Ipod Question - Lost one now need another

Howdee, I've only gone and lost my commuting buddy, my saviour against the monotony, the daily grind. Absolutely gutted to say the least. I did have the 80GB one from a few years back. So I'll now be needing a new one, whatever my bank balance says. Does anyone have the Ipod Classic 160GB? I've been reading the usual for and againsts online and one of the negatives is the sound level limits set by the EU making it quieter than previous versions. True? If so to what extent?

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

I've got the 160gb classic one, although it's the only ipod I've ever had, so I can't compare the sound level to any other ipods.
Having said that, I've not got any complaints about the volume on it - at its loudest it's still louder than I need it to go. I generally listen to it with the volume about halfway up. I've never had any issues with it, so I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have a 120GB classic and it's too quiet. My previous 40GB model went wayhigher than I would want to play it but the new one is approx half the level on full volume.

I have the 80gb and the volume is limitless, I've never turned it to the highest. Did hear 'bout the EU guidelines. Why not just buy a 160gb thru Apple (US) and have it shipped to Europe? Or if you have a mate in the States, have him order it and he'll ship it to you in Europe to circumvent the issue.

I think the shipping costs + taxes and stuff will make it nearly twice expensive. So its not a good idea. And i fear the the US version may have the same restrictions.
Sadly it seems that there is no working alternative firmware for the new iPods atm. Got myself a ipod nano 5g recently and had real trouble to load music onto it because i run natively linux. Since youre only able to use them together with itunes i was near throwing it out of the window (160€ real crap). Luckily an alpha version for handling them was available - just needed to do a lot of research (and reading the correct part in one manual).

I think that the volume itself is loud enough. But i never listen really loud, so i maybe the wrong person to ask ;) Usually the half volumeter is enough for me when outside.

Thanks for your replies but I've only gone and found the lovely little thing!! I was ringing up lost property, looking online for a new one, crying in my sleep etc etc. This morning at work I'd sat down and got up a few times but then came back and sat down (interesting story huh) and heard a small thud behind me. Looking down I saw my ipod on the floor. It was like I'd layed it like an egg or something but more than likely it'd come out my bag yesterday when I'd been unloading stuff, it'd got stuck in a gap at the back of the chair and sat there all day and night. Weird but wonderful.

As for sound restrictions. Who wants THE MAN telling us how loud we can listen to something. If I want to whack mine up then so be it. Those EU shmucks should keep their beaks out. Luckily my old one has no such problems.

I did notice this when I bought mine...travelling in "rush hour" traffic or whatever but then can you not augment with a decent set of phones?

I have noticed that in silent (or as near as) enviroments the volume doesn't require much travel along the length of the alloted volume bar.

I still find iPod and iTunes a bit shocking to work with; mainly the iTunes software/interface it's lethargic at best and fails to sort in a way that bog standard media players do. This is to the extent that I do not update my library whatsoever anymore. I just play my CD's through VLC media player. However the iPod is useful on trips away and my pleasant (next one approaching soon) record buying daytrips.

Best,

Stuart

Well actually they don't want to tell you how loud you should listen - its because a lot of kids started to ruin their ears because of listening to loud. Well from my experience they don't use earphones anymore but the speaker - so you have to listen to their crap too...
Since there is no rule for some people, everyone has to follow the law here. Since we parents don't seem to be able to look after our kids anymore. It was a good intention but completly off the mark. Like so often in the EU.

Enjoy you little player, keep an eye on it. If its not the player itself its the music backup you have :)

I use those very expensive Bose earpods which seem to be reated as about the best you can get. They are really superb and deliver proper bass. A worthwile investment. My iPod is still too quiet though.

You must be one of those "poor souls" our chums at Brussles are trying to protect! It may be too late for you though.

30 years of loud punk rock has certainly taken it's toll.

i use the i-scream AV1 that i got from hmv for £20. it's not the biggest but keeps the joy of selecting which music to add for a trip- i used to love my portable cd player and walkman for this limitation. i doubt there is ever anywhere that i go that i'd like my whole cd collection with me and as far as i-pod video etc if it is enjoyable to watch a film on something the size of your palm a) why do people need x'' tvs and b) can't be a program/film you love to see

I concur ben, it's verging on the ridiculous really. I can count out of the "whatever GB" of files I have on my iPod about 10 albums or so that I listent to frequently. I haven't updated my library (had a rip session) in ages...really can't be arsed.

I wonder if there is a co-relation between having only 78 mins (CD) or up too 90mins (C90 cassete) that this trend for having everything has taken hold. I admit it's gripped me...almost as soon as I hear a decent album, i get the rest in chrono order and somewhat overlook the original album i bought for any length of time..then it's time to move on again hearing another album. Ahhh!

I long for the days of walkman and taping off the radio (when the radio had a single half-decent channel). Now it's d/l a podcast and well i'll bet there is a lot of chaff in podcasts. I miss the physical!!!

I'm looking into purchasing a Dual Guage projector at the minute. I have a big white wall in my bedroom and the idea of interacting with a piece of technology excites me as well as viewing the saturated images themselves.

Anyway...tangent

Best,

Stuart

I was a late convert to iPods and the fact you could carry all you music with you. I loved tape walkmans and to an extent the tought you had to put into selecting your 90 mins of music. I still fondly remember taking the Circle line each day back in 1992 listening to the Medication b-sides. Sigh.

For the first week of having an iPod I found myself overwhelmed with choice and couldn't decide what to listen too.

But I solved this - oh yes. I have a playlist called 'current' where I pick 90 mins of music and re-live the glory of a chrome c90.

Yes, I know how mad I sound.

remember those chain letter mix tapes... one person starts with one song and mails it to a friend... each new kid (because that's the last time I did this) adds on just one song that was a good segue from the last, and then 20 or so kids/mailings later the last one to receive it has a whole cassette's worth of surprise tunes. Then what... I think the last one copies the entire tape once, sends it back, and each one copies it for the next.
time consuming!
but it was fun

Treated myself to 160 gb Classic on Saturday their, used Xmas and some extra money as the justification/excuse ,never had one before but the 8gb Phillips piece of shit I`ve been using this last 18 months ,well I sat onit and broke the screen although it still works okay btu the sound comparison is like night and day,
it was a choice between this and a nano and an external hard drive and although I could have had a 500gb h/drive and a nano for the same dough I plumped for the Classic ipod, probably hang of and get an external drive later on in the year if Mrs`s M does`nt spend the money first, preserving a bunch of bootlegs and video isn`t high on her priorities strangely enough, sometimes wonder how we ever got together!!!

I went to a ear, nose and thoat doctor about 15 years ago that told me i had lost 20% of my hearing, I would venture a guess and say I saw about 35-50 shows a year in a 10 year stretch from 1986-1996 all w/no earplugs. I still wont wear earplugs. It ruins the whole experience for me. I do remember this revelation at a Queens Of The Stone Age show in a tiny club. I just couldn't understand what the fuss was w/this band. Then I took out my earplugs and quickly realized just how good they were. Now if I go see a band that I dont think are very good I just leave. I'm good at that. The Vines(man, that was about 7 or 8 years ago) I stayed for 3 songs. Same thing w/the Raveonettes. She is nice to look at but the songs lacked any substance. My ears were worth more than the $15. And Black Angels opened and were great. Now I go to less than 5 shows a year.
A few years ago I saw two. But one was The Aliens which made my whole year!
I have no problem w/my iPod. I only using when working out, which sadly is not often, and when traveling, ditto.

Zen vision M all the way.Only drawback imo is the storage size. No lock downs on files...drag and drop.Volume is far louder than iPod. As well as that sound and video are more superior to the iPod.
If its aesthetics and itunes software your after, fair enough.
I have my Zen a good few years now..few formats and firmware upgrades over that time due to freeze ups but it has always bounced back.

I remember about 3 weeks ago, a couple of guys in America tried to sue Apple to have a limit on the sound just like the E.U. and they lost ! It's your stupidity if you want to blow out your eardrums - you can't sue Apple for that. Just like you can't sue McDonald's if you get fat and have diabetes if you go there 5-7 days a week.
