Yeah, I couldn't resist this in the end. I'm very pleased with it - whether through remastering or a really good vinyl pressing, my copy sounds utterly fantastic. "An Evening..." fades out at the end of side A and fades back in for side B, which is much better than abrupt cuts & restarts. Will's note is interesting too, and it isn't an excerpt from his book. It doesn't play from the inside out, which I believe some older copies did?

Those two posts have disappeared.

Shame those posts have now gone. Anyone got a rough idea what they pertinent points were?

Pete Bain seems prone to airing grievances, though they may be thoroughly justified. I wasn't entirely convinced of his complaints about not getting paid for artwork and a recording session he funded. Artwork is not covered by regular mechanical royalties (to the best of my knowledge). Any expectation of payment really should have been addressed when he originally provided such.

I've a lot of sympathy if someone like Gerald Palmer is making money from artwork he was responsible for, as I'd be very pissed off about that kind of thing. However I'm not sure one can directly conflate that issue with the composition and performance dispute, relating to Gerald Palmer and the Spacemen 3 catalogue - as there is a firm legal structure governing the latter, with established processes designed to equitably distribute monies to all relevant parties.

I remember reading Pete talking about why he came off as so bitter in Erik Morse's book, due to some unfortunate stuff he was going through at the time. He seemed to have got over it, as I recall. I can't find my copy anywhere, following a large scale moving operation last year - very frustrating!

I skimmed through them last night, and basically Pete was saying he'd tried to contact the label to find out how/why etc they were doing these releases and he'd had no response.

Also there'd been several other reissues over the years that had paid no royalties to those involved in actually making the music.

I wonder if Gerald Palmer used his legal muscle man to threaten Pete, causing him to take them down?

Very odd. I clicked on both those links last night and read both posts. The second one being more aggressive.
This leads me to believe someone in GP's camp or GP himself reads this message board.
Take that for what it is worth.

This bugs me, and i think Mojo makes a good point.

In simple terms, there must be two possible scenarios here...

1. Spacemen 3 did enter into some sort of legal binding contract back in the day (paper work?/signed document?) which, in hindsight, was not a good deal for them. I think i recall reading about them being provided with some decent gear (the Vox teardrop, etc) in return. Either way, its a crap deal and they are now being shafted heavily over it and their back catalogue is (legally) being milked to death and they don't have much they can do about it... surely a case of just accepting things and moving on?

2. There was never a legally binding deal and Gerald Palmer has taken advantage of the situation (like he did with The Enid) and is ripping the utter pish out of the band, the music and the artwork that is synonymous with the band and their legacy. If so, then there should be clear legal steps that can be taken to stop this from happening... why is this not being done?

I don't imagine GP has an wall of lawyers behind him like what Sony or any of the big majors may have at their disposal, so whats stopping any legal steps being taken?

Or is this just a case of sour grapes on Pete's side?

I totally agree that the band have been fleeced year after year and its THEY who should be reaping the rewards but i'm struggling to understand why either side can't take the necessary steps to either produce a contract of some kind to prove that GP can continue to do what he is doing or the band take the necessary steps to deal with this in the courts. Seems like its easier to just moan about things...

He does / has read this forum, and has posted on here in the past, fairly disparagingly

from what I gather Laz- I think it's a case of #1. just because something is legal doesn't make it morally right however (e.g. tax evasion etc) maybe just another case of naïve young rockers being taken advantage of.
that said some also seem to be implying that no royalties are being paid at all? which obviously wouldn't be right in the slightest

Does anyone know what the quality of the Superior Viaduct pressings is like in comparison to the Spaceage reissues?

They seem to garner generally favourable reviews on Discogs with some people taking the opposite view. Looking to pick up a couple as presents but if there is a marked difference in quality i'd go for SV (this is purely monetary based and nowt to do with the Palmer saga).
I picked up the Fire reissues of SOC and PP for Christmas gifts and i noticed that they are considerably cheaper than SV or Spaceage for some reason :?
