It seems to jump quite a bit during Come Together AND I Think I'm in Love. Just playing the rest of the LP now to see if there's anything else. To be honest... I bought it to add to the collection rather than play a load but, I'd like to listen to it on the odd occassion so maybe I'll just have to go out and buy the reissue too now?

Also, shouldn't there be some tracklisting, production notes sheet with this like there was for the CD edition?

Yes - it should have that prescription leaflet inside. Sounds like it's missing. I hope the inner sleeves are printed...?

Yeah, the inner sleeves are printed so no worries there. Also, having adjusted the weighting on the tone arm on my turntable, the record is now playing perfectly. What a relief, thought I'd bought a dud...though still a bit gutted about the lack of insert sheet, but seeing as I only (can't believe I'm saying only!) paid £60 I guess I can't have everything

Wilco - I Might 7"
Stephen Malmus & The Jicks - Mirror Traffic LP (though returned a warped copy so waiting for a replacement)
Tom Waits - Bad As Me LP pre-order
Wilco - The Whole Love double LP pre-order

Trying to reduce my record (vinyl) buying as it was averaging around €100 a month which I currently can't afford. Two chisler/kids and a mortgage etc etc. Looking forward to the three LPs big time though

Instead of sensibly putting some of my latest paypacket towards stuff like bills and food, I've heroically and/or foolishly blown a lot of it on music.

In my defense, it had been some time...

On order and pre-order:

Death In Vegas - Trans-Love Energies
Machine Code - Environments
Nirvana - Nevermind - 20th  Anniversary (gettin' old) Remaster/repackage/tacky badge etc.
ThunderCat - The Golden Sound of Apocalypse
Cave - Neverendless
Finn Peters - Yellow/Purple
Primal Scream & MC5 (!) - Black To Comm : Live at the RFH

Good times ahead...

Snap - I actually listened to In Utero first although before that I was aware of this thing called Nirvana and this guys voice. This was in school. Tapes of Nevermind were floating about. From there I devoured everything I could find. I remember wondering if Bleach was the same band by the cover, despite the similar typeface it looked like a real metal album y'know?

I also remember there was CDs by those 60s hippies called Nirvana also in the same section in the local record shop too which confused matters somewhat at that age. Least I never bought anything by them in error... as many must have done!

So, really the 20 year thing is no biggy, like you it's only 18 years (gulp).

I fucking love, love, love Nirvana. :D

Have to say, I liked Nirvana at the time but I LOVED the Screaming Trees. I always thought they were the best band out of Seattle.

Interestingly, my 11 year old son has recently discovered Nirvana and is now absorbing everything he can that is "grunge". His guitar teacher just taught him the chords to "Smells like Teen Spirit" (and keeps telling him to get that "bouyant swing" in his notes). He also recently did a school project that focused on grunge. We had great fun walking over the paper with DM's on (to get the footprints), staining it with coffee rings and burning it to make it look "grungy". He also saw the trailer to this and asked if I would take him to see it:

...holy SHIT! Unreleased dub plates and rare mixes from the greatest man in the history of reggae . Volume 1 consists of familiar tunes that have been stripped down and rebuilt into massively spliffed-out psychedelic pieces that sometimes barely scrape the reggae category. Volume 2 features more conventional roots and dub but of such high quality it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Any fans of Scarcth's work must not miss these essential releases. I'm glad someone else is enjoying these Perry delights. After all the reggae talk here these CDs are what the very core of roots dub is all about. Lee Perry is the ultimate example of this - ludicrously basic equipment making sounds that are timeless. He remains the greatest genius in the history of music for me.

Yep these have snuck onto my list...

I went a bit music shopping crazy and picked up some ace stuff from Rough Trade, Boomkat and eBay:

The Temptations - Ball of Confusion 7" single
Radiohead 12" - Jamie XX, Anstam and SBTRKT remixes
Kutmah - The New Error vol 2. (CD)
Kutmah - Sketchbook Radio MIx (CD)
Teebs & Jeremiah Jae - Hit + Run x Rough Trade Mixtape vol 1. (Cassette)
King Midas Sound - Goodbye Girl 12"
Samiyam - Sam Baker's Album LP
Skull Disco - Soundboys Suicide Note
Tokimonsta - Cosmic Intoxication

Beats and bass it seems for me recently, plus that Temptations song is so beautiful

Last five albums/lp's you bought - reprise

Post by BzaInSpace »

BzaInSpace wrote: Cave - Neverendless

Neverendless - only spun through half of it once, so bear this in mind, but after reading the frenzied reviews of their live thing I'm not immediately blown away. Tight motorik rhythms, tasty basslines, nice riffs... check. But I'm missing the all-out white-noise craziness I expected. Will listen again. Maybe the live show is really where it's at?

Environments - absolutely killer album (or compilation maybe) of various tracks by Machine Code (aka Dean Rodell & Current Value) who trade in extraordinarily heavy, heavy d'n'b/dub/deathstep(?) madness. I seen these guys live last year and it was very special indeed. I've been listening to this with a big smile on my face and I am itching to play it very loud indeed. From their press release:
"Environments" has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry's factory, mixing up machine funk in a ¼ step style with the likes of the already hailed classic "Machine Freak" and the floor pounding "Circadian," blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . "In the Shell" and "Confessions" offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code's "Environments" -- "Kjg" is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. "The Shadow" is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass lines to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake...
Epic future dub goodness!

BZA: When I think CAVE, I don't think unhinged white-noise craziness. IMO, Neverendless captures their live energy pretty well. I was listening to Psychic Psummer the other day and I think I actually like that album a bit more than the new one, but still ... not much white noise on there.

There's little all-out white noise craziness to be found, if at all. The rest of your description is spot on. Live they sound pretty much like this album but it takes on an intensity that's hard to describe and captivates you in a similar to how Wooden Shjips do. It just sounds better. And Rex's drumming is also an incredible sight which adds to the dimension.

I like Psychic Psummer too but I prefer Neverendless. Do you think the first track from PP - Gamm - has elements of Medication about it? I've heard that said before. Check it out:

Runcible - Yes, I definitely hear a Spiritualized-esque sound throughout "Gamm," but it reminds me of "Electricity," rather than "Medication."

from various areas around Bayswater/Notting Hill/Camden over the weekend:

vinyl:

Beach Boys - Surf's Up
John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
Bob Dylan - Street Legal
David Bowie - Lodger
V/A - Black Gold (Atlantic - amazing classic soul comp)
Aphrodite - Aphrodite Recordings (classic! :D )
Royal Trux - Sunshine & Grease EP

Nothing cost more than £10 - in fact only the Lennon album was - most was less than a fiver.

I also picked up a bunch of cds including Spiritualized - Amazing Grace 4 Track Sampler, Prince's Batman OST, Rawkus Records Sampler Vol 1 and various singles by Archie Bronson Outfit, Jimi Tenor, McAlmont & Butler, Daft Punk and the legendary Rachel Stevens, among others.

Well pleased at the haul!

Acetates are strange things. The only one I have is super heavy and feels more like a plate than a record. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the degrade in quality much more than regular records do per spin.

I just got back from the CAVE gig at Hideout. Fantastic.

I'm no too sure about the CAVE album in some ways. I really enoy it, but there are points when I feel that they are about to really let rip, and then nothing happens. I would love the opportunity to se them play live, but.....

As for the acetate, it is GNOD, so it'll be fun but lo-fi. Can't see it degrading too badly, if you get my drift.....

It is true that certain "acetates" are like dinner plates; some are negative stampers, some are positive stampers,
some are metal discs with a variety of coatings; originally these were sort of a quicky test pressing, for use in house, and then trashed. France seems to have adopted in the late 1960's to mid 1980's, a more reasonable approach; that is, a truly FLAT metallic disc is well covered in a vinylic material, so that this "acetate" can be used not only as a three time plays and you're out, but many were also used as Promotional discs; The Earliest French acetate I own of the Pink Floyd, is not surprisingly, "Arnold Layne"/ "Candy and a Currant Bun"; the last Floydian French acetate I aquired was also the last I know of, from the "Gilmour Floyd", "On the Turning Away". Acetates from the 1920s, if they are in excellent condition, can better be enjoyed on more modern equipment than the disc itself is. Rarely do I play an acetate unless it is pristine, and that is not very often, and/or if the acetate contains takes that were NOT ultimately used. A British acetate of "Let's Roll Another One", (Candy and a Currant Bun) is an excellent example, although the profanity in the released disc (1967) I suppose got by because the "Man" was just out of touch with what he/she was hearing. Acetates are excellent bits of History; and some provide excellent quality sound, but I play them once only onto a reel-to-reel. At least, that is my method.

Have Fun.

Sun Araw - Ancient Romans
War on Drugs - Slave Ambient
Bjork - Biophilia
White Denim - D
Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
Sly & the Family Stone - There's A Riot Going On

Good luck with that. I've found that been in a serious relationship has killed my music listening time. When i was single it was 2 or 3 albums a night, now i'm lucky if i hear two a week!!!! I still haven't even heard any of the boots from last week. Must have at least 100 albums to listen to, nevermind all the stuff i've downloaded for nowt. :(

It must be love

Yoiks! Luckily I have those tiny Boss cube speakers up on a shelf outta reach and they don't know about the bass speaker tucked away beside the stereo.

I remember two Christmases ago when my then 3 year old was asking me to play the Dean'n'Britta & Sonic Old Toy Trains 7" when she lifted the tonearm and slammed it down right in the centre label, thank feck. I nearly had a hernia as there were only 500 pressed (still available though). I have good vinyl storage boxes that completely cover the records now.

shit, man.. I am a married father with a twelve year old relationship and still listen to about three records worth (often more) every day. Sure, sometimes I have to listen thru damn headphones 23:00-02:00 to get my fix.
Blasting it out loud through speakers is of course the ideal, but.. owning a 100 records you never heard.. is not extreme - it´s insane! (no offense)
