Revolution or Heroin

It's fairly unlikely you'd have made it here without ever having heard of Jason's previous incarnation. So here you go, talk away...

Revolution or Heroin

Post by runcible »

I am trying to find the definitive date and line-up for the gig this boot was recorded at. Various different credits - ULU in 1987, the soundtrack to a video filmed at the Mean Fiddler... It sounds like it's Roscoe and Pete Bain's time (only just - the inclusion of Revolution suggests early '88) but there's a chance it was with Will and John.

Anyone know for sure?

Was under the impression it was Mean Fiddler '87. Sounds a bit too raggedy to me to be any later. Can i truly answer your question though? Er...no.

Mark you know you should ask me when it comes to this sorta stuff!!!! Defo 87 Do have the date written down somewhere but August 87 is the nearest i can give you at the moment. LOVE THIS GIG. Remember the NME running a piece on Spacmen 3 and saying this was one of the cds to avoid - Early version of Revolution and Suicide...

Are you sure Dave? I didn't think Revolution was played that early in 1987. I am racking my brains to find what was played when I saw them supporting the Gaye Bykers. Maybe Revolution was played then but I thought it wasn't. It's the January 1988 set isn't it?

So the line up was Roscoe and Pete Bain? I need concrete info!

Afraid not. That's not correct. That's a gig I was at and it's not the one. I think Dave is right - 1987...

Trust me on this 88 is totally wrong. They had ben playing Revolution and Suicide for all the dates on the Jan/ Feb Euro tour by then and this is prob one of the first outings of the songs. I also have some tapes Oldham and Manchester from Aug 87 were they play Revolutions (Oldham sans vocals) I do not know much in Life but when it comes to Spacemen 3 boots I know my stuff!!

I've read previously on a couple of occasions that its from The Mean Fiddler, Harlesden, Not sure of the year but I'd say 1987.
I have two ULU bootlegs from 1988, November (I was there) and possibly May as mentioned earlier. The later has Sonic having a go back at a heckler which is not on Revolution or Heroin and is totally different.

Though sometimes thought to be "live 22. October 1987 University of London", this is actually the soundtrack from a video of a show at The Mean Fiddler.

Track 6 is an early version of "Suicide"

according to an update on the discogs entry for this album, the person who taped it is a discogs member, so maybe one could ask...? :)

I was in touch with the guy who videoed the gig a few years ago. He was very nice and quite willing to share. But he wasn't quite sure where it was, and it wouldn't be easy to find. I may try again shortly.

It might be the only decent video of Spacemen 3 on home soil...

There is a video boot of the Subterrania gig (in London) but it's unwatchable... and mostly just a blue screen :(

Please keep us updated with any progress Ian, and good luck!
