New Biography
It was released a month or so ago here in the states.
It's Spacemen 3 & the Birth of Spiritualized by Erik Morse.
I just finished it and I must say it is quite brilliant. It's a shame that Jason wasn't interviewed for it though.

thanks for that...
I totally agree with you on both counts although I'll admit I'm sorta biased...
please pass the word along and get all your friends to buy the book--I'm broke here trying to work on a new manuscript...
on second thought, though, any brilliance it might have simulated was simply reflected/inspired by the music of Mr. Barrett, Mr. Drake, and Raymond Roussel's obscure novel 'Locus Solus' (I think if I repeat this phrase enough maybe one day my name will be mentioned in the same sentence as theirs...) so if you find a copy of the latter give it a read--it's one of the most fantastic bits of literature I've ever come across...
take care

Erik, did you ever come in contact with Jason directly?
It is still a fantastic read, yet - although you added a few of Jason's words from past interviews - I feel it lacks authority on some levels, which is sad because I really enjoyed this book.
PS: I love how the Spiritualized forums are "star-studded". pk, erik morse, etc...haha

Thanks for the heads up on the book. I was waiting for the domestic release and was able to get a copy on Amazon today.
Don't blame Jason for not doing the interviews. Been over 10+ yrs. and have been chronicled and interviewed to death in numerous magazines about the SP3 days. Just doesn't want to get into a confrontation about conflicting issues, incidents, quotes, etc. He just wants to move on ...

spacemanrich,
dig that Nietzsche epigram, Birth of Tragedy in the Spirit of Music?
i'm partial to this one from Georges Bataille...
"Music, states of happiness, mythology, faces belaboured by time, certain twilights and certain places try to tell us something, or have said something we should not have missed, or are about to say something, this imminence of a revelation which does not occur is, perhaps, the aesthetic phenomenon."
toomilk,
yeah, i did meet Jason several times in NY--very nice guy--
veiko,
i've been a bit of a francophile since college, Bataille, Guyotat, Artaud, Roussel, Genet, Foucault, and as i understood it, rock n roll was just a harmonic production of this literary POV--i didn't see the difference between these two 'undergrounds'--so Naked Lunch or Gravity's Rainbow or White Noise were such perfect pieces of 'rock' writing--why not give it a whirl? so I've got over three hundred pages of fiction at the moment, with a little rock 'n roll, a little scatalogia, a little psychogenic fugue, figured why not take a crack at the novel...

Received the book the other day and I'm halfway thru with it - great read ! I like the accompanying photos and doodlings by the Spacemen in the early years. I like the Sonic quote, " if your going to play with fire, you've got to make sure to wear asbestos gloves. " Well done, Erik !

far more admirable that pete Bain's bitter burblings imo.
i got sick of refuting him....................................he's turned out to be quite a prolific liar.

Re: New Biography
In the copzone, someone is selling their copy for upwards of 50 GBP, which I immediately thought of as being too high. But just taking a look at the prices on amazon (us) and half.com, they are really really high.
Lowest on amazon is $79: http://www.amazon.com/Spacemen-Birth-Sp ... 757&sr=1-1
Lowest on half is $183: http://product.half.ebay.com/Spacemen-3 ... rZ46876138
was it really published in that limited of a run? maybe erik morse (who posted in this thread...see above) can give us an idea of how many were published.
Very interesting to see how much these are going for now. I remember just randomly seeing it in a bookshop's music section new for $20...probably should have bought 5 of them!

Blimey!
I've got a spare unread, mint copy on my bookshelf.
Think I'd better put it somewhere safe!

That does sound interesting. ^^natty wrote:Blimey!

I didn't even know the copies of the book were that cheap in the very beginning. Well, I guess I'm a bit late now.
W: What are we supposed to do with that?
M: Eat it.
W: Eat it? Fucker’s alive.
M: Yeah, you’ve got to kill it.
W: Me? I’m the firelighter and fuel collector.

Re: New Biography
you can grab one for you Kindle for 10 bucks. blahhh
Re: New Biography
I tend to find resellers on Amazon will price high.
I picked up a copy on Ebay earlier this year for under £20 (can't remember exact figure). Retail price on back cover is £14.95 and I seem to remember I got it for less than that.

Re: New Biography
Nine years later, and I've yet to read this.
I can't buy it at what they're asking these days.. I don't want to own it anyway, I just wanna read it.
It's only available at one library in my state (two hours drive) for in-library use only and un-lendable to my local library.
So:
Would any of you kind folk stateside be willing to loan me your copy?
I will take good care of it..
I'll pay all S&H for book rate or whatever works for you.
yes, you'd have to be willing to package it up, send it off, worry about it & etc.
But! I'll return it as promptly as possible, and I promise I won't lose it, spill coffee on it, dog-ear the pages, break the binding, or mark especially interesting passages with a neon yellow highlighter. Promise.
Thanks very much.

Re: New Biography
There's a copy at the library here at Harvard (lol) I am going home for the winter break in a day or two, but I can have it for you afterwards if you are going to be in Boston soon.
Re: New Biography
heya,
yah, that is funny!
Thanks, that's awfully nice.
Thing is, I dunno when I'll be there next (btw, the reference copy I mentioned is at Copley BPL)
hmm.. well, good to know, and if I do end up taking a trip out there for a few days this spring maybe, I'll check in with you about it.
Meanwhile, if anyone is willing to do the mail thing, let me know. That way I can read it in the comfort of my own home
Great show yesterday, by the way, Hofstadter, which reminds me maybe I'll tune in again now.
Laurie Spiegel is a wonderful new discovery for me.
Thanks and have a nice vacation.

Re: New Biography
I have a copy. PM me and maybe we can sort something out!
Re: New Biography
thanks.. am PM'ing you.
Re: New Biography
I picked up a copy of this a few weeks ago for around £30, I had stopped looking for it and then stumbled upon one on eBay and couldn't resist. I've read the first few chapters but it hasn't really grabbed my attention yet. Hopefully it's going to get better.
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

Re: New Biography
It's a great, worthwhile book. The writing can be pretentious, especially with the frame/conceit of the "dreamweapon" for the narrative, but tons of information I'd never heard before. Maybe Robert Caro will take on the Spacemen when he's done with Lyndon Johnson.

Re: New Biography
Anyone want my copy for £300?
Who would've thought the book would have been so sought after years later.
