Warm Digits for an evening of Krautrock in Newcastle. With support from local lads Parastatic who I haven't seen for a while.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Just purchased tickets for The Flaming Lips in Edinburgh at the end of May. Consistently one of the best live bands in the world. The Terror is a modern day classic IMO, I am sure live it will be even better.
Also will be at the following (thankfully via band duties):
Follakzoid @ The Shacklewell Arma on 1st June
Night Beats @ Manchester The Roadhouse on 5th June
Astral Coast Festival, New Brighton in July (Bill Ryder Jones, By The Sea, The Sundowners, The Wild Eyes etc)
Liverpool Psych Fest in September

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
some more popping up on the horizon.
Hawkwind/Pink Fairies- Leamington. (read a fair amount about these bands in the Shindig* spacerock issue. not sure what either will be like these days but worth a go)
The Antlers- Birmingham. (well, I only really like their Hospice album so will see.)
*- as an aside, I saw that the latest issue iof Shindig has a mini mag in it called Reverberate covering a lot of modern psych (Wooden Shjips, Follakzoid etc), might be of interest to many here.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I'm not a huge Hawkwind fan, but live they have never been anything other than a great night out in my (fairly limited) experience. They have a particularly manic/bonkers hardcore bunch of fans who are quite elderly now, but who are totally insane once the band/their mood altering stuff kicks off.angelsighs wrote:some more popping up on the horizon.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
good question- no idea! I just saw their name on the lineup too and thought it was apt. apparently back in the day the two bands used to do epic jams together.redcloud wrote:Love the three official Fairies albums and there is some great live stuff of theirs out there as well! I'm not the biggest Hawkwind fan in the world but I do imagine that they put on a good show (as confirmed by Olan)

But, they were very much anti-festivals and felt music should be for free. So, they and the Deviants would often jam in the parking lots or on the periphery of the festivals! There is, of course, connections with The Deviants, The Pretty Things and Motorhead.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
had a google and found this info about the Pink Fairies reunion:
From the Westway to the West Midlands and further beyond to Tyneside, the jungle drums have been beating for some time of late. But the suspense is finally over and speculation can stop. Yes, it's true – for the first time in nearly 25 years, those legendary Pink Fairies of Ladbroke Grove are reforming for one last-throw-of-the dice and embarking on what has been referred to, with tongue perhaps not so firmly in cheek, as 'The Pension Credit Tour'. Who was it that said ‘Pigs might fly?’
With much regret Paul Rudolph had to decline due to logistical reasons, but he’s wished the others well. Larry Wallis has been ruled out of the equation due to health reasons, whilst the ever Marmite-like Twink (you either love him or hate him), is firmly ensconced in Morocco.
So, that leaves originals Russell Hunter and Duncan ‘Sandy’ Sanderson, along with guitarist supremo Andy Colquhoun from the ‘Kill ‘Em And Eat ‘Em’ line-up to spearhead the outing, lavishly assisted by Jaki Miles-Windmill, their co-member in the most recent incarnation of the late Mick Farren’s Deviants, along with ‘Previously Unreleased’ George Butler, a stalwart of the Ladbroke Grove music scene and currently drummer with the Keith Richards-endorsed West London rhythm & blues combo, The Dirty Strangers
– yes, the two-drummer format returns! They all unite in barely cohesive glorious chaos for The Pink Fairies’ final hurrah! The best of luck to them – they deserve it.
Although leaning towards a Rudolph-orientated catalogue of delights there will be appreciative acknowledgements to Larry Wallis, as well as Andy Colquhoun’s own input on a couple of numbers.
So, there will be enough variation to satisfy everyone’s tastes. Hell, they might even throw in a couple of Deviants’ numbers too if you’re lucky! This may well be your last chance to see the legendary British underground rock institution in action, so don’t waste this golden opportunity to catch them live – Do It! Oh, and don’t forget to boogie!

Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles tonight.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion tomorrow.
Gruff Rhys (probably) next Saturday
Archie Bronson Outfit next Sunday. Had no idea they were back out touring so this was a pleasant surprise.
Brian Jonestown Massacre in July.
Woods, a few days before Liverpool Psych Fest. Might as well catch them in Dublin as i wasn't planning on watching them in Liverpool.
Plus Body & Soul and Electric Picnic.
Possibly might be going to these over the next few weeks also:
Electric Eel Shock
War On Drugs

White Denim tomorrow night. Second time we'd have seen them in Brighton in the last 6 months...they must like it down here They're one of my wife's favourites and are fantastic live. Not much else on the horizon gig-wise apart from War on Drugs at the end of June and Neil Young in Hyde Park in the summer. Oh, and not forgetting the Jesus & Mary Chain Psychocandy gig in London in the Autumn

Lumerians - June 10 - never seen em, excited for it, have a feeling I will enjoy it a lot.
Sun Araw, Golden Retriever, and M. Geddes Gengras - June 20 - so excited for this show, haven't been in LA at the same time as a full SA Band show since the summer, so I am really really pumped - all the recordings of the recent live shows have been amazing, can't wait for this. Plus Golden Retriever are and Ged has a new record out on the 24th so that should be cool. Not often you get to see two full on modular set ups in one show. Will be some good synth eye candy.

Not much for a while then Liverpool Psyche Fest in September, Mogwai in October (same venue as the Psyche Fest) and The War on Drugs at the festering hole that is the 02 Academy in Liverpool in November. That is quite a lot for an old git like me. I'll need a sit-down na maybe even a nap after three gigs in three months

The Jesus & Mary Chain, Vicar St. Dublin 31st July.
Only announced at 10am today, i didn't hear about it 'til noon. Managed to snag two tickets
I know i've been far from impressed since they reformed but this is their first indoor Irish gig since 1998 so no way was I gonna miss it.

I'm trying to ease off on the gigs for a bit, got a holiday to save for etc.
and maybe trying to limit it to bands I've never seen before.
one I have got lined up is The Telescopes in a few months.. if they play all the noisy stuff from Taste I'll be chuffed.
also Sleepy Sun are playing Birmingham, not gonna miss that... hope they get a better turn out than last time!!

wooden shjips at millenium park in august (can't remember who they're opening for)
stargazer lilies/tobacco in september
white fence at subterranean
slowdive at the vic
possibly sharon van etten in october (it's at a beautiful restored theater on the southside- it's just a matter of if i'm willing to make the trek)
there are a few others i'm sure i'm forgetting

Got Hookworms this coming Friday and then a few big ones coming up over the next few months:-
Goat, Mogwai, Jesus & Mary Chain, Slowdive and maybe, just maybe, (fingers crossed and dependent on work/finances) a trip up to Liverpool for the Psych Fest.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Electric Picnic this weekend where some genius has scheduled Slowdive and Mogwai to be headlining different stages at the same time!!!!!!!!!!
Fair enough if it was the kind of festie that specialised in this sort of thing but they're the only two acts on the entire line up playing epic guitar noise. I'll opt for Slowdive as i've never seen them but I really didn't think i'd have to make the choice.
Also looking forward to Julian Cope doing a spoken word session on Sunday afternoon

Have Goat at the tail end of September along with Spindrift the following night and hoping to get to Manchester to see Dead Sea Apes and Kikagaku Moyo in October... too many others i'd love to see... can't see everyone unfortunately!
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Go and see Slowdive. Mogwai are great, but they'll play again. Can't really say that about Slowdive (who have always been 100% brilliant live in my experience (having not seen them play for nearly 20 odd years).sunray wrote:Electric Picnic this weekend where some genius has scheduled Slowdive and Mogwai to be headlining different stages at the same time!!!!!!!!!!
