4 stick in the mind:

How the Blues Shoulda turned out - Thanks Sonic, worth 40 notes of any spacemen 3 fans money.
Edgar 'Jones' Jones Soothing Music for Stray Cats. - possibly my favorate of the year
Stirling Roswell - The Psychedelic Ubik - has no one else checked this out??
Engineers - Engineers. Possibly my other favorate of the year.

I've just ordered The Beta Band Best of. - got all the tracks, but though it was worth a punt for the live show on the second disk. Also order BRMC's new one. Been meaning to buy the new Super Furries one as well.

Thats got me tempted. Made an order. Cheers.

Now to start with the Staple Singers. ABN - where do I start?

hey clewsr, thumbs up, you certainly won't be disappointed with dusty in memphis.
dunno if you're into 'best of' type compilations, but i got this cheap staples one recently and it's an excellent collection of their earlier gospel-y stuff. there seems to be loads of comps available of their 70's stax stuff...'i'll take you there', 'respect yourself' etc... i got this one and it's also ace.

SulkyKid, I forgot to include Ian Brown's Greatest in my list!

I bought the deluxe edition too. It's a gorgeous package. Love the book-style format of it.

The accoustic cover of The Sex Pistol's Submission is fantastic.

haven't got as far as Submission yet....only got it this morning...was playing it in the car but somehow kept feeling the need to replay Billie Jean over and over....Oooowwww choumon mutherfuckers !!

hey clewsr, my main man under_ beat me too the punch.

personally though, i'm not a fan of the 70's funk(y) style. 'respect yourself' and the rest really don't touch my soul the way the earlier tracks do.

i would suggest that whatever you buy, make sure the following tracks are included: 'may the circle be unbroken' 'nobodys fault but mine' and 'this train'.

this way you know that you are getting the earlier tracks. they also do some fantastic covers of bob dylan (it's impossible to get away from dylan) also my favourite version of 'this little light of mine', alright alright sam cooke does my fav, but this ones a close second.

xxx

p/s- if anybody is interested i would be happy to whip up a compilation of gospel and spirituals, any takers drop me a line and i'll send you something.

cheers for the advices both. ABN, reason I asked was because I seem to remember you recomending a specific album of their early stuff I think. I nearly went for it at the time, but I hesitated because it seemed a bit pricey. Can remember what it was?

Re. Staple Singers, I think the one mentioned a lot here is 'Great Day', at least I reccomend it, 28 tracks, zero production, sounds like nothing else though. Magical!

'Soul Folk In Action', from 1968 is good too, a great cover of 'Slow Train Coming' by Dyaln. Never heard the original mind.

heres the last five...for all who care

Fred Wesley & the JBs - 'Damn right I am Somebody'
Tweet - 'Southern hummingbird'
Pearl Jam - 'No Code'
Nathaniel Mayer - 'I Just Want To Be Held'
Birth - 'Find'

Got to call for Amadou & Mariam's - 'Dimanche à Bamako' too. They play Ned City imminently. Great album...

Pharoah Sanders- Karma
Dolly Parton- Halos & Horns
great stuff ... as i've unnecessarily been shouting around in other threads, i'm going to see pharoah on thursday, i'm kind of hoping it'll be karma-centric as i only really know that (based on the nine minute creator rather than the full one - i'm having trouble deciding whether i should buy something half an hour long on vinyl, or whether it might be too skippy) and things like 'japan', spiritual blessing etc.

halos and horns - is that the one with the syrupy, extended down from dover on it? any good ..? when i first heard the bargain store by dolly i was tres excited but i've kind of cooled off in not finding much else as good (excluding a few 'hits' like jolene and love is like a butterfly and all that).

the supremes - meet the supremes (This album has convinced me to take up the bass guitar - the bass lines on these songs MAKE the album for me. James Jamerson could quite possibly be god.. lol, not to take away from the great harmonies or anything, hahaha)

roxy music -stranded (first heard this album when I was 10 years old going thru some fucked up shit and listening to Amazona made me feel like Bryan Ferry was my savior-needless to say, it changed my life and thus ecstatic to have it on vinyl)

broadcast - tender buttons (album of the year for me)

cocorosie - noah's ark (just heard it once no judgement yet)

xiu xiu - la foret (very cathartic album)

How do you like Black Mountain? Aside from a couple of songs I rather listen to Sabbath, teehee.

What does BRMC stand for?

I ordered my copy of "How the Blues.." last month after reading all the great reviews. Excited about it!

1. Not too sure really. Some very good moments but not as good as I'd hoped after the reviews.

2. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

3. It's a fantastic collection. You won't be disappointed.

As it turns out, I picked up four cds today... and will likely return for a fifth tomorrow...

Tournament of Hearts - The Constantines
Thumbsucker - OST w/Polyphonic Spree and Elliott Smith
In The Reins - Calexico/Iron and Wine
You Could Have Been So Much Better With - Franz Ferdinand

with tomorrow - Road To Rouen - Supergrass

All recent releases, but what do you want for a mall music store in Eastern Canada...

I looked in vein for the new Broadcast which ranks quite high on my to buy list, but the others were/are all on my list to varying degrees as well... So far Calexico/Iron & Wine and Thumbsucker OST are the only ones I've listened to in full. Both enjoyable enough. The first few tracks from the Cons album sounds pretty good too!

i'm being fantastically lazy, but, given that there's lots of people primals-and-spiritualized-boards-wide that want this boot, is there any chance of starting a tree? if anyone can pass me a copy, without me having to do too much in the way of posting off blanks, then i'll send it to shonn in america and adrian in ireland. and then anyone else who wants in can get it off them, and so on.

Ooh! Soulwax - what's it like? I bought and enjoyed 2ManyDJ's - but never got any further. Belgian aren't they?

Also interested in the Mudhoney/Sonics tribute mentioned up there /\ /\ /\ /\

In other news, I got the BJM Anthology, and like it (I only had '...and this is our music' before).

And someone with broadband sorted out this bootleg of Jay Z/Beatles White Album (called the Grey Album) which is interesting.

Glad to see we're starting to act normally hereabouts, BTW. It must be what it's like to be burgled. We're still at the stepping over broken glass stage at the moment, but it will get better...

i don't know whether it was just the token spiel that goes with remasters and reissues, but hearing can talk about the new re-releases, it sounded like they were really different, like how-they-were-always-meant-to-sound.

are they good?

They are a lot better sounding - especially Tago Mago.

To get the full effect, listen to the older version all the way through and then the remaster all the way through. It sounds great.

Don't know about the last five, but I bought the 4disc box set of 'Joe Meek: Portrait of a Genius' last night. There's 117 tracks ranging from his early days when he was a sound engineer up to some of the final records he wrote and produced. Superb sleeve notes too. A beautiful slice of history. Absolutely magnifcant...

cool beans. i've got a pretty battered copy of tago mago that i'm borrowing, at my house at the mo, that's been on the turntable enough ... i think i'll eventually buy an lp rather than the cds, but it's cool to know they sound good.

those liner notes are the most frustrating thing ever ... as if it's acceptable to talk about some ten minute freak out with jaki and kevin shields on it, and then say (currently unreleased). bad bad bad.

uugghh, awake, i've not yet slept!

mani and the crew didn't leave until after 5am this mornin'. so i'm hurtin at work right now, i smoked like a chimeney last nite and i'm payiong for it now.

so let's see, cut through the haze and remember, i'll give it a shot. only cause it's you sir.

got to hear 8 tracks in total, including a completely different version of
?cars?. nice and mellow. of the 8 tracks 7 of them were great, circa "give out..." and 'screamadelica'. the oddball was a terrible take on the blues. could have been any electric blues band, any. nothing stood out and nothing special. which mani agreed and that's why it's not going on the album.

they also (pay attention northern) have this great trippy psychedelic tune. innes refused to play on it, but it's really good. long and mind bending.

my favourite had to be the track with the mandolin, banjo and hurdy-gurdy on it, sorry that i don't have names for them, mani has made up his own names for the tunes, this one i believe was called "lick my vagina". it is mani afterall.

so overall, it sounds like a band jamming and writing songs, not writing parts and then plugging them into the computer and mashing the fuck out of them. for anybody that likes "give out..." and some of the more soulfull and country style tunes, you'll love the album, anybody wanting more electro-clash will have to just fuck off for now.

ohh by the way, mani wanted to let yous know that he does a internet radio show on mondays between 8-12 on monday nites, i BELIEVE that the address is http://www.revolutiononline.co.uk

i'll have my secretary check my facts and have her repost if thats incorrect, in other words, wait till i go home and find the bit of paper that it's on....eventually.

all in all it was another fantastic time, and the great news is that if all works out right a beautiful noise will be opening for the scream on a few of their west coast dates.

if anybody wants anything more, drop me a pm.

back to avoiding eye contact with everyone in the office.

I DJ'd an 80's night last night. the natives were none too happy that I was lacking any Depeche Mode or Duran Duran.
However they were treated to Imperial(twice) and Gentle Tuesday by Primal Scream. These folks had no idea what hit them but they stayed upstairs the whole night. Actually list of songs I played was hilarious. Everything from The Bunnymen to Magazine to early OMD to Screaming Trees to Spacemen 3 to The Damned and on and on.
