hi folks - I found this forum through the facebook pointer. I have been looking for the Zurich tracks in lossless audio forever! Anyone out there able to point me in the right direction, or help me out? Also interested to know if any DS live shows are out there, as I haven't come across any in the last few years. Most unhelpful that there are a bunch of bands out there with the same name. Had my hopes dashed a few times. - lol.

I do have the STV Box show on VHS, I just need to get it transferred to see what the quality is like.

Thanks.

Someone on the Dark Star FB page mentioned that the 2nd CD of jams wasn't unzipping correctly. Just in case, here's a link to a folder containing unzipped files. Let me know if this doesn't work, not tried to use the mediafire folder structure before.

holy crack monkeys, you guys are heroes. i never thought i'd ever get anywhere near the Meanwhile Gardens stuff - let alone that Dark Star had anything smothered by EMI. most of the earlier links on this thread have died, but what i have managed to get I'm thoroughly looking forward to listening to over the next few days. i'd love to track down the Bickers versions of MG as well, but i don't want to push my luck.... karma to you all. and if they ever release MG before the bloody financial journalists finally disembowel HMV, i'll be making sure it's model-stocked in my shop....

Absolutely. I'm only distributing here. Without spunder we wouldn't have these juicy Dark Star nuggets!

I was lucky enough to pick up the Bickers MG stuff a good 8-9 years ago now from a very kind soul on the Cardiacs mailing list. The 2nd CD of odds and ends from the MG/Barn Sessions were made available to me a couple of years back by someone who runs a Levitation Facebook page (http://www.myspace.com/levitation23). That page has never really had much traffic so it's wonderful to see so many on here with a keen interest in all things Levitation/Dark Star.

Drummer supreme David Francolini is shortly to take delivery of these Levitation live recordings. With the aim of making his archive as complete as possible, i would love to hear from anyone who can add to the list. There are thought to be around a dozen more bootlegs out there, somewhere....

I cannot possibly say what Mr Francolini might do with his archive, but i can guarantee any contributions will be delivered to him with loving care.

It's Easter. Let Levitation rise from the dead! :) :D :)

just been digging in the attic and found all the levitation vinyl i have. (yes! i have a deck again!) everything up to and including Even When Your Eyes Are Open, i think. so if at some point anyone is in dire need of b-sides, i should be able to convert em and fling em up somewhere (can't guarantee click/hiss free yet - haven't played these pups since....umm....1999?).

Thanks Danicus - what a burst of activity there's been of late. Let's hope it bodes well in terms of getting interest in an official MG release.

Great to see Bob White contributing, and that even he is a little unsure about some tracks!

Hey, I signed up here to say thanks so much for this unreleased Dark Star stuff!! Dave sent me a copy Zurich in the mail a few years back, it didn't have Valentine or Roman Road on though.. so I was chuffed to find these extras, not to mention the 2 discs of jams and outtakes! What a treat!! Thanks again! Sim, I was wondering if I could send you a couple of blank CDRs so I can have them lossless? Do you also have the CD of Zurich with Roman Road and Valentine? I tried to PM you, but as I have just signed up it wouldn't let me sorry.
I remember Dave saying Dark Star were planning on bringing out some leftovers, be it Zurich mastered, or a live DVD, or remastered stuff etc.. that was a year or two ago now.. Still hoping!!
Cheers

I don't have access to a CD copy of Zurich unfortunately, only have the mp3s myself too.

Evening all
I joined this forum because i have loved Levitation since I saw them supporting the Ozric Tentacles at The Venue in New Cross which i think was about August 91. Also thanks a lot for the Dark Star extras. I never got to see them I'm afraid to say even though i had the chance and regret it now. I did see Levitation every time they played in London and they were some of the best gigs i have ever seen. I was at the Astoria when they supported the Cardiacs, i think someone mentioned a gig at The Venue possibly a year later, so would love to hear some of these bootlegs,

I was also at their last gig ever, also at the Venue (i see a pattern emerging) in which Bic threw his guitar onto the stage and stormed off in a strop at the end and Laurence through Kaleidoscopes into the audience. I still have one i scrambled for i think. I have a lot of fan club mailers, news letters and some other bits and peices in my piles of junk at home. Plus a letter from Bic explaining why the tape i had received was backwards and sounded positively satanic. Happy to scan this stuff in for the archive is anyone is interested.

Nice to meet like minded people, i'll have to dig out all my old vinyl now as well as i havn't played it in years.

Hope this thread hasn't quietened down too much. Just been watching the Boston Arms gig on youtube, Fantastic I did miss that one which is a shame. What i always loved about Levitation gigs was you heard tracks they hadn't recorded or released yet, so if you wanted to hear them, you had to go to the gig. which was a little annoying since the songs were now trapped in your head and you couldn't hear them again unless you went to the gig. Great days.

Cheers for all your hard work, and i hope there is more to come

Firstly, Hello!!

I can't believe that I've only just discovered this Levitation thread - on a Spiritualized board registered on a German website!!!

Over the years I've met a good number of people over the internet who have one thing in common - they're all massive fans of Levitation. What started as a "Do you have the Bickers version of Meanwhile Gardens?" question has led to email exchanges running into full discussions of (amongst other things) many other bands. It's been a blast, believe me.

Anyway, in a nutshell I'm a long-time fan of Levitation. Unfortunately, it now looks like the vast majority of the links (if not all) on this thread are now long-dead. I feel like not only have I missed the bus but that the bus was full of rainbows!!.

Fortunately, I have the Bickers MG tracks from several years back. I'm pretty much there with the back-catalogue too. I have the Aussie MG CD and 'Chain By Day' CD Single, the 'King of Mice' CD Single and the fanclub cassettes amongst the usual UK items.

What really interests me is a lot of the live stuff. Besides a couple of VHS tapes which I have somewhere under my stairs and one of the Radio 1 sessions on cassette, I have none of the live concerts.

If any board members are able to help out, I'd be more than happy to reciprocate.

Levitation related....

Forthcoming release on my label - Pinhead Nation - Luck Had Nothing To Do With It. Produced and mixed by Bic Hayes so I hope this passes the spam test. The Pinheads played with Levitation (or was it Panixphere?) too. Gideon Coe played a track on BBC6 last night.

"The latest Onomatopoeia Records release will be out on Feb 27th 2012. The album has been 17 years in the making and it’s time has finally come. The 13 tracks are punky, poppy, angry, funny, fast, loud, quiet, intense and always changing. They are folklore songs to drive mad men sane.

You can stream the whole album for free on a temporary Soundcloud page.
Distribution is being handled by Cargo so you should have no problem getting hold of it from record shops, Amazon, iTunes and all the other usual places on vinyl, CD or download. You can also buy direct from the label.

Tracklisting:
Jail On Wheels
Model Citizen
Gardener’s Question Time
Saturday Song
I Love My Wife
Ground Floor Flat
Fetish
Tetchy
Bantam Dreams
Make Constructive Use Of Your Leisure
Years Of Neglect
Park And Ride
March Of The Pinheads

Luck Had Nothing To Do With It was produced and mixed by Christian ‘Bic’ Hayes, who also plays keyboards and contributes handclaps and backing vocals, and mixed by Tim Smith, who also contributes handclaps and backing vocals.

It’s fair to say that without the simple but inspirational message of Make Constructive Use Of Your Leisure that this record label may never have existed".

Email onoman@onophonic.com for more info or to join email list.

Word is that a reissue is imminent - due this spring, if not earlier! Woo! :D

Slightly longer story: Bic has recently done a radio session where he talks a little about it, plays a track (Bodiless), and discusses the reissue. See here: https://archive.org/details/TheRealMusicClub105_060115 fun starts about the 7:40 mark.

This interview is really funny reading.

"Saunders: I'd get a call at five in the morning, and Terry'd go, "Hello?" And I'd go, "Hello?" And he'd go, "What do you want?" And I'd go, "Terry, you rang me". And he was like, "Oh, did I? Oh, sorry, man" and put the phone down. There was a lot of bad drugs involved, the wrong kind of drugs. I certainly wasn't an angel in that respect myself. But when you start talking about Class A drugs and the kind of people that started to be around them, at that point, I was like, "This is not for me, I really don't want to do this. It's too scary, basically." Frankly, I'd say he was mentally ill at that point.

Bickers: I don't think it was particularly severe…"

Nope, still there.

There's an EP for Record Store Day called "Never Odd or Even".

I believe the tracks are from the "Meanwhile Gardens" sessions, but I can't ascertain whether they've got Bickers doing the vocals.

I finally got to hear the Terry Bickers version of "Meanwhile Gardens" last week and it is absolutely bloody brilliant.

Can't believe those recordings haven't seen the light of day before, and it seems a real shame they disintegrated the way they did. They sound like a band at the height of their powers on it and I can't wait for the vinyl this summer. "King of Mice", "Food For Powder", "Imagine the Sharks", all epic stuff.

Not sure if Natty heard the new release versions but the Bickers versions have been available for a few years now from various sources. From what I understand they've been remastered for the official release though so should sound even better. Certainly the RSD ep sounded much better than the files I have (despite a fade out on Never Odd or Even).

It wasn't the new remasters I heard.

I know the original recordings have been floating around the internet for a good while but I've never managed to find them until recently.

Yeah, the EP sounded lovely. Hoping for more of the same.

The Bickers Meanwhile Gardens i have is a double subtitled 'summer' and 'autumn'. was this genuinely how the band at the time saw it or was this cobbled together by fans as a way of incorporating lots of other unreleased jams etc (it sounds that way in places) ...

The fan-circulated summer and autumn collections were really a cobbled together mixture. Some tracks were unfinished and may have been intended as b-sides for shelved EPs (Twice). I think Cutwater was also on there which was on the free 7" given out with Need For Not. Also some of the tracks may actually have been from the Barn Sessions which were post-Bickers but pre Steve Ludwin.

I don't think it was ever clear what the split of tracks were to be on the two Summer and Autumn albums. Given that albums back then were shorter it could well be that the new MG release + the RSD EP represent all the tracks that we're going to be released on MG. Actually a bit disappointed that Evergreen is on there as that was already released on the Even When Your Eyes.... single.

I kind of thought as much. Some of the stuff sounds like demos, it's very raw indeed, there's the live segueing of "Mantra" into "Twice" and a few other bits that obviously weren't going to feature on either or had already been released. Some of the titles are wrong, too.

They were planned to be mid-price, IIRC, so about 7 tracks, which was the usual length of a mid-price mini-LP back then, on each seems quite possible.

Ah, gotcha. Collected the bootleg versions from the kind shares when this thread started. Looking forward to the remastered version.

Looking back thru this thread I'd forgotten how much discussion we had about what the track lists for the 2 albums were going to be. Loads of discussion too on the Facebook page with a lot of great input from Andy Broome in particular (who I think posted as Duckstab on this thread).

Lots of tracks probably were works in progress and don't seem to exist in recorded form (other than live versions available on YouTube) - Big Chord, Undercarriage etc. These could have been intended for the second MG album.

Also a recent thread on the FB page reminded me that Sacred Lover was originally recorded during the Need For Not sessions (also is actually an old Colenso Parade song, hence the writing credits on the Flashback page for the new MG release).
