How to burn NTSC DVD to PAL for a buddy

Post by dselevan »

Hey guys,
I'm burning a few DVDs for someone in Ireland. I recorded from VHS to NTSC DVD. They use PAL there. I have NERO on Windows, and I also have a Mac. Can someone please let me know a way to burn the DVDs to PAL for him? Also wondering how to copy a VCD. I was thinking about just putting the video files into iDVD and than burning. I'm still left with the problem that my iDVD will burn NTSC DVDs. Any suggestions??

Actually what you need to do is burn a region free DVD.
they should then have no problems at all.

Region coding and PAL/NTSC are two different issues, though.

Any software that you use to make a DVD on a computer will make a region free disc. You have to get discs authored professionally to get the region coding to work. So region codes shouldn't be a problem for anyone sharing discs they've made themselves.

PAL/NTSC is a completely different thing. However, the vast majority of DVD players in PAL regions can play NTSC discs too, so that's not a huge problem either. PAL is better, of course! There is software that will do NTSC/PAL conversion, but the only ones that do a decent job cost money.

I used to worry about this sort of thing for a living...

yes you are right. and i forgot to mention this. (thanks ian)
or just let your computer connect to your TV.

-you can do it in final cut pro if you own that or
final cut express. I even think iMovie will work
then send it out to iDVD...

or

Just make a VCD... Depends if your player will play that.

etc.

If you really really really need to transcode a PAL disc into NTSC, you can transcode it using Toast by following these instructions
