taang test press on ebay???

It's fairly unlikely you'd have made it here without ever having heard of Jason's previous incarnation. So here you go, talk away...

i dont trust those guys as far as I could throw them.
It looks like Taang 96 was the singles comp. So it may be all three singles on seperate test pressings. Looks like they are trying to cash in big time on their record collection.

However reliable or otherwise this seller is, I don't see why this can't be legit. Taang only issued The Singles on CD, but they were planning a vinyl release of three 11"s. I emailed Taang in 1999 for Spacemen info, and they told me:

>CD ONLY EXCEPT FOR PLAYING WITH FIRE ON CASS & DOUBLE 10 IN ALSO
SINGLES LP TRIPLE 11IN TEST PRESS ONLY 10 COPIES DIFF VERS OF ROLLERCOASTER

By "DIFF VERS" of Rollercoaster, I assume they mean the whole thing, not the CD version with a few minutes chopped out.

Love,

Ian

I know this triple thing was planned but I didn't know they'd got as far as pressing anything.

The whole Taang! Spacemen thing is full of bad memories for people close to it. Pete K said Curtis of Taang! broke all the terms of the license by cutting out a few minutes in the middle of Rollercoaster and he was absolutely furious. I won't forget his reaction when he found out about that and you can't blame him. Editing a song to squeeze more on the CD is pretty poor. That's just the tip of the iceberg too.

My limited experience w/him as a wholesaler was even bad. We only ordered from them to get the Spacemen stuff. We ordered a few t shirts, one of which had obviously been worn and not washed w/hairs inside the shirt. Talk about taking the shirt off your back!

They've had these test pressings forever (and I'm assuming there are more than 10). They tried to sell me it two years ago. They also had test pressings of the Playing With Fire double 10", which they tried selling me for $100. If you're ever in San Diego, you should stop by their store and check it out. They will probably offer it for less than that ebay price.

It is "legit", but it is Taang...meaning the sound isn't good and the quality of the pressing is questionable. It all depends on what your definition of having a "complete collection" is and if you consider this part of it.

Sadly I am in that category. I'd really like that test press as that's really all I look for these days as I bought everything else at the time. Touch pricey for me though...

Any more good stories you can tell?

I bet Pete was pissed. I would be too. Horrible sound, artwork, everything. I went to the Taang shop in LA once and it was kind of a dump. Nothing special at all.

Not really. There were several things that happened but that's Pete's business really. I know the relationship ended badly.

I have to hold my hand up and say I sold Curtis of Taang! most of the albums he used for the artwork on those releases. He spent several hundred quid with Runcible after Pete directed him to me so I did quite well out of it, but I didn't know what was going to happen later!

The really sad part is that they did pretty well with their SOC release; that was good. Let's just not talk about what they did to PP though... brrrrrrr.
