yep agreed.. believe it or not the second half of the album is even more nondescript! the first album was quite lowkey and chilled out too, but this one just seems to have devolved into nothingness!

But they sure are pretty :) I would still go see them live again, I saw them once a few years ago and I remember virtually nothing of it other than daydreaming about the girls...

HOLY WAVE and The Wobbly Lamps at The Railway Hotel pub in Southend On Sea last night:

YOWZA!! I'll keep it brief but that was fucking excellent! All completely sober as I drove down there and I didn't fancy starting the working week with a filthy hangover. Wobbly Lamps are a local band and friends of mine, recently supported Wilko Johnson in Guildford, just get better and better. Really deranged garage rock n roll. They're big fans of The Cramps, Elevators, 60's psych.....you know the score.
HOLY WAVE were a joy from start to finish. Very young guys but totally into their music. My friend interviewed them on the radio beforehand and they namechecked old UK bands like MBV and Sp3. They looked very stoned and very happy. Excellent turn out and reception for them, loads of dancing. Soundwise they really tear up that whole Texan Elevators type sound, some VU organ, swirly lightshow, swapping instruments, breaking bass strings, grinning their heads off. Really insane at times, that feeling where you just want to freak out and do some crazy dancing or laugh out loud. Kicked off with Night Tripper which had me going from the word go. Penultimate song Spooky Fuckin Blues was a juggernaut of driving sound, getting higher and higher. Got to say it really blew me away, proper mind elevation that left me buzzing and unable to sleep once home. Spoke to them afterwards and they're such a nice bunch and really appreciated the love in the room. It was a free gig and they said they couldn't wait to come back for more as they'd heard great things about the venue and scene. Blew Liverpool away apparently as most of that crowd disappeared after the local support band finished.
Can't wait to see them again and will def be picking up their records when I have more money in my wallet. Nice bit of vinyl on sale afterwards (Mark - it was only the two albums so I didn't pick you up anything, no one off singles).
Today is heavy tinnitus and a wonky head through lack of sleep. I love The Railway but the sound can be off at times, too much treble and distortion, few mic problems last night. In a venue with peachy sound these boys will be even better. Loved it!

Peter Hook & The Light last night.
went with an open mind and quite enjoyed it. it's still just kind of a tribute act that happens to have one of the original members, and it's not really high art.. just a good night out! the band were tight and sounded good (although the guitar could have been a bit higher in the mix.. same with Hooky's vocals)

opened with a short Joy Division set... this was a mixed bag, the rocky ones came across really well- Dead Souls, Wilderness.. and Colony sounded tremendous! the slower, deeper ones didn't come across so good.. Atmosphere sounded pretty lame (although that's one that Joy Division themselves never really nailed live either), same with Decades.

the New Order set was much more consistent.. there's less baggage with them and they were always poppier and lighter anyway. I am not hugely familiar with their early stuff but really enjoyed it.. those melodic Hooky basslines threading through.. the crowd (lots of eager 40 somethings!) were going crazy, especially by the climax of Ceremony-Temptation-Blue Monday.

Very generous of you. Most of the real hardcore are well into their 50's now...fat, grey and bald too...(two out of three in my case). I find it really surprising that March is the 31st anniversary of the release of Blue Monday. This is the point to me where my interest in New Order as a recording act began to wane, but I continued to watch them play stupidly regularly until 1988.

haha yeah maybe I was being generous.. knocking a few years off! there were a few young'uns but people were mainly 'of a certain age'. it was actually really good to part of a very enthusiastic and energetic crowd. a lot of gigs I go to involve more of a chin-stroking vibe...

wonder if in a couple of years Hooky will be doing a Get Ready - Waiting For The Sirens Call tour.. can't see that doing so well :D

no problem! I really enjoyed your set. the sound quality was really great too (I found a lot of the bands were cranked up to 11 whether they needed it or not, particularly, as Olan said Eat Lights:Become Lights)
Hi again angelsighs. Just a quick message to say if you listen to BBC 6 Music we are in session for them this Wednesday for Marc Riley (7pm-9pm) with another track for Gideon Coe (9pm-midnight) if you wish to listen.
This is part of the support for the new 7" on Too Pure, which sold out on pre-order a month ago, and apparently is their fastest ever sell-out, which is cool. Also got a UK tour starting next week too (not sure where you are based?!).
Thanks

Midlake tomorrow night in a lovely old church venue on the outskirts of town. Seeing White Denim again in May and hoping to get tickets to see Gruff Rhys who is appearing as part of this year's Brighton Festival. The future Mrs Shines is even considering the Slowdive/Loop/Hookworms gig in Paris or another continental gig as part of our honeymoon 8)

Nina Persson – The Scala.

OK, I am not a fan and I can think of maybe one or two of The Cardigans songs I liked (Favourite Game, great fat fuzzy bass riff on that) but I got asked along last minute and had never been to the Scala before. I fancied a night out and a beer or two so thought what the hell and went along. My hopes weren’t high, I have to say she was very professional and a very likeable person but just not my cup of tea at all. However…I managed to find somewhere to smoke and as I came back into the hall I thought, I know that song…it was Daniel Johnston’s Walking the Cow and she did go up up in my estimation somewhat after that.

It’s good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes.

Mogwai and The Pastels last Saturday night, Edinburgh, Usher Hall:

It was a tremendous gig, totally , but just to get a few niggles out the way 1st, stuck in a traffic jam as the rugby crowd left Murrayfield almost causing us to miss the start, although the Napoleonic infantry parading through the city celebrating their late victory added a surreal touch , city centre parking, £12.50 for 3hrs , extortionate bar prices £4 can of lager, £5 a spirit, finally, intended to buy Rave Tapes on cd from merch stall, £15, f#ck that!!

Anyway, music, The Pastels were okay for half an hour, must have been playing stuff from recent album, 1st in 16 yrs, sounded alright, highlight for me was set finishing with Baby Honey, right blast from the past, spotted a Teenage Fanclub playing bass for them,

Mogwai were terrific, saw them do a warm up show locally for the last album, my 1st time, nothing like this.I was a little unprepared for what was coming, a big theatre, light show and sound system, sensory overload with volume and vision, the set was almost perfect for my taste, 4 tracks from new album which all sounded good, especially Remurdered, was particularly pleased they played New Paths To Helicon, my fav. Mogwai track , plus Mogwai Fear Satan , Hunted By A Freak & I`m Jim Morrison, I`m Dead. Naturally it was loud , very loud even the quiet parts were quite loud , never heard many people talking was a plus point, but not so much it wasn`t enjoyable/thrilling stuff, at £27.50 I thought it was a bit pricey before hand, I`m not the biggest Mogwai fan but I do like them, afterwards, opinion totally reversed, amazing setting in the refurbished Usher Hall with a quality show , money well spent... and Batcat was the perfect ending, brutal, menacing and loud, in a good way

Back in from The Warlocks in Liverpool. I managed to have a decent night out largely due to Dave (Aquarian-Time) and Gaz being such a good laugh. Beer, fried food and exhaustion helped too.

The gig was a train wreck though. Mugstar played a half decent set, but it was 20 minutes too long, and I see them so regularly that I can't be objective. There was a new tune with a really grinding, circling Joy Division bass riff that was excellent though.

The Warlocks clearly wanted to play, even if Bobby (who looks like an over-fed Professor Snape these days) didn't. We got about 5 songs over 30-40 minutes (including a minutes silence after the first tune as Bobby needed to have a go at Mugstar and an aborted effort at a tune I don't know). He left the band to play an instrumental number (which was fab actually) and that was it. Proper prima-donna stuff, arse-ache behaviour....

Yep, top night in Liverpool with Olan, only Bobby (who has previous when it comes to storming off stage) proceeeded to attempt to ruin it. Due to the late running of this (again at Kazimier, lovely venue, nothing ever starts or finishes on time) me and my my mate Gaz were having to hot foot it for a train, so we missed nothing as it turned out.
When they were on stage they sounded great, Isolation in particular was fantastic.
I have no idea why he felt the need to have a go at Mugstar (although they were on too long) he just didnt want to be there as I saw it. Shame as it had the potential to be a wonderful gig.

To be fair James I couldnt make tomorrow anyway, so Thursday worked well for me.

I have no doubt when they return to these shores I will be stood at the front again, just a bit annoyed with the attitude of a guy in a fairly low key band who dont sell very many records. Reality check required me thinks

They played for bloody ages last night, thought they were pretty boring though.

Missed telescopes and cosmic dead cause I was DJing. Cult of Dom Keller were absolutely great, lovely chaps too. A band called lola colt played and they were really good too. KVB were a bit disappointing but I was just exhausted by then so that is probably why. Fair play to all involved, it was a great day.

Saw The Cure on Saturday night, they were incredible. Played for nearly 4 hours without an interval, few encores though. Got a couple of songs off Pornography which was great, all the hits and all the albums tracks you'd like to hear also like Prayers for Rain and the like. Finished off with a blistering version of killing an arab. Reeves Gabrels was on guitar, fantastic job from him. Highlights for me were if only tonight we could sleep and catch. The price seemed steep when I paid it, but they gave good value for it.

My ticket was just over 80 in the top circle of royal albert hall, standing was £130... I've got a recording of that, and also the bestival live set they released. I've never been a huge bootleg fan apart from for floyd, and the cure recordings don't really get the energy for me. Even when I saw them on the telly live I always thought they looked a bit shakey, but I saw them at primavera and also this week and both were fantastic.

Gig diary is overflowing at the moment, just been to two gigs in two days and another tonight !!

Tuesday was Lorelle Meets The Obsolete at Gullivers in Manchester. Met up with James T where we chewed the fat on all things bands, prmoting, gigs, outlandish fees for bands/artists and Bobby from The Warlocks being an arse. The venue has really been done up nicely, the gig room is upstairs with a decent high ceiling, nice decor and room for about 150-170 Im guesssing. Nice crowd in for a mid week approaching 80 odd. Spectres supported and were decent enough, not really psych, more garagey rock with the odd trangression into soemthing more interesting. As supports go, not too bad. Lorelle's new album I think is very good in my opinion and much of the 10 song set was drawn from the new LP, sound in the room was good, drims a little tinny but generally good. Vocals nice and clear. Style of the band is obvioulsy Psych but quite dark overall, which I find more interesting with a female frontwoman, decent noise created in the louder sections. Not earth shatteringly good but a decent way to spend a tuesday evening avoiding The Champions League anyway.

Last night it was another meet up, this time with angelsighs at the quite splendid Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath (Birmingham) where Loop were preparing themselves for their jaunt to the states with Heads drummer Wayne Maskell in tow. angelsighs and myself were positioned right in front of Robert/Josh/Paul/Albert whatever his name is ! and we can confirm, it was pretty loud, not too loud, but loud nonetheless. They played for about 1 hour 15 mins. Set similar to last years comeback shows but they added Forever off the first album for the first time in ?? A long time no doubt.
I think we can safely say Robert was less than impressed with Neil on bass duties, several (well a lot actually) unimpressed glares and head shaking going on in Neil's direction, this was a feature for the last third of the gig, and I thought a little unproffesional and pompous from Loop's main man. Angelsighs and myself both agreed we didnt hear anything seemingly wrong with the sound or playing, if he was unhappy with something, a quiet word surely would suffice surely ?
Anyhow decent show played with good intensity, no doubt assisted by the excellent skills of Wayne, who seemed to add another dimension to what are failry basic Loop drumming patterns, so a couple of tunes seemed to add a little somethng extra which was nice. Venue was rammed, but only sold out on the night (250 capacity) no obviousattempts to promote the gig anywhere other than the Hare and Hounds website so it was clearly a secret(ish) type warm up show and meant for the hardcore and those 'in the know'.
Good night, good catch and tonight...Lumerians await at band on the wall

yep great show last night from Loop. the Hare & Hounds is one of my favourite venues- nice bar downstairs for pre gig chat, then a tiny room upstairs with great sound. it was plenty loud but not to an extreme (although I could certainly feel the feedback bits inbetween songs giving the ears a workout), thought the sound was generally spot on, the fuzz was thick and heavy and Robert's voice very low in the mix (as it should be).
I do remember him saying that it was the 'first time' they played Forever, I assume he meant on this reunion tour.
I think my favourite tune was The Nail Will Burn. I never liked A Gilded Eternity that much but it has grown on me a lot recently. the grinding riff to this really hit the spot.
the snotty glances at the bassplayer did leave a sour taste, we definitely didn't hear any major bollocks dropped.
thought the drummer was very much on the ball, he seemed to have the drums corner covered no bother.
I bought the 3 CD version of The World in Your Eyes, which strangely has no tracklist anywhere to be seen on it??

I thought they were really great, one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen recently apart from that girl swinging herself about in front of us. Drums didn't sound too great like you said, but in a small room that close to the kit I guess it is kinda difficult.

Looking forward to seeing boogarins tonight.

Dean Wareham- Magic Bag Ferndale.
A good night out. Took the crowd a while to warm up. Any Luna/Dean & Britta/Dean Wareham gig is a good night out. Nothing amazing but if you are a fan its well worth it.
Nice mix of Luna/Galaxie 500 and new stuff.

Was Fuxa providing supporting at this show? If so, how was that? Randall said he was planning on playing some Fuxa versions of stuff from Spectrum's Indian Giver... was kinda intruiged how that would have went.

I saw Dean Wareham on Friday night. It was an early show and he went on at 8pm. I really love the new album, so it was great to hear some of those songs live. The venue was Old Town School of Music. Very tiny and intimate and a seated venue. The sound was very quiet and Dean's guitar didn't cut through was well as it should have. Overall, it was enjoyable, but I really miss Sean Eden. The guitarist he had on board didn't impress me much. Luna was such a wonderful band. It is somewhat of a bummer to see Dean and Britta playing with hired hands that obviously aren't as invested in the music as the members of Luna were.

Sleepy Sun at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.

For some odd reason they were on stage at 7 p.m. which meant we missed a good 30 minutes. But all the rest of the set we saw was quite excellent, particularly as I had no idea what to expect having never seen them before. Hardly the most visual bunch, but that's not the idea really. They produced these huge walls of melting guitar that all gelled together in fine fashion so I don't think they cared what they looked like. The music all moved quite slowly so felt rather magisterial in its effect. No idea about the band but the singer had a mighty voice. I know people think they were superior with a female backing singer but they didn't seem to have any trouble making their presence known without her. I am not that familiar with their back catalogue but I did recognise Fever at the end which was really awesome.

Nice to have been to a venue as famous as that too. The sound was terrific inside but my only grumble is that when it was half full the place was tricky to get round as it felt a lot fuller than it was. But whatever, the whole thing was over well before 9 so we went out for a Thai curry after... Taken over 3 months for my first gig of 2014 and it took a trip to Europe to accomplish it!

Sleepy sun I shall be seeing tomorrow night. Seen them four times thus far, twice with the female singer and twice without. The two without were by far the better. Her Vox were to dominating (as was her on stage persona) and Brett seemed to sit behind her a bit due to this, when she left, he came much more to the forefront and he has a great voice. Love this band (despite the poor third album) New LP is good first two are killer

GOAT w/Holy Wave.

Holy Wave...can be summed up easily - 13th Floor Elevators meets Black Angels. Seeing that the Angels were channeling the Elevators, Holy Wave came across as a band clearly inspired by the BA's then they went out and bought some Roky. Perhaps a bit unfair and they were ok, I guess, but I felt I had heard it before and wasn't new or fresh.

GOAT - musically they are very infectious. A great beat. I love what is going on with the screeching wah, thundering, tribal rhythms, funky "Shaft" like soundtrack. The ladies were mesmerizing to watch with peacock feathers, ribbons, bare feet...dancing all over the place, I was in the front so they were getting into your personal space, squatting in front looking right at you, pushing maracas out towards you, dancing etc. Sexy, yet crazy and at times intimidating as the only part of their face you could see was their eyes

BUT....I still struggle with the whole get up/costume. One band member was wearing a burka, others in various masks, scarves, robe/kimono gown attire and the girls in masks with huge plumes of feathers, bells on their feet. Because the band are all white (maybe one guitarist isn't?) the play on the the whole black African, witchcraft, voodoo, religion thing still makes me feel uneasy. The audience too were all white and a few people were at the front who had clearly seen several shows as they too had made their own "tribal" costumes. It was entertaining and the music is difficult not to get into while watching these two crazy chicks dance maniacally all over the place. But, unlike the horror/monster costumes of Slipknot or GWAR....it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable as it treads so close to being perceived as offensive....almost as if it's mocking another religion/culture (a white guy wearing a burka while playing an electric guitar. Hmmmm.). I know their intention is pure theatre and obviously not to offend or come across mocking and maybe I'm being overly PC, but it's still a question mark in my head about this band.

Carlton Melton last night in MCR. Another top night out with Dave & Co. Much beer (and a pint of water/bleach/beer pump cleaner  ) before. Carlton Melton were on top form. Nice to see James T who was clearly happy with the event which was sold out but not rammed. Missed the last train home so had a stupid early start.....sore head and ringing in my ears now :(

EDIT: Just noticed this is post 1000 for me. Only took about eight years......

Thanks for coming, I think everyone had a bloody great time. We sold out, but there's always some weirdos who buy 10 tickets and don't show! Still, any more people and it would've been difficult for some to see it all, so I'm glad at how it panned out.

Been to a few over the last few weeks and not really had time to look back at them yet...

11th Apr - Lumerians, Beatroots & Drone Rivers

I was tipped off before hand that i might want to get down to the venue early to catch Drone Rivers from my friends in The Cosmic Dead. Basically, The Cosmic Dead wanted to play a more experimental set without any of their usual fans turning up expecting business as usual. It most certainly was not! Usual line up, but additional drums and various items ( a huge steel door!) lying all over the place all used to create waves and waves of noise and loops until the venue was just throbbing with waves of sound where upon the guitarist and bass player grabbed their usual instruments and started laying some heavy riffs and sounds of their own all while the drummer (he is an incredible drummer IMO) kept a deafening beat throughout it all. Their master of electronics accompanied the entire things wonderfully with oscillators and synths. Really impressive set from these amazing young guys.
Beatroots were a very typical 60s influenced band with some good cover versions. First time i've seen a sitar played on stage but that was pretty cool to see and they had some catchy tunes too. Not quite in fitting with the rest of the line up but not offensive in any way.
I wasn't sure what to expect from The Lumerians. I'm a big fan and have been looking forward to this for a while, but I have found their more recent releases to be much more electronic based than their earlier recordings which had a real dirty, fuzzy guitar sound to them, but what i saw really, really impressed me. Setlist was everything i could have hoped for - a good mix of new and old (except for their Osmond's cover which i would have loved to have seen played  ) but they managed to capture the guitar element really well in their live performance. All very droned out and beat-tastic (drummer and bass player were bloody superb) but the whole thing was great. They finished on the epic Life Without Skin which they managed to drag out for what seems like forever... was just amazing to hear it played out like that.

17th Apr - Sleepy Sun

First two support bands were fucking dreadful. Not just a case of not being my cup of tea, and i appreciate everyone needs an opportunity, but they were both REALLY REALLY bad. Their rent-a-crowd of (deaf) family and friends danced and nodded along but it was just torture. An endurance test to say the least.
Was really excited about this one. Love all the Sleepy Sun albums, even their new one which was given a healthy outing at this show. Played a great collection of new and old throughout the show and they managed to get a real groove going amongst what appeared to be a really sparse audience. One of the guitarists, Matt i think, was on fire all night long... recreating all those lovely tones and sounds from the albums ever so well. To be fare, the entire band played their hearts out.
Had a lovely chat with all the band members afterwards who were all really nice to hear from a fanboy and happy to sign various bits and bobs too for my son who is a big fan. Great show and really really nice people too!

23th Apr - Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats

Had high hopes for this show too. My brother had seen them support Black Sabbath in Glasgow a few months back and said they really went for it at that show, so we were both eager to see them in a the smaller venue.
The venue itself we had no control over and it was Glasgow's Garage, which i fuckin loathe. Really shitty venue, with lukewarm beer and where every pint is really only half a pint with the rest made up with white foam and costs you £4.50. Door staff are arseholes. I was searched as i entered and made to empty out all my pockets (i had no bag or jacket with me) whilst people with rucksacks and heavy jackets walked in unimpeded... just bloody stupid.
Not sure of the support bands' names but both, while highly proficient musicians, didn't really do anything for me. First band were ok in a kinda 70s heavy rock way, but the second band left me cold. More metal-esque rock which the audience seemed to lap up but it was very much a metal-orientated audience.
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats were weird. Came on and really went for it and the songs were great and a little more loose than the releases (which is always good) but after the majority of the set, it did feel like it was getting a little samey with each song. I wasn't hugely blown away with Mind Control but i loved Blood Lust and their debut Vol1 in places, but it did seem to come across rather one-dimensional at times. My brother commented that they would have sounded wonderful if they have thrown in an occasionaly wah-wah or something else to help change the sound a little, but it was not to be. Very enjoyable, but not sure i would go see them again unless i'm convinced otherwise with their next release.

Had to pass up on King Khan this week which, in hindsight, may have been more "entertaining" than Uncle Acid, but thems the decisions we make. Hopefully King Khan will come back sometime soon (although i was bitterly disappointed to hear some wee thieving prick stole something from their stage at the end of the show!!! - ridiculous!)

2nd May- Black Submarine/Echo & The Bunnymen

wasn't sure what to expect from either band but as a double bill it was worth a go.
Black Sub were on at 7:30 sharp, unfortunately not much of a crowd at that time, although it did fill up near the end. It did allow me to get right at the front though, got some good views of Nick and the others. they were definitely better live than on record (although the album has grown on me a little), but I wouldn't say it blew me away. Nick's guitar sounds were gorgeous (I think a lot of his secret is a really good tone), he was triggering some loops from a gizmo too. they are all obviously great musicians, but the only times it got epic were some of the outros. the whole set was from the album apart from the opener which was from a soundtrack they did (was a bit more of a rocky sound for them).

very sizable crowd has formed by the time the Bunnymen came on. I have seen them twice before, once they were brilliant and the other time awful. this gig was somewhere inbetween. Ian was looking trimmer and his voice sounded better too. the setlist was mainly 80's stuff, topped with a good helping from the new album. despite what I may think of the new songs, I always respect it when a band puts faith in their new material.
the new songs did sound fairly bland, but they didn't stick out too much. I recognised Holy Moses and there was also one called Constantinople which was actually pretty good.
they played My Kingdom which is one of my personal faves, so chuffed with that. love that guitar solo. Nothing Lasts Forever is one I have never cared for, but it was done as a medley with Walk on The Wildside which was pretty cool.
so overall a pretty good set. you definitely get a feel of "Ian & Will plus session musicians" though. also I kind of wished there wasn't a second guitarist and Will could just crank it up instead.
the final song was Lips Like Sugar, halfway through someone threw a beer can up on stage. Ian threw a total wobbly, lots of swearing and offering a fight later, he walked off. cliched rock star behaviour. I think the set was finished anyway but no need to ruin the night because of one idiot.

That's pish for White Hills, such a hardworking band, they deserve better, but it sounds like they still gave it their all, saw them twice in pokey cellars, and there wasn`t many there, although slightly more than a dozen!! Going to Liverpool Psych. Fest. later this year, and seeing White Hills playing to a bigger room & crowd is one of the things I`m really looking forward to, although there`s definitely something to be said for seeing a band that close up, and White Hills always seem to have time for chatting to anyone that comes to see them,

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Wonder Ballroom: Portland, OR

My third time seeing CRB and they are the perfect hippie jam band. I don't like (nor get) the goofy Phish or all the other post-Dead jam bands but as a Crowes fan, I have tremendous respect for Chris Robinson.

No support band - they strolled on around 9:15 and played nearly 90 minutes then took a set break and came back out and played for another 80 or so minutes. Show was over around 12:45am. There were some technical difficulties at times, which is odd as the Wonder is usually spot on with the sound. The gig was also pretty crowded with some very hairy people, tie dyes, long flowing skirts, a lot of white/hippie dancing and more pot being openly smoked at a gig than I can remember. It was so prevalent that the bouncers must have turned a blind eye. Or, it clearly says very strongly that Oregon will be the next state to legalize.

I really enjoyed Warm Digits last Friday in Newcastle at a very small packed venue. The surprise however was the support band Parastatic who since I last saw them have a drummer which added a real power to their sound.

Courtney Barnett at The Harley in Sheffield last night.

Having the trip there and back bathed in glorious spring sunshine rather set the scene for a great night, as did the hours sitting in the Harley's beer garden in the build-up. Courtney Barnett's gig schedule is endless as she's been playing seemingly non-stop for ages and I've been looking forward to this show for some time. For someone comparatively young she's delved into a lot of really cool areas - 60s, Velvets etc. - to come up with her sound. For me she's up there with artists like Kendra Smith/Opal, Lida Husik, Liz Phair.... Live she plays as a 3 piece with Courtney herself handling all the guitar. I half expected an additional guitarist to cope with the amount of noise on offer but she covered every angle with ease, from cool picks and riffs to big beefy fuzz overload. Some of the time it was amazing the amount of noise she was able to produce so on songs like Canned Tomatoes and History Eraser she pushed the sound pretty damn hard and the heavy nature of a lot of the songs was really satisfying. This outfit have played together long enough to be really tight and the guys on bass and drums were excellent. Initially the set started out a little loose with opening track David all over the place sound-wise - no real vocals or guitar audible - and as the sound guy was standing a few feet from me I was concerned, but he did something to change it and the 2nd track was amazing and it carried on like that.

The only grumbles were a somewhat short set - just over 50 minutes - and I could have sat through it a second time easily enough. Also at no point did the band cut loose on a jam, so on Are You Looking After Yourself the potential guitar work-out I wanted didn't appear. That band could easily meander off into all sorts of cool guitar areas - when they flew it reminded me of Stereolab in their droney prime - and I'd love to hear them get into a long jam. But I'm being picky - they were excellent and I really enjoyed it. Caught a few minutes with Courtney after - very chatty and friendly - and grabbed a signature on my prized vinyl. We stayed over and my final memory of the end of the evening was watching Courtney and her 2 band members dancing to the DJ with grins plastered all over their faces. That's some unit she has there and it was pretty cool to see them having so much fun.

If things carry on the way they have been Courtney Barnett could well become a major star. The songs are too good to be ignored, she has a great voice and is a truly excellent guitarist. It was packed at The Harley - a sell out - and I know that's been the case all over. One to watch - and not to miss if you get the opportunity...

Love her album/EP's. Something about her also reminds me of Sheryl Crow but, the description of her live set sounds nothing similar to Crow.

That she is! On her website she is scheduled to play a local festival here in Portland on Aug 1 and then a festival in Montreal on the same day!

I suppose that is technically possible due to the three hour time difference between here and Montreal and she could play early in Portland and late in Montreal. However, there are still 3000 miles between the two cities and no direct flight. That will be KILLER. Who the hell organized that?

Great to meet you MODLAB, wow what a night, what a blooming night

Hopped ff the train from Crewe into Eustron, swift underground journey to meet Dom from GPS label and his better half in the Old Red Cow near Barbican Tube. Couple of hours chewing the fat and then over to Old St station, a short walk and into the lovely Hoxton Square, sun beating down, everyone in great spirits, includes James T and his good lady Becky and the aforementioned MODLAB. The great and the good from The Pysch world were present in tiny venue (300 apparently) where were treated to a solo set from Mark Gardener (who had time for pretty much anyone and is a true gent), Ulriich Scnhaus playing his Kosmiche style electronica interspersed with Andy Wetherall on the decks of destiny (amongst others )
The main event (which we kind of already knew, although officially still a secret) was of course Slowdive, playing their first gig in pretty much 20 years tp the day. Well we were not to be dissapointed. It was epic, loud, quiet, swooning, majestic, beautiful, transient, and pretty much note perfect. From the opening bars of Slowdive (just about kept my shit togther at this point, others didnt!), to the final bars of Alison, it was perfect. A perfect day in great company and a great way for one of the nicest guys on the circuit in Sonic Cathderals main man, Nat, to celebrate his labels tenth birthday.
This is one that will go down in folklore I tell thee...and I was there
oh and James T wept like a good un, during "She Calls"

It's all true, tears all over the place. The best gig I have ever seen in my life. Can't wait to do it all again tonight at village underground! Everyone was such a bloody great laugh too, the bands, the crowd and my buddies. Everyone had a brilliant time.

Big mention has to go to our man modlab for making some young lads night by giving him a spare ticket at no cost. This lad must've been about 18 and looked close to years wandering about trying to get entry. Top stuff. Everything was perfect about last night.

Cat Power ( solo ) at Brighton Dome . Some sound problems with Chan's guitar and her usual nervousness, but
what a beautiful voice. Nice to hear the songs stripped to guitar and piano.

I'm interested in hearing more about this...do you know which piece it was? I'm guessing Electric Counterpoint (the one with like 12 guitar lines on tape and one live performer)? I know johnny greenwood does work with max/msp though, so I'm wondering if he was doing any live processing of any sort given that his laptop was out...

yes, it was that one. the majority of it was on his laptop and he was playing along to it. i don't know what max/msp means but to me it seemed just to be taking the part of another guitairist whilst mr greenwood played over it. the show was recoded by the bbc for a future broadcast. i'm trying to find out when to record it

It seriously couldn't have been better, apart from it would've been nice to see them play Spanish Air. If you're a fan, you will be an even bigger fan afterwards. If you're not a fan, you will be a fan afterwards. My mrs isn't particularly a fan of them, but she came out and said it was one of the best things she'd ever seen also.

Lovely, lovely gig last night, highlights of which were a 12-member Sunburned Hand of the Man playing loud as fuck, groove after screaming groove, and a somewhat impromptu Chasny/Corsano duo doing Six Organs material electrified madness and wonderful.

Thank you, Rock n Roll, I love you.

Total Bliss.

I have Sunburned's 'Jaybird' which is an incredible record. One of the wildest and most out there psychedelic records I have ever heard. Closing track 'Too High To Fly No More' is simply astonishing. Someone described it as 'Can on Woodstock brown acid' which is pretty close to how it sounds.

On the other hand I have seen Jackie O Motherfucker live twice - who feature a few of the same members - and both times they were spectacularly poor. Unpleasant even.

I also once saw a band called simply 'Sunburned' supporting Acid Mothers Temple which was some of the same people again - and they played a one track set which was a long jammed out version of Down By The River. I didn't expect that.
