Sorry about that kids, new computer an all that....
Were you happy with how the S3 re-releases of Playing with Fire and Perfect Prescription turned out?
The UK ones? Yes. The US Taang ones were shoddy, but the UK ones I think were useful adjuncts to the existing releases & a bonus for new-found 'fans'
Do you have any plans to work again with guys like Thomas Koener?
No. though not for any reason. His EAR LP is one of my favourites but tomorrow is a different day ... but who knows ...Thomas Koener is the shit.
Will you ever/can you gain control of your solo record and the first Spectrum records so that you can properly reissue them?
Yes. Spaceage own the rights now and they plan to re-issue them . I believe Highs Lows & Heavenly Blows is to be the first to be re-issued.
What are your feelings about Big City/Bright Lights? Would you ever record something like that in that vein?
Yes. I love a lot of Electro-Euro-stuff like Kraftwerk & Moroder, so I don't rule it out. I'm not sure its very consistent with the S3 output in general, but it was born during 'Recurring' - and that was a messy, unpleasant business.
Have you been following any musical scenes of the past year or so?
No. Not especially . Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips EP & LP's have kept me very satisfied .
Why did EAR's Ring make me feel that I was having a simultaneous heart attack and brain haemorrhage?
Dunno. It is a bit like the aural hallucination that accompanies mainlining cocaine - perhaps that explains it. I'm interested in mood music with EAR in its simplest form. I'm sure different folks would have different impressions from it ... my heaven is many folks hell. and perception of sound varies greatly according to an individuals life conditioning so far .  In some way everything you or I do effects everyone else in a symbiotic system we call LIFE. Very synchrondipitous.
What is your interest in Delia Derbyshire's music?
She is one of the most unrecognised genii of electronic music & a real pioneer. I miss her as a person greatly. Her death has been the biggest loss to my life so far. It brings tears to my eyes just to think of her. She was one of the most beautiful, intelligent, perceptive and infuriating woman I've ever met. I would give most anything to have my time with her again. Most of her best pieces are hidden away in BBC vaults, but there's enough in circulation to give a flavour of her genius & skill with sounds, moods & emotions . In fact if she had ONLY done the Dr.Who theme she would still be worthy of this praise and in reality, the Dr Who theme is a drop in her ocean .
Did you end of collaborating with her before her death?
We were still working up to her untimely death. Unfortunately, she had hermit-ised herself after cruel treatment from an always unfair world and much time was spent coaxing her back after her disappointments thru her life. She also had quite grandiose ideas -which were hard, but not impossible to achieve. she never settled for second best .
Do you think the live experience of Sonic Boom is the best appropriation of your music?
No. I think its one part . live & recording are VERY different and I enjoy both equally for different reasons.
Do you feel that you are more suited for studio work?
No.
What is the story behind the compilation that you compiled called ‘Spacelines'?
I was asked to compile an album of my favourite obscure-ish tracks. It was easy to find great material that fitted the bill.
I love it as an album. The MC5 track wasn't my choice but my choice of 'No Time' by the Saints was considered too risky legally (as the disc is really a bootleg).
Were they songs that changed your life?
And how so?
Yes, most definitely . I'm not sure I could've steered a course thru life without the feeling that I wasn't the only fucked-up child out there. Living an alternative lifestyle (whatever that means) is very hard in a redneck community like Rugby. Success is greeted with jealousy - even on the tiny level I have experienced. Without the wisdom of the Staples Singers, The Velvets , Suicide, the Stooges etc; I wouldn't have had the strength to be myself.
You've collaborated with Kevin Martin, Eddie Prevost and Kevin Shields for your Experimental Audio Research projects - what did each bring to the project and why did you chose those collaborations?
This is self evident . each of these people are musical wonders. They brought magic and mood and interaction of the most sensitive and intuitive kind.
Spectrum has often been called your ‘pop side' - have you yet to make the ideal Sonic Boom pop record.
I'm in the process at the moment, but with my limited time & income it takes some time .
Why the divide between Spectrum and Experimental Audio Research?
It became apparent that the two bands appealed to different people -albeit with some crossover, so it made sense to separate them.
With Experimental Audio Research are you in search of the perfect drone?
No. I'm not sure it exists - there are many perfect drones. I'm merely trying to
capture strong feelings and emotions - pure and simple.
You are now revisiting Spacemen 3 songs in your recent sets - what brought you to this decision?
I never stopped doing S3 material. I like playing it. People wanna hear it. Simple economics I guess . I'm proud of our little role in the music world of the 20th century.
Would you collaborate with Jason Pierce again?
Of course.
What do you think your long lasting contribution to music is?
I have no idea. Speaking my mind? Even when I know it to be disingenuous? doing what I believed in against apparently unsurmountable odds ? - a lot has changed since '83 - and things are thankfully more open now .
What's on your stereo?
The Anthony & the Johnsons ep. Dean gave it me a few weeks back. Gorgeous and stirring music. Other than that ? Sonic Souvenirs by Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham.

.
Of course everyone appears a redneck when your the landed gentry.
Pete Kember has never been flush with money. Otherwise he wouldn't have offloaded just about every seriously collectable Spacemen 3 item (one off vinyl colours, his hand-written note books for albums) to Runcible Records in the 90's. How do you think I amassed such a ludicrous collection of stuff?
Having said that I've rarely known someone be so generous with bits and pieces to fans. Anyone who drives from Rugby to London when a gig is cancelled, sits outside the venue taking everyone's name and address who turned up and then sends them a free record and hand-written apology has his audience's best interest at heart as far as I'm concerned. Doesn't sound like the 'landed gentry' to me.

I take it Sonic's comments were a little close to the bone?
Mr Anonymous, you just confirmed exactly what Sonic said.

pete
pete's a great guy, he was saying the compilation is obviously 'risky' market wise, hence its hard to get pressed up etc without risking a slap on the wrist or worse... i pointed out it was clapton on the bluesbreakers 'witchdoctor' track and he was chuffed, and said he'd love to make another comp in the future...
anyone know if he finished his guitar fx he was building? (for those who dont know it was a hybrid of the fx pedals/vox fx he used for the S3 'sound' all in one unit... dont know if he got past prototype stage but i'd love to get one...)

Hello,
I went to a state school (Comprehensive), and the Conservative Party were in Government for at least half of my life. In spite of these apparent disadvantages, I can string a sentence together, spell words, and generally participate society.
You, on the other hand (whoever you are), are what is called THICK. Make all the excuses you want; if you'd been rich, gone to private school, lived in a socialist utopia, you'd still be what you are now. Which is THICK.
All the best,
S

...and you say something interesting at all and we might take notice. I don't think you're doing yourself any favours whatsoever (except in your own eyes). And I don't see Jason saying a great deal to anyone - he hasn't for years.Taramis wrote:

I have no idea what you are trying to drive towards here. Sonic Boom has never tried to show political allegiance to any party as far as I am aware. Revolution was released when the Tories were in power if you remember yet you are keen to link him to their cause.
Simply shouting OUTRAGE kind of makes you look like the big bad wolf who is huffing and puffing and achieving bugger all.
I somehow doubt endless 'guest' posts will command any kind of respect on a forum of this kind. Hasn't so far has it?

Are you really trying to tell everyone Revolution was a Socalist call to arms? Have I got it wrong again? I really assumed it was about injecting smack.
but I am THICK!
Pete a nice guy? Errrrrrr have you read that book? Not all the witnesses can be wrong or lied.
Or are we going to have spz style justice here. We believe what we choose to believe. They look guilty therefore execute them. Very Bushian.
Girlfriend/Boyfriend Male?Female? I forget you Spz boys don't get out much.
The middle paragraph in the above rant shows you up for the hypocrite you undoubtedly are. You believe what you want to, and have made a conclusion as a result of said book - Pete looks guilty so execute him.Taramis wrote:

Everyone I know who knows Jason says he's a nice guy. But anyone who treats his band members the way Jason treated Mooney, Reece and Cook seems to fall into the same category you are determined to place Pete in.
Is it just me or does Taramis come across as being merely very silly rather than anything terribly serious?
