong stuff being sent to me, this lot arrived today:
(1) Slowdive: Blue Day (2xLP, on dark blue, one sky blue; Really nice sound - it is playing as I type. First impression: Much more bass than the CD)
(2) Spacemen 3: Perfect perscription reissue on vinyl - my original is showing its age.
(3) Spacemen 3: Playing with fire reissue on 2x 10 inch vinyl - my original is showing its age in the sense that it will be played to death soon. (I am paying big $$ to have all my original Spacemen 3 and some Spiritualized and Spectrum LPs cleaned with something called a Keith Monks machine. The same shop cleaned one of my Durutti Column albums for free the other day - its like new!!!) I'm going to put the originals away as long as the reissues aren't sh*t.
(4) THE Smiths: "Unreleased demos and instrumentals". I have this as flacs, I believe a needle drop from the same pressing and an alternative set which is take from the source used for the LP itself.
(5) The Heads: Rituals From The Heads & The Big Naturals - Vol 3
Sadly, (5) has not arrived here yet. Mrs Maskell is usually blindingly fast at getting the noise down here to Melbourne. I paid for it on Jan 21st, so hopefully it is coming as the CD has dissappeared off the Head's merch page....this is only the second CD I have bought this year. I'm almost fully back into vinyl or lossless download these days. I'm not worried about Mrs Maskell, its the thieving c*nts working for Australia post that annoy me..

Rituals From The Heads And The Big Naturals- more experimental than I expected but still interesting ,
Crass -Stations Of The Crass, remastered and repackaged beautifully as you would expect, still a challenging and uncomfortable listen ,in a good way,
White Stripes - Under Great White Northern Lights ,bumped into this by their recent split ,the cd is good but the dvd docu. is the real gem ,floating all around the expanses of Canada they just look so other wordly.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-Beat The Devils Tattoo, bought this again at Xmas as it had been made available with a live dvd ,hate when bands do that ,can you beleive I managed to loose the dvd between now and Xmas ,so had to buy it again ,including p.&p. £5.99 ,so 3 copies of the cd now,
Spacemen 3-Threebie ,got Threebie as a freebie back in the day ,but no turntable and a very reasonable price means it purchased on cd.

Pink Floyd - Pompei LP... real rare 70s bootleg, got it for £20 but there is one on discogs for hundreds... crazy!
Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?
It's gone very hip hop at Johnnyboy towers so:
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - Atliens and Aquemini*
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Missy Elliott - This Is Not A Test*
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions.......
(* re-bought after losing them amongst a clear out a year or so back)
Always had some hip hop in my collection but the last two weeks has seen it sky rocket up my play list, to the point where I'm listening to nothing else but it. The sounds, the flow, the rhythms, the sonics, all blowing me away. Comes on the back of a Jon Spencer Blues X, Beck, Black Keys and Beastie Boys month in Jan.
Current listening pleasure = DJ Shadow - Endtroducing. It's remains a slice of genius doesn't it. Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain is simply awesome.

Alright Stuart, how are you?
Just got the new Mogwai so look forward to blasting that later.
Incidentally did any locals (or otherwise) go and see their Glasgow Grand 'Ole Opry show?
