Amazing albums. I had these as 2-for-1 CDs with other albums, great stuff here. A quick scan on Amazon shows fairly recent 9 disc/album box-sets for around £20-30, and a box-set of 46 albums for £75!

What's this like, if you've had a chance to listen?

I burned some birthday vouchers on the following:

Suede - Dog Man Star [remaster/repress double vinyl]
Azealia Banks - 1991 EP [CD]
Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle [vinyl]
Jack Nitzsche - Three Piece Suite - The Reprise Recordings 1971-1974 [mp3 - the original, limited Rhino Handmade CD edition is going for insane costs now.]

Was so pleased to the Jack Nitzsche set had appeared in a considerably more affordable mp3 version.
Even on first listen, a completely awesome set of recordings: the entire St Giles' Cripplegate modern classical album that Nitzsche recorded in London with the LSO (around the time of doing the arrangements for stuff like 'A Man Need A Maid' from Harvest ); incredibly an entire unreleased solo album from 1973, as well as some demos too. Amazing music, I've been after this one for some time...

Woah! That's pretty sweet :) I paid a fiver each for the downloads from Boomkat. ITT and ODOO were 69p each from Amazon! These are my first Fela Kuti albums and they're absolutely wonderful - I'm looking forward to collecting his discography :)

Latest purchases:

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Ennnio Morricone - The Music of Ennio Morricone
Sora Shima - You Are Surrounded (thanks, olan!)

I picked up a handful of albums yesterday but, the best one to list here is an original Reprise issue (stereo) of West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - "Vol.2" for $35.

Not overly rare...I certainly stumble on them from time to time but I often see this record at least $10-15 higher than this. The record itself is in decent shape, some surface scuffs that you can't hear when playing, jacket has typical ring wear and a name written on it in ballpoint pen (also typical of records this age).

I think "Child's Guide" is the rarest/most expensive of the first three WCPAEB LP's. I'm still searching for an affordable copy of it. I have a Sundazed reissue, which is legit and looks and sounds great but not quite the same....

Good man, that would be ace! Cheers...
I think I heard one track of theirs on a Mojo comp that stood out from a lot of the other, reductive, pastiche stuff on there.

Snowbird: Moon/Luna on double LP. Nice package includes the album (Moon) on white vinyl, a remix of the album (Luna) on black vinyl and also both on CD. Pretty good value for £20.

First music I have bought featuring Simon Raymonde of the Cocteaus since the last Cocteaus LP. I believe it might be just about the first music he has recorded since. I was a huge fan of what the Cocteaus did up until 'The Moon and the Melodies'. After that, nothing much they released did anyhing for me. Vocals from Stephanie Dosen are very much in the realm of Liz Fraser. Album also features input from bits of Radiohead (Selway and O'Brien), Midlake (Pulido and Smith), Paul Gregory from Lanterns on the Lake and others. Very nice for a quiet friday afternoon listen at work.

Ah! I didn't realize this was back catalog stuff. I went into the bandcamp and have most/all of these tracks on various cd-r's from trader days. Might be cool though to have them assembled on a double LP.

Sorry, I thought you knew it was a compilation. I also had much/all of the material on CDR or various tapes. It is nice to have on vinyl, is very reasonably priced, and is a nice artifact. I haven't compared the LP or downloads to the CDRs I have though. However, I suspect that this release will be something of an upgrade. Giving the band a few $$ is also a good thing of course 8) . I am pleased enough with it to highly recommend it, which I wouldn't usually do for a compilation LP.

Only a couple of things in recent times, but the quality level is outstanding!

Like mc above, Miles Davis - At The Fillmore 1970: The Bootleg Series Vol. 3

At last, the full set of Fillmore East shows that were (pretty severely) edited to form the semi-classic Live at Fillmore East album. Note this is a few months on from the band and set on the Fillmore East, March 7 1970: It's About That Time album, which was pretty far out stuff.

Anyway this is as good as live music got in 1970 - the band here are on incredible form and the sound quality is just superb. Only gotten to Disc 3 so far and despite a similar tracklist for each disc/gig, the music varies so much from take to take - truly they never played the same song the same way twice. Really nice package for the price too. The only downer is that the bonus tracks from contemporary Fillmore West gigs are pretty poor quality. Churlish to complain though as they have filled these discs, so fair enough.

Just hope the next instalment digs deep into the On The Corner period, like the live band featured on In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall, NYC album.

Just arrived, which I'm very excited about: the latest from Pharoahe Monch: PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

He's one of those artists that never let me down, magic he has a new record out already, only really recently properly digested his last album....

[some recordings came via lilmoxie.com]

These last few months have been TRULY FANTASTIC for me when it comes to obtaining music (and ephemera). I have not posted here in what seems ages, and I won't have all the info available in front of me to be as detailed as I usually try to be. Mainly, I have been focusing on very "new" bands and releases; Independent releases, and I've also continued to obtain as many of my "favorite bands and offshoots, solo LPs and singles" still [sealed]. I have focused for the last year on [sealed] OST LPs, and pieces that I was unaware of, of which there are still, (nearly infinitely) many more!

One of the OST [sealed], was the 1967 LP from the film "Bedazzled", which is a very different film than the more recent remake of the same title. I included an excerpt of the LP Cover (below) on London Records.
The 1967 film stars the comedy team of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore; w/ Peter Cook playing Satan. I like 2 tracks that are funny in the way they poke fun at the music industry and the fickle nature of the buying public. After Moores' character wishes to be "a rockstar" and delivers yet another "love me" type of song (on a TV Show); Peter Cook (Satan), makes a very antithetical responsive in song, "I don't Love you, I don't need you" et cetera, and you can see the fans switch on and off with this manipulation. There are some brilliant pieces out there that have fun with BOTH the industry and the public, this one just happens to do so with a lot of humor and multiple entendre'.

Peter Cook was BRILLIANT as "Mr. Blint - and other characters" on the 3-LP set of "Consequences"; 1977, Mercury 017 USA; a recording by Lol Creme and Kevin Godley, made after they had left "10 CC".

I also found a surprising number of WONDERFUL Japanese Samplers that I have never seen before, and a real "cache'" of colored waxes that had been stored away, very neatly fom 1966 - 1970, mainly German, all still [sealed].

One last "type" to be obtained were [sealed] or new examples on Fontana, Odeon, Elektra, Tower, Deutch Gramaphone, Capitol, UK Columbia, (and a few obscure discs I had wanted from Sweden). AND a few very nice 78rpm discs from 1940-1956.

Just went my local record shop and scored me a reissue of BRMC's first album on vinyl! It's done by Music On Vinyl, has 4 bonus tracks, an etched side D and first run is on silver vinyl. It looks pretty cool and sounds good, too!

Re: Last few albums/lp's/ 7" singles you bought?

Post by semisynthetic »

Recordings from the Dutch are almost always superior; and for some reason, I still find some of the MOST obscure recordings of those of Denmark and Sweden together, still in MINT condition from a few Dealers from years past who dislike the Internet. Denmark often made discs for Sweden, the only "real" difference are details of codes on the label; they often used the same 7" Sleeves, but there are some startling examples that are QUITE different! I gave him a rather "vague" list of "very early Beatles 7" singles w/ PS, to be from Denmark or Sweden" and this is a few that came Today. I thought I would show "2" as examples, but I see that I have left off the Swedish. Whoops. Frankly, it takes a bit of looking on some of the discs to be certain! The sleeves are USUALLY essentially Identitical, except, the Swedish are the more Obscure of the two. It is hard to believe that they are 51 years old! He is supposed to be sending "Moderne Krautrock" next, and then a sort of "pot luck assortment of the LATEST releases", again of Dutch and Swedish issues. :D "2" is probably MORE than enough to show, (I do hope I didn't bore anyone too terribly badly with these "near antiquities").

I very often buy things I know nothing about; like this "Goat" pic disc that I learned LATER was on Beggars Banquet Label, and from 1991. NOT the newer "Goat" I was looking for; I bought it sight unseen from another old dealer a year or two ago. Just an old Goat no one else wanted apparently.

I obtained this single sided promo disc of "She Loves You" sung in German, on the USA "Swan" label; (w/ "Don't Drop Out" on the label); Many years ago, I had obtained every variant that I know of EXCEPT for this single little disc; and again, because it was so very nice, I obtained a wonderful copy of "History". There were many other labels, but I'm sure this crowd knows this; Vee Jay, MGM, Tollie, Parlaphone, White (and Black) Swan, Capitol and so on. It looks sort of forlorn, but is indeed a nice piece for the Arkiv; it is certainly an obscure one. From LATE 1963/ early 1964, White Swan single-sided Promo, "Sie Liebt Dich". Oh, yeah, there is also a single sided Promo of "I'll get You", but I have had that put away for ages.

I've liked Kate Bush and her music since the very first time I heard it. I'm sure in all the chaos that is my life, I have missed a single or even an LP here and there, but the European 7" singles are Beautifully done. "Breathing", "Babooshka" and other pieces are very listenable; "Cloudbusting" and other pieces - very nice. Yet another artist who started out with help from one of the Pink Floyd, David Gilmour.

I have an album called "Get Back", which I believe is a Japanese print or reissue of "River Deep"(?). I think the LP is now out of print. No denying the power in their soul when it takes off it is full tilt boogie!

went on an inner-city dig to a private house sale on Saturday. sketchy section of Philadelphia, burnt out houses and buildings, all that.

small 12x12 room full of Expidit shelving units, packed with records. came home with about 77 of them, some to keep and some to sell.

excited for a German press of Meddle, The Last Temptation Of Elvis (NME 1990), Beatles A Hard Day's Night on Odeon (Germany), Led Zeppelin III with the spinny wheel, King Crimson USA, Bowie "Heroes" Spanish 12" maxi in an op-art sleeve

can't wait for the next one in early summer.

Are you referring to the rumored new David Bowie album? Has there been any more news on that?

This is a fucking ace album! Probably my favorite "prog" album ever. It's so crazy and goes into directions that are completely unexpected. Not to mention, it fucking ROCKS! From its 3-d cover to its mighty grooves it is a 10/10 record.

$5 for an original copy is a steal. Is it a clean copy (3-D cover and record)? I would think a VG+/M copy would sell for more like $20-30. Enjoy. I love that record.

Yes, a wonderful recording; "Dancing Madly Backwards on a Sea of Air". I purchased my copy in a specialty shop many years ago. Great lenticular cover; (I am partial to the lenticular of "The Raven" by THE STRANGLERS).

There is some tape residue along the top edge. Other than that, I'd probably say VG+ on the sleeve, conservatively.
I haven't cleaned & spun the record yet, but unless there are some stray marks, It's likely VG+.

I did like what I heard in the shop. It's a bonus that I did well, price-wise.

Well, either your record shop guy doesn't know what he could sell it for...OR, he respects you enough that he didn't want it to sit in the bins for days, weeks, months until somebody bought it at $20+ so he sold it to a good home fast and cheap. Either way....SCORE and most likely a win/win situation!

Play this sucker LOUD! :D
