Spectrum (ex Spacemen 3)/St Deluxe/Glasgow/Stereo/13th Dec

It's fairly unlikely you'd have made it here without ever having heard of Jason's previous incarnation. So here you go, talk away...

Some people have fixed ideas on perfection for sound.

You ever go to a Frank Zappa gig? He used to stop and berate band members for not getting it quite right.

Isn't that what the soundcheck is for?

Sure, but do you think a place is going to sound the same empty as when it is full of people?

I've mentioned before that I saw Spiritualized at The Warehouse in Leeds and there was a gap of 45 minutes between 2 of the tracks. Technical difficulties can strike anyone at any time. Another time I saw Bardo Pond play at ULU as part of the Domino birthday bash and to my horror they started fucking about with their amps using screwdrivers - I think I even saw a soldering iron at one point. And this before they even played a note. They lost 10 minutes of their set because of sound problems.

Possibly not, but personally I find it rather endearing that after all this time, he still cant tune a guitar.

I agree completely, I saw Thirston Moore have awful trouble with an amp at the start of a solo gig earlier this year and didn't want him to proceed till he was happy with the sound himself.

Same with Sonic supporting MBV in Manchester in June.

It's just that it seems to take up more of his short sets than it should really. Also I'd love to see him do more of his solo stuff.

When Spectrum played at the Legion in Shoreditch back in the summer this year, I thought the problems appeared to be mainly with the keyboards. This wasn’t as frustrating as it could have been due to Sonic’s banter which was self deprecating and genuinely funny. In one instance he apologized for the sound checking in between songs saying something along the lines of it was due to the eighties equipment being used by an eighties has-been!

Worst example of technical problems at a gig that I can recall was at the Bournemouth opera house last summer for the only UK club appearance by Sly & The Family Stone. Sly was late coming on stage (what’s new?) because as he quite rightly said, the sound just wasn’t good enough. The crowd were getting really restless after watching about five roadies (employed by the venue) just stare at an amp for an hour scratching their heads, arses and bollocks. Afterwards the venue said it was the band’s fault, and offered to give refunds but this would mean Sly not getting paid. As disappointing as it was, I still managed to achieve something which I thought would never happen, that is being in the same room as one of my all time heroes Sly Stone.

Worst tuning experience I ever encountered was a My Bloody Valentine gig in Baltimore. I mainly went because Mercury Rev(with Mr Baker) were opening and I had never seen them.
The club, Hammerjacks, absolutely was the biggest shithole i'd ever been to. They were trying to get females to be contestants for a wet t shirt contest between bands(which sort of fell on deaf ears with that crowd). Then between Buffalo Tom and My Bloody Valentine MBV(mainly Kevin) took nearly an hour to tune. When MBV came on you couldn't even tell what songs they were playing. It was the worst sound I ever heard at a gig. I lasted about 20 minutes into MBV's set and just left.

After the sound check for this gig Sonic actually said that was one of the best soundchecks he's ever had, and that was a slight worry as it's always a bad thing when that happens..

I sometimes find a bad practice before a gig means it's gonna be a great performance on the night!
