He knows pretty much what stuff is worth. Unless it's a major collector piece, he prices stuff to sell.

Example: Going rate might be $80 for a record; he'll put it out at $60 and post to Instagram; it might be gone or on hold within minutes. And he mostly DOESN'T mail order!

He currently has Let It Come Down there for $40. Lowest sold price on discogs is $50. Current lowest offering is $75.

I have found amazing deals there. I love this store. And it's a short drive from where I live and work.

couple more to add to my 'new' pile. I've got lots of listening to do!

Dif Juz- Soundpool (this was a bargain- their albums seem pretty rare. someone was selling this for £7 where other copies were upwards of £30)
Durutti Column- Chronicle XL (nice lush boxset this, I got in on some preorder action)

Soundpool is a compliation album right? I have Out of the Trees which is almost identical. Brilliant band though. I saw them backing the Cocteau Twins in October 1986, Richard Thomson the sax player from Dif Juz came out and played on the opening song in the Cocteau's set (Lazy Calm). FWIW, Dif Juz were the better band that night.

yep that's the one! I think it's a compilation of tracks released on singles. it was the only record of theirs I could find at a reasonable price. I love anything with a shimmering guitar sound so it's right in my wheelhouse!

GBP 3,299.25
I really enjoy finding these early recordings, all original, 1st releases, all in PS, and from, well, ALL OVER!
I was VERY pleased to find a BEAUTIFUL copy of Zappa's Guitar/ Dog Breath from France on Vogue, (Yeah, I know) and THE WHO singles. I have obtained discs from this dealer before, and he is a strict grader! That always helps! I DO highly recommend the Dutch discs, and the Portugese; the pressings are very nice, and for the "popular" discs of their time, as long as they are Mint or M-, they may exceed a new UK or US example in sound quality; there were fewer pressed, and more attention paid to them. Anyway, I am confident that these will sound GREAT despite the time passed by; these appear to be "put-away discs", in wonderful condition.

It also has a really cool sleeve by a psychedelic artist called Larry Carlson. I have a print of his on my wall. Larry captures the lysergic experience better than anyone I know - his short films are very close to the acid experience. Not an easy thing to do. Look up his site - There are tons of pictures and films. I love his stuff. http://larrycarlson.com/

Like these mega tripped out films:

But be warned - these are very intense.

Came across this today and could not walk away from it. Never seen it before....

The Pretty Things - "Get Yourself Home" b/w "We'll Be Together" Ltd. Ed. 10" (544/1000) signed and numbered by John Stax on Dog Meat Records in 1992. Came with oodles of posters & inserts. The A-side was recorded by original band but never released.

Also ordered a vinyl copy of Wonderland today on discogs, that would complete the collection ;)

Is it just Portland or do others notice that originals of "Presence" seem to be the highest priced Zeppelin LP's? I wish I still had mine when I was a kid. I got rid of it as a 10 year old as it didn't make the same impression as Zepp I, II, and IV.

No RL in the dead wax unfortunately on LZ ll.
The Stones mono Lp is a 1981 French reissue. Sounds great. No 3-d cover either. I do have a few stereo copies of the 3-D cover though.
This shop is mainly an R&B/Jazz shop. Every once in a while they get a great rock collection and price at fraction of what other shops charge. A nice change from skyrocketing collectible record prices.

Just popped back in and picked up LZ Presence for $5. Name written on back but Lp is N.Mint.

Presence for $5 sounds good, for some reason it seems to be more expensive than other LZ albums.

I have an RL Led Zep II with one skip on the end of side 2, I picked it up in trade with a friend. He has 3 RL copies left!

Also got a first US press LZ I from him. I don't think I will come across any nice UK pressings unless I luck into one.

Below is the very FIRST release by "Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band", released in small numbers in the USA, but not the UK, it was hardly released anywhere else in the world; EXCEPT in Belgium and Australia, with the former being extremely rare! This may not seem odd today; but European countries in particular were usually releasing these labels right along with the USA (or UK) releases. A&M records followed the interest for their own interests in this wild and bizarre Captain. From 1966, this Belgium release on London is "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE FOOLING NOW" w/ "DIDDY WAH DIDDY".

A fellow who has collected essentially NOTHING ELSE but Captain Beefheart was Happily Amazed and Astounded; for he had 1 Belgium copy, and he "had seen a photo of a copy", but never a second copy had he seen in over 40 years! The way he spoke about this little disc when I told him what I had happened across for my little "Arkiv", was retold TO ME like a long lost Treasure had been unearthed from beneath one of Jupiter's Moons! A really nice fellow and a living encyclopedia of knowledge about this unusual Artist and the twists and turns of his career. There is an amazing History here of why this, why here, and why, specifically, Belgium? Why not the Nordic countries who seem to be USUALLY first with these new and sometimes bizarre bands? (Frankly, a great deal of Captain Beefheart has always made me think "WHY!"; but I am very pleased to add this bizarre little disc to my collection).

I obtained this "essentially new", and amazingly still unplayed copy! from another fellow who I knew liked Zappa, (but I now believe this 2nd fellow was more "Beefheart Obsessed" than the 1st)! I am always looking for interesting items, and I really like "first releases" by Bands, and for decades bought (2) copies of each new release from a NEW band from the store. I don't do this so often anymore, but I DO still buy the 1st release from new bands I find to be the most interesting (using rather nondescript criteria). (I am using the photos sent to me, so they appear to NOT be as clear as they should, but I am not yet able to photo them myself).
NOTE: the credit for DIDDY WAH DIDDY should go to Bo Diddley; and later re-releases corrected this error - one simple way to know this is a 1st copy. London records were A&M records distributor in Europe, (Belgium). The list of details about this little disc is mind boggling; as is Captain Beefheart! :D

The very First and most Obscure "Captain Beefheart" 1st release outside of the USA, was released contemporaneously, in Belgium, in 1966......only 48 years ago.
:D

One more "Captain Beefheart"; "Safe as Milk" was the 1st LP release; below is the FRENCH only version; as "Super Groups Volume 8" from 1970. "Safe as Milk", always have liked that title! (Again, I am relying on images sent to me for now.) If you are familiar with "Firesign Theatre", you may recall their use of the phrase "Safe as Clown's Milk".

SHOCKING BLUE "Send Me A Postcard" psychedelia SWEDEN 7" p/s "Harley Davidson" GREAT!
From an Article on The Shocking Blue:
"A: Send Me A Postcard
B: Harley Davidson
[I.M.A. 1002, SWEDEN]
For some very strange reason it wasn't the "usual" version of "Send Me A Postcard" that got issued in Sweden. Instead a MUCH grittier and more brutal version (mastered very "hot") was used and appeared on the disappearingly tiny independent I.M.A. label. As far as I know this version wasn't released anywhere else. This is the version to have. It's a super mod / freakbeat dancer and always fills the dancefloor. NOTE that the labels on the 45 have been flipped and are on the wrong sides of their corresponding title.
"

TROGGS "When Will The Rain Come" NORWAY 45 superb psychedelic "Love Is All Around" PS; obscure.
DONOVAN "Hey Gyp"/ "Dig The Slowness" MOD DANCER SWEDEN 45 rpm psychedelic acid folk PS; (assigned as "dance FREAKOUT!" on a small, hand-written card within the protective sleeve containing the single & PS); obscure.

BEATLES / MARY HOPKIN "Goodbye" *M-* DENMARK 45 unique Danish PS APPLE 10 1966; obscure.
ROLLING STONES It's All Over Now *M-* Denmark 45 UNIQUE Danish PS 1966; obscure.
ROLLING STONES She's A Rainbow *M-* PS; Denmark/ UK 45 Danish 2000 Light Years From Home" 1967; obscure release as most Danish PS are;
(This last disc was pressed in the UK, but the sleeves were made in Denmark; this was quite often the manner in which some of these early releases were done; there is almost always some minute indication either pressed in the runout of the record, (or a very minute indicator on the label), of where the disc was made; very often, the labels appear to be that of the same country that produced the sleeves, but not necessarily the vinyl; but a careful viewing will reveal the truth of it).

Unfortunately no. I've just read about it after your post - I got the regular CD supermarket version sadly.

Vinyl LP pressing includes two bonus tracks hidden under the center labels. One hidden track plays at 78 RPM, one plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record. Side A plays from the outside in. Dual-groove technology: plays an electric or acoustic intro for 'Just One Drink' depending on where needle is dropped. The grooves meet for the body of the song. Matte finish on Side B, giving the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record.

This actually appeals to me! C'mon, Jack knows what he's doing with his own pressing plant and all that - going after the serious vinyl trainspotters who gotta have numerous editions of the same album with slightly different coloured vinyls.... ah....

Anyway great album.

Yeah that's the one. I don't even know anyone that has a turntable that plays at 78rpm...except perhaps our very own Semisynthetic  I must admit I was tempted with this, purely on a collectors point of view, but the mixed reviews have put me off somewhat. May have to reconsider if it's as good as you say.

it's a good, quiet pressing. and that hologram is pretty cool. I'm still not so sure bout music, though. I'm finding it a bit of mixed bag. Couple of good country songs and some nervous proggish blues rockers. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Sounds very interesting! The last "double dipped disc" I heard was a Monty Python recording......Yeah, I will like to obtain this one. HOLOGRAMS? What is wrong with you people? Even if it is "Cricket Noises of South America", it is COOL! I might even PLAY IT! :D

This may be JUST the disc you need; I have only a few....They contain NO HOLOGRAMS, not even a single track in MONO and NOTHING at ANY RPM. Perfect for Vinyl "Super Purists" who destest the Unusual. :D Of course I am kidding around; However, these ARE very interesting; 6" discs made to "spin your own".

For the BOLDER, but pre-HOLOGRAM ERA, we have Rowdy singing Cowboy Songs; something more REASONABLE. Clint Eastwood from 1962, and the T.V. Program RAWHIDE, made famous by the "Dead Kennedy's"...that IS right, isn't it? :D (I did not think "late 19th Century Cowboys" wore wristwatches), but this is 1962 MUSIC, not JUST History!....on the Cameo Parkway label, strangely, this copy is from the UK.

Can't quote all the great things written in the last few posts but briefly:

"Time is short and art is long..."

Semi! Holograms are cool indeed.

Shines - all I would do is rip the vinyl through Audacity and use the handy 78rpm convertor - apparently it's a real garage basement tune.

Beaker - yes. The backing vocals are classy and add something to his voice that I think he needs. It's only 40 minutes long, but after blasting this one several times in the car I've grown to love it. The Zeppelin-esque blasts of Jack's mental lead guitar are worth dying for - almost! - and the country flavours throughout are fantastic. Some beautiful pedal steel.

'Would You Fight For My Love' switches between recordings of his all male and female bands recorded in different rooms playing the same song.... What a concept.

And lastly while it's all about Exile for me at the moment (and forever) I've never heard such a close approximation of that vibe in the song tellingly called 'Just One Drink' (!).

Even the way his overdubbed backing vocal - as loud as the lead - unmistakably sounds like classic Mick & Keith.

I have one remaining Amazon voucher left from Xmas and due to the lack of a record shop in several hundred miles I think I'll need to get this on vinyl...

Re: Last five albums/lp's you bought?

Post by beaker73 »

I've listened to the digital version on my ipod and that has a different running order than the 'ultra lp' and seems to flow a bit better as an album than the vinyl running order. I just need to hear it more often, which is difficult, cause the first few plays didn't sit well with ms Beaker
It did however make me go through the white stripes back catalogue again, which is always a good thing 8)

Yes, but my Modern 78 Turntable, which was made in the same fashion as my best Custom 33 1/3 AND 45 rpm Turntables, is a "stand alone player"; ONLY 78 rpm; in the past, "console" players, of which few are NOT "record lathes", had all 3 speeds, and some have 16rpm! So this means to play this new LP will require no Less than 2 of my best turntables! (the OTHER turntables are set at 33 1/3 or 45, but with a flip of a switch and monitoring of the household current, can be adjusted to very accurately play both speeds on either turntable). I certainly would not play the disc on my "HIS MASTERS VOICE", or on the 1917 Brunswick! I have a small collection of Turntables by Era, but I would not play a new, modern disc on any of them; they are "record players", not Turntables - with all the foibles that helped to destroy recordings from the 1940's ON!

I just open the window a little;
I can never be sure of what is playing, except that it will be the LATEST version of "Caucophany For Woodlands Wildlife at Night Time", In Various Natural Symphonic Movements! Beautiful, and when I am able to venture outside, it is SURROUND SOUND PLUS! But generally, there are rarely any Cricket solos, as a rule :D

Have you ever heard of "The Grasshopper's Ball and Butterfly Feast"? That is GREAT! I haven't had a chance to hear that LP in ages. Very fun stuff.

I splurged on the "ultra LP"; no matter what I actually listen to, THIS DISC will, not long from now, be very much like the Picture Discs of Monastaries and "Granada" Disc of Enrico Caruso. It is still COOL. YET ANOTHER 33rpm LP that has a single 78rpm Track is MOBY GRAPE's WOW! FROM 1968; w/ "Just Like Gene Autry; A Foxtrot" with contributions by !Arthur Godfrey! Who, (I learned later), was much more far-out of the "square scene" than the public, and "HIS FANS" ever knew! But I digress. :D

More from the Super "BEEFHEART" Collection; I obtained these discs and Picture Sleeves today; I am using the Photos sent me. Firstly: Pachuco Cadaver; a French release, which is supposed to be as nice as the "DIDDY WAH DIDDY" I received; and secondly, a VERY RARE withdrawn disc; (Some of these went missing - who knows how?) BUT I DO know that John Peel was cited as having snagged a copy! And why not? A 4-song Promo Only A&M EP from 1966, never released, unplayed, and extremely obscure by anyone's standards.

With such additions,
I am getting ever closer to my Ideal Musical "Box Set" - "Dance Music for the (Technically) Criminally Insane"

Which reminds me; I DID order the Jack White disc of Holographic and 3-speed, double-groove Recording.

And ALWAYS wanting to keep up to date, here is a Very Nice copy of "OVER THERE" sung by Enrico Caruso, 1918, a 1-sided 12" Victrola (USA) disc in English and French. An Iconic Song of WWI. (By George M. Cohan)
