The Babe Rainbow – The Babe Rainbow: I bought this because I really liked the Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest track, but that song is not really representative of the album. I think I like it ….. there’s a mixture of sounds on it. Over all it reminds me of the Monkees, and maybe bits of the Moonflowers. Needs few more listens.

LSD and the Search for God – Heaven is a Place: Don’t know how these guys passed me by. Heard “Without You” recently on youtube, and thought “Wow!”. Good stuff!

Wand – Plum: still not sure about this one. I quite like the first 4-5 tracks, but then I find myself getting bored.

Blatoidea – Pesticide: some good old fashioned punk rock. Love it!

Godspeed You Black Emperor
- Luciferian Towers: really like this, and I’ve bought the previous two albums by them too – great stuff!

Margo Price- Midwest Farmers Daughter LP. This one caught me by surprise.
Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile- Lotta Sea Lice LP. Good LP. Absolute shit pressing.
Allman Brothers- Brothers & Sisters remaster LP. Sublime.
The Triffids- Live Stockholm LP. Actually pretty powerful I must say.
The Woodentops- Live Hypnobeat LP. One word....Frantic!

I haven't posted in this thread for absolutely yonks. I'm not going to go back and list everything I've purchased in the interim (the post would be as long as my arm :D ) but some of the more notable recent ones are:

GYBE- Luciferian Towers. nope, this still isn't doing much for me- despite the superb gig last week. Bosses Hang is great and love the way it builds. but as a whole i'm not finding this album very satisfying.

The Replacements - For Sale. This is a cracking live album. It's pure luck that they happened to record the classic lineup at their peak, the setlist is fantastic and makes me realise how many great songs this band wrote.

Hood- Singles Compiled. Anyone else familiar with this band? I'd seen them mentioned in a couple of places, and took a punt on this as it was only a few quid at Norman Records. It compiles lots of songs (few of which are over 2 minutes long) initially released by various tiny record companies (Earworm amongst others). may take a few more listens to sink in methinks. it ranges from minimalism to discordant guitar stuff.

Lovely isn't it. I bought the vinyl reissue. The original totally passed me by at the time it came out. Always loved Galaxie 500 but never got onboard with their different projects after that.

To break in the new hi-fi, I've been treating myself to tons of new vinyl this last week (again courtesy of the DWP). I've concentrated on getting some of my all-time favourite albums so far, alongside a few that are genuinely new to me. All are brand-new/reissue pressings unless otherwise noted...

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Can - Monster Movie
Chvrches - The Bones Of What You Believe
Eels - The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett
Four Tet - Morning/Evening
Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free (50th Anniversary Reissue w. extra material and a crummy laser-etching of FZ on side 4)
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage Acts II & III (2nd hand, original pressing)
Frank Zappa - Two Originals of the Mothers Of Invention (1975 German pressing of Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh! in one package)
Fripp & Eno - (No Pussyfooting)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Luciferan Towers
Honeyblood - Honeyblood
Jean Luc Ponty - King Kong: Jean Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa (2nd hand, original pressing)
Joanna Newsom - Ys
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge (2nd hand)
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Miles Davis - Dark Magus
Sleep - The Clarity 12"
Slint - Spiderland
Stephen O' Malley - Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs
Stephen O' Malley - Dread Live
Stephen O'Malley - End Ground
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Terry Riley - A Rainbow In Curved Air (2nd hand)
The Orb - U.F.Orb
The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld (2nd hand, 1991 "Special Classical Pressing")
Yes - Close To The Edge (2nd hand)

My best second-hand find was definitely "The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld"; discogs.com tells me it's a special pressing done at a plant specialising in high quality prints of classical music; the cheapest copy (in a similar condition to mine) is currently going for £60, and I paid £20 :)

Also picked up these second hand CDs for bobbins; I'll rip 'em then give them back to charity...

Bjork - Debut
Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish (2xCD Remastered Edition)
Blur - 13 (2xCD Remastered Edition)
British Sea Power - The Decline of British Sea Power
Finley Quaye - Maverick A Strike
Green Day - Dookie!
UNKLE - Psyence Fiction

The vinyl collection is slowly growing (still buying a fair amount of CDs through being as they are cheap as chips). Got a nice batch from Drone Rock Records (cheers Adam!), and bought the new live record from the mighty Heron Oblivion

also The Wrong Car by The Twilight Sad which is a nice EP inbetween albums, the title track really should have made a proper album, it's one of their best.

It's really nice filling some gaps and letting the record collection grow gradually. I do think I need to get cracking on rebuying some of my all times faves as well (similar to what you seem to have done mc)

This is my single favourite curated series of compilations. There are three separate issues, the first looks like this and is over two double LPs:
Image

It is by far and away the best of the series. Deutsche Elektronische Musik (Experimental German Rock And Electronic Musik 1971-83) looks like this
Image

Note the slight change of dates on the covers. Again this is spread over 2 Double LP sets. Quite recently, they released a third volume, which consists of a double LP now over 1970-1983. It looks like this:

Image

All the records are worth chasing down, unless you have the original material. I rate the third volume very highly, not as good as the Volume 1, DLP1, but really excellent all the same. The vinyl pressings are fabulous too.

So glad to finally have the Godpseed albums on vinyl, especially Lift Your Skinny Fists... which could well be one of my favourite LPs ever, however, their Asunder... LP sounds GARGANTUAN on vinyl! Happy to have plugged a few holes in the Spacemen 3/Spectrum/Spiritualized recollection too and also managed to pick up a few wee titbits with some loose change i had in my paypal...

Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Luciferian Towers
Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
Neu! - Neu 75
Spacemen 3 - Live in Europe
Spacemen 3 - Take Me To The Other Side 12"
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Third World Pyramid
Spacemen 3 - Transparent Radiation 7" (Forced Exposure version)
EAR - Delta 6 10"
People's Revolutionary Choir - Elevate My Soul 7"
Sonic Boom - Drone Dream 7"

Bought some fairly interesting new pieces of vinyl recently

Steve Gunn- Ancient Jules 12" (nice couple of unreleased tunes on the B side)
Avocet Revisited- various bands do tunes as a tribute to Bert Jansch's Avocet LP
MC5- Kick Out The Jams. looks lovely this, not only is the vinyl coloured but that sleeve looks soo much better on this scale.

Laz- I'm thinking about collecting Godspeed on vinyl myself. as it's not a huge catalogue it's not too challenging!

Yeah the albums are reasonably readily available. The local FOPP had most of them just before Xmas, so they should be easy enough to obtain. I have them all on CD but have always wanted them on LP.

nice one yeah shouldn't be too difficult. there's not any singles or anything to collect either :)

Constellation seem really good at keeping things in print and in good quality. All copies of F#A# sold still have the crushed penny all these years later.

Do Make Say Think might be another good one to collect actually..

Heh, I've been doing precisely the same thing too - they're easily available, magnificent albums and perfectly suited to the format. What's not to love? I agree with Laz in that "Asunder" is particularly brutal on wax, and I've also found renewed love for "Yanqui U.X.O" (Motherfucker=Redeemer is also another 8ish minutes longer on vinyl). Only F#A#oo and Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada left to get now :)

it's pretty cool when there are small differences with the vinyl version. Allelujah has the drone tracks on a 7" and F#A# is an entirely different mix/recording!
not sure Motherfucker=Redeemer needs to be any longer though

Bobbie Gentry : Touch 'Em With Love (LP)
Utopia: Oops, Wrong Planet! (LP) - Might be a dud, but a friend insisted I buy it when I told him I like Rundgren
Pulp: Different Class (Music On Vinyl 2xLP Reissue)
Pulp: His N Hers (Music On Vinyl 2xLP Reissue) - includes a ton of bonus tracks on the second LP.
Agitation Free: Malesch (LP - reissue)
Janelle Monae: The ArchAndroid (2 x LP) - Some of this is a little too jazz-hands for me, but I like a lot of it.
Felt: Felt (LP reissue) - This is the 1971 album. I love this record.

There’s been some great releases over the last 2-3 months:

Chatham Rise - Meadow Sweet: really like this band. Lovely mellow shoegazey sound. Best track “Surf in G”.
Gulp - All Good Wishes: great 2nd album. The title track is ace!
C89 – Various: following on from C86,87 and 88. 3 CDs full of indie music from 1989. I must admit I was a punk rocker back in 89, so a lot of this stuff is new to me.
Vive La Void - Vive La Void: got this because of the Moon Duo connection. Think it’s great.
Wooden Shjips – V: Love it!

Some older stuff I’ve got recently:

Televise - Songs to sing in A&E: didn’t know about this until someone posted it on Facebook. Group fronted by Simon Scott. Good stuff, with a cover of Mercy Seat. Came out 2 years before Songs in A&E.
Airiel - Molton Young Lovers: Release on vinyl and DL only last year in the states. Then a CD only in Japan – managed to get a cheapish copy from Japan. P&P not too bad either. Lovely!
Mark Peters – Innerland: Record released last year, with CD coming earlier this year. Really like this – great vibe.
Northern Picture Library – Postscript: thought I had everything by NPL, but this compilation had 3-4 tracks not heard before. How good is this version of Something Good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFrcq-sMwDs

Harpers Bizzare - 4 albums: yes, yes, maybe a guilty pleasure, but I love ‘em! We got the best of for Xmas, and now got all four proper albums. Brill!

Stuff looking forward to in next few months

Spiritualized, Anton Newcombe and Tess Parks, True Primitives, Dean Wareham and Chevel Sombre, les big byrd. Plenty to keep me busy!

didn't know about this.. looks like it's got some extra tracks from the same sessions. I kinda need to buy a new version anyway as I still have it as the two separate EPs that were originally released!! :?

kinda wish he would go back to this dark and atmospheric indie sound sometimes..

I've been selling more than I've been buying of late, some pruning and curating needs to happen or else the hoarding mentality just takes over. New on the shelf:

Sonic Youth - Murray Street (updating a cd copy, a late career classic imo, love it)
Bambara - Shadow On Everything (highlight of last year for me)
Amen Dunes - Freedom (same with this one, big fan of the Dunes)
Oh Sees - Clearly Invisible (got it free of charge after the record label cocked up my cancelled order)
Performance - Original Soundtrack (cheap off Discogs, updating an old cd)

agree on this, Sonic Youth entered a real purple patch near the end of their career, Sonic Nurse is also another cracker and Rather Ripped isn't bad either.
the guitars got a bit cleaner and more refined and they hit on a very nice mature period in my opinion.

re: Amen Dunes I really enjoyed the 'Love' album, but the latest one left me a bit cold I have to say :/

Also got to add my love for Murray Street. It features some of my favourite SY songs. Can't really remember Sonic Nurse or Rather Ripped but I loved The Eternal. Caught them live on that tour, where they played all but one tune off it, and they were superb.

If you like Murray Street, I can't see you not liking Sonic Nurse. it's a bit of a long album but it's a continuation of that sound.

I never tried The Eternal, guess I should remedy that..

Good to see Murray Street getting a few thumbs up. I've just finished reading the Kim Gordon bio and she says it's one of her favourite albums of theirs. I read the Goodbye 20th Century book straight after, much preferred that one to hers.

Re: Amen Dunes - Love is his best album for me, bit of a classic. Freedom is a lovely grower, has a real nice feel to it.

I read Kim Gordon's book as well. I was taken aback by how bitter and personal it was.
She is still a badass in my book though.

Agree, she's still dead cool but the tone of her book wasn't the best, plus it was a big chunk of family background and early life to get through until you hit the Sonic Youth era, then it rushed pretty quick through the good bits. Plenty of name dropping. Goodbye 20th Century was much better.

Not bought much recently but, after being tipped off by our very own Sunray, i HAD to buy this...

Julian Cope - Barrowlands

This show is and was one of the maddest and greatest I've ever attended. 3hrs, 2 sets, a shit tonne of magic mushrooms, and a roller coaster trip!

Sunray PM'd me when he saw this being released after he recalled my post describing this as one of my all time fav gigs. I was worried that it would be one of those memories that would have been obscured by the mushrooms but listening to the album just took me right back! Not the full 3hr show, but a selection of tracks from the night. Only track I'm really missing is Upwards at 45 Degrees which was a real highlight for me that night, but I'm just so very grateful for what i do have.

An evening of madness and fun that will be forever etched in my mind!

Sunray, i owe you a pint! 8)

I bought that Cope CD. It is the first CD I've bought in ages. I can't remember the last time I bought an overtly 'psyche' LP. Here is the recent list

Melt Yourself Down: Melt Yourself Down
Melt Yourself Down: Last Evenings on Earth
Melt Yourself Down: Live At The New Empowering Church
Comet Is Coming: Trust In The Lifeforce of Deep Mystery
Comet Is Coming: Channel The Spirits
The Cinematic Orchestra: To Believe
The entire back catalogue for The Delines
Jesu/Sun Kil Moon: Jesu/Sun Kil Moon
Jonathan Wilson: Rare Birds (nearest thing to a psyche LP)
Rema Rema: Fond Reflections

Most of the rest of it has been second hand purchases to fill gaps in my collection for The Orb, Pye Corner Orchestra, Broadcast, Richmond Fontaine etc

some nice picks there Olan, there's definitely more to the world than psych music, I'm also digging Richmond Fontaine a lot these days. unusually, their last album was perhaps their best in my opinion. his songs really paint a picture in my mind.

must say I tried a bit of The Comet Is Coming but they didn't quite do it for me. on the cosmic jazz front I must recommend Szun Waves though, really digging their latest album, there's drums and sax over a bed of analogue synths which almost veers it into electronica at times.

Barrowlands arrived today along with The Modern Antiquarian t-shirt. If the latter is as resilient as my original shirt i'll get a good twenty years out of it minimum :D

I think Saturday might be spent catching up with some Cope purchases (Barrowlands, Antequera, Skellington 3 and Teardrop Explodes Zoology). I listen to the Dope material as I get it but for some reason his other stuff tends to lie about for a while :?

Ha ha! I read this all wrong and was trying to think of a Cardiff band called The Sound Of Young America  Yeah, The Voices are a good band alright, i too have had difficulty tracking down that album. Where'd you get it Runcible?
I've been looking for this post.... I knew it was on here somewhere. I'm putting this album out on vinyl on Drone Rock Records. Just been sent off to the pressing plant and hoping for a mid to late May release. Trying to add pics of the vinyl (1/2 clear and 1/2 black with white splatters) but saying files are too large :(
