Record Store Day - Highs Lows and Heavenly Blows reissue

Not been fussed by Record Store day in recent years, but Highs, Lows and Heavenly Blows gets a reissue this year...

"While RSD hasn't announced the list of releases yet, I can report that Seattle-based Medical Records will be reissuing Spectrum's Highs, Lows & Heavenly Blows for the occasion. A 1994 album by former Spacemen 3 guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Highs is a sublimely dreamy bliss-scape of analog synths and crystalline guitar meditations. The LP hasn't been available on wax since its original issue on Silvertone Records 24 years ago. Even the CD version of it sells for $55-$70, and a Hong Kong dealer on Discogs is peddling the vinyl for $330, so this Medical reissue will be a godsend for fans of the brilliant Spacemen 3 diaspora. Perhaps this thread shoud've been titled "Highs, Lows & Heavenly Blows Vinyl Reissue". Thought there would've been some kind of response to the news.

Great news. Had the vinyl, sold it, and only have CD now. Would love to get this on vinyl again.

You might be right Sunray, I have edited the title. Lets see if anyone else is interested.

I'm certainly looking forward to a copy on vinyl, but to be fair I fucked if I'm queuing for 3 hours to get it.

 Nice one Clewsr.

Bought it when it came out. Unfortunately it had a scratch and a replacement was impossible to find even a week later! So, yeah, I would be tempted to buy another copy. As long as the price was right.

I'm likely in for a copy.

When my daughter was pretty young, she would sometimes pull CDs from my shelves to listen to.

Highs, Lows was one she seemed to favor!

Is this getting a UK RSD release? It is madness that the Spectrum back catalogue is pretty much unavailable now, particularly on LP. I can't see how Sonic would to sell 3-500 copies of each LP per year in the UK, and more if he got sorted and toured properly. I guess you could say the same for Spiritualized's back catalogue too though.

Thank God for all those excellent Spacemen 3 re-re-releases on Spaceage

Shouldn`this be in the Spacemen section? Bought said album when it came out- on cd, still have it, its enough for me- and found it a bit twee, little interest in it now to be honest no matter how hard it is to get,

Moved this as it is indeed more Spacemen 3 related.

As far as interest goes I'd say this is major news as this album is exceptionally hard to find. Even at the time of release, when Pete toured to promote the album it was already deleted! The lack of support from Silvertone was shameful. Simply put the label didn't give a shit.

Had the CD, it got left in the US when I moved back to the UK, something that has been a source of regret since.

Would definitely be in for the vinyl. Hope it gets a UK release.

I have held off on the Plain reissue - wonder what the source audio will be for the coloured reissue?

See the above link. If Adasam are involved, it's Palmer. Sadly, Jason doesn’t own the FUI rights, Sony do. The link in the other thread shows Adasam (Palmer company) licensing the rights from Sony. So, he hasn't directly got his teeth in like with SP3, but Sony clearly happy to give someone else a cut....

Having checked Will's social media, it sounds like the record company may be legit and wanting to put out a good product, but obviously they have no control over how royalties are paid (or not paid) due to dodgy dealings of past management. do they just license the record from the appropriate rights holders?

Gerald Palmer's ownership of the rights may technically be legal but that doesn't make the amount of royalties he's paying fair. could it be the classic situation where a manager took advantage of young, idealistic and naive rock stars? we've been hearing about this since the 60s!

I saw the same thing. I'm pretty curious what the aftermarket price will be, as I'm assuming I will not score one on RSD. I mean, this album is still way under the radar even if there are a handful of people clamoring for the reissue.

He managed Spiritualized in the early days as well.

Don't know how he got his mitts on any rights to any of their music though.

Its on Glass Records Redux, Dave Barker`s label I believe, not sure it is anything to do with Palmer, I did see a couple of pictures posted on twitter over the Xmas period of Barker and Sonic in some pub, had a quick look there but can`t seem to find them again, seemed quite cheery together.

See the reverse of this version, albeit the CD. It's on Glass, but distributed by Adasam. Adasam is Palmer's company.

I got my copy of HL&HB just the other day. Score it off Discogs for $26 (listed by Medical Records). It's a little warped, but so far it playing just fine and sounds good. My buddy got one and he said his is also warped. Fucking pressing plants are so hit or miss these days, but I guess what matters is that it sounds good.

Have just noticed Medical Records have announced an 180 g black vinyl (2nd edition) on their bandcamp page.
Has anyone got any links to any UK shops stocking these yet? £18.82 for shipping to the UK seems a bit steep atm.
A quick check of Norman , Rough Trade etc coming up blank

I nearly jumped on one of these, then saw that postage was more than the cost of the vinyl. :(

Trying to justify to myself at the moment that combined cost only comes to around £37. The same as the box set of the new record which I happily paid. Think I'll sit on it for a week to see if it's gonna be sold UK side

I know what you mean. If it had been advertised as £30 and then £5 postage I would probably have bought a copy.

Daft innit!

I've emailed Troy at Medical Records about a UK/ European release of Highs Lows . He answered they should be available and to " have the record store ask SRD" A quick Google of SRD brings up Southern Record Distribution- with a co.uk website address. Guessing its a Uk based company. No way of contacting them directly though to see what outlets will stock them.

I emailed Medical Records to see if they would wholesale them to me. Problem is it does cost $23(with my USPS discount) to ship one LP to the UK. That doesn't include the mailer and inserts either.
I was hoping to see if I could help you guys out. Perhaps sending multiple copies to one person in the UK would be more cost effective.

SRD do our (The Lucid Dream) distribution, and are brilliant.
They’re a proper setup so it means the record in that case will be in all the major stores - ie Piccadilly, Norman. They basically will be the people responsible for distributing to stores.
Imagine pre-orders will follow soon then.

Thanks Noddy
Forgot Picadilly Records. They have them up for pre sale with expected release 20th July. £31.99 +shipping !!
Bit of a ramp in price from Medicals bandcamp at £18.97....but a small saving none the less I suppose.
Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet on this

Stop Press.... Available at Norman and Rough Trade also , with Norman coming in cheaper at £30.99

Norman is free p&p over £50. Add the Spz white vinyl, and a polythene record sleeve and you're sorted!

Just received an email from Sound of Vinyl about the red "Highs, Lows..." pressing: £18.99 to pre-order plus £3.95 P&P in the UK. Ordered straight away, plus a clearance sale copy of Brian Eno's "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) half-speed master for £10.99 as well. Bargain :)

I'd originally ordered "Highs, Lows..." at £30.99 from Norman along with the new Spz album, but I cancelled the Spectrum LP and reordered from Sound of Vinyl. Not only was it £12 cheaper, I'll receive it much earlier (on release instead of it coming in September with "And Nothing Hurt").

Incidentally, last month I got a brilliant haul from the Sound of Vinyl clearance sale:

Brian Eno - Before and After Science LP (£9.99)
Eels - Shootenanny! LP (£9.99)
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch! LP + T-shirt box-set (£9.99)
R.E.M. - Lifes Rich Pageant LP (£8.99)
Portishead - Portishead 2xLP (£6.00)
Portishead - Third 2xLP (£6.00)
The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole 2xLP (£6.00)

Bargains galore :)

According to the Norman records site the Music on Vinyl is not only much cheaper but is on transparent red vinyl? Is that right? Thought it would be the other way round

I ordered from Sound On Vinyl and its the red vinyl copy too. Not sure if they are just the shopfront of Music On Vinyl, but it was considerably less than the price of the 2nd pressing (black vinyl) from Medical Records.

is it me or is that strange? wouldn't the red vinyl usually be the more expensive option?

I assumed the Medical Records version is being imported (hence the price). The RSD version was an import and was the reason it was just under £40 back then. I think the Music On Vinyl version is a UK/EU release so might explain the difference in price.

I really hope its a nice pressing. Been waiting so long to be able to pick this up again and, although its not an original copy, it will be lovely to drop the needle on it again :D

My Spectrum LP from Sound of Vinyl has arrived. Small black smears spoil the translucent red slightly, but nothing drastic. LP (180g) is a little warped, but plays fine. No surface noise whatsoever on side A, and one or two clicks on side B. I think it sounds just grand, personally, and compared to some "new" vinyl I've bought this last year, sounds positively audiophile ;)

Feel a bit of self loathing for paying £30 For the Medical Records Orange vinyl on RSD now. Suppose it's decent my local shop got the money though like. They're a nice bunch and got it in specially for me, and I have played it a lot.

It was $34 at the shop I got mine at on RSD. So 30 quid seems like a deal as it had to be shipped and duty was paid.
Plus you have the added bonus of playing it loads and liking the shop you bought it from.
Sounds like a great deal all the way around.
