Re: Latest LP set to arrive?

Post by semisynthetic »

This LP should be interesting; of several Verlaine and/ or Hell recordings I have purchased "ignorant and unknowingly"; Recordings I thought were likely ROIO, they were, in fact, all Private Pressings by Verlaine OR Hell, and of exceptional quality, usually in Editions of 200 - 500 copies. These (mostly) have minimalist Jacket Art, (with (2) exceptions so far). Frankly, these Special Editions were each a bit pricey - so I believe this LP will likely turn out to be a "bootleg", a ROIO, with a $20 price tag, this will not be an artist's "special" Private Pressing, but if the LPs pressing is well done, who cares.

I have just learned this IS a ROIO, #92/ 500; Pressed on a Yellow Marble Media, the LP is new and unplayed; The Label, I have been told, usually produces fine pressings. I am such an Eno fan, I did happily take the chance to see what would show up.
I used the image sent.
I cannot help but think of "Tele'phon" (and other spellings of the same); for like "Telephone", there are "multiple" bands entitled "Television"; each VERY DIFFERENT "channels" of Television to be sure.

ADDENDUM: I found this information awhile later than the initial Posting; it may be useful and informative.
TELEVISION
"SKETCHES - THE DEMOS 1974-1975" LP; pressed in 2013.
LIMITED EDITION OF 500 NUMBERED COPIES on Yellow Marble - LABEL: Arkain Filloux. Made in Belgium. "Scarce ROIO"; other releases with differing Jackets are also available.
Condition: New but not sealed. Features a one color hand screened cover; custom printed labels as well. This LP contains the hitherto unreleased Television demos recorded by Brian Eno. These versions are different than the ones found on the "Marquee Moon" Official release; Rated as "An Excellent pressing". If the jacket were Brownish in tint rather than white, it would most likely contain a regular black vinyl pressing instead of the marble.

Track listing:
Prove It/ Friction/ Venus De Milo/ Double Exposure/ Marquee Moon/ Hard On Love/ Careful/ Prove It/ Fire Engine/ Little Johnny Jewel

Some wonderful pieces from lilmoxie.com & dockellis.com - a few assorted pieces from the past.
Very Pretty assorted color vinyl recordings and a very nice Pic Disc. Below is a somewhat incomplete listing and descriptions of many of these recordings.

1. Autumn of Paerkwood - Ik tsuarpok Deep Distance 2015 Winter; LTD 300 LP.
2. Roxy Music - Why do you think I'm a Funky Chick? ROIO 1977 Stoned Record Label; listed as Sweden. A 2-LP Set.
3. Lesa & Ross GPS123 Summer of 2015 LTD 500 LP.
4. XAM Tone System LP; DD/GPS.
5. Pharaoh Chromium "Chromosphere" Very Nice Pic Disc #29/300 DD36.
6. Long Distance Poison - "Human Program" DD35 2015 Spring LTD 300.
7. Cosmic Ground 2 DD40 Summer 2015 LTD 500 very pretty.
8. Melodeon Theurgy DD41 Autumn 2015 very pretty.
9. the cult of free love "Love is all there is"/ the wrestler "european orange" SPLIT DD39 10" disc.
10. Hologram Teen 7" Stereo 45rpm.
11. The Hanging Stars 7" GPS 128 Autumn 2015 LTD 500.
12. Matt "MV" Valentine 7" GPS 126 Summer 2015 LTD 500.

13. Several 1920's 10" Shellac Sleeves; c. 1925-1926.
14. Several 1920's to 1940 Photographs of various musicians and their bands; a few candid shots.
15. (3) N- Bessie Smith 10" Shellacs in correct sleeves; fantastic.
16. "The History of Sound to Date"; sealed 1956 Mono LP; Decca "Not for Sale". A single LP reviewing types of media and music; Decca is a somewhat later label, but from the track listing, appear to have done a good job considering a multi-Box Set would still not be enough to tackle the topic.

What's this one like? I was reading an interview with her in Loud & Quiet and it sounds really interesting. Gets a 9/10 review as well.

This is ace, or at least the bits I've heard are. I've not yet managed to indulge in the full 8 hours (downloaded from Radio 3 iplayer). Did you get the flacs or the CDs?
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Anniversary 3CD/DVD/2LP box. It usually costs a fortune, but I got one from Amazon Italy for £27 including postage to the UK. And it's in mint condition. Well happy :D

Wow - that's a bargain. I believe the vinyl edition is a repress of Teo Macero's original mix of the album using vintage delays etc - notably different from the digital masters. Great find!

I bought it from iTunes, so it's in their AAC format; £24.99 for the full box-set. Works like this are tailor-made for digital release; I'm surprised other artists haven't taken advantage of the ultra-long uninterrupted composition lengths possible* (Eno, I'm looking at you!) I've listened to the first hour or so a few times, and yesterday the first four hours in one sitting. It's been wonderful thus far...

*All's I can think of off the top of my head are the Flaming Lips' 6- and 24-hour songs, and my version of La Monte Young's "The Well-Tuned Piano", which is five hours...

You are so right! I was fortunate enough to see several of his shows from 1986-1988, and he was fantastic! Whether in a tiny "Fire-Trap-Club" or a larger, (but still not too large a venue), he was so good. I added this (along with much more on this page) to my "Get List".

Just picked up the new Mark Lanegan- One Way Street LP box set.
Holy shit this sounds awesome. First Lp played is Whiskey For The Holy Ghost and it sounds 10x better than the orginal. Probably because this is now given a double Lp treatment.
Looking forward to the other 4 LPs this weekend.
Also the Bob Dylan Basement Tapes Raw Lp box. Not for Dylan so much as this is what spawned The Band. Fascinating.
Love those credit vouchers.
One other purchase is an original Faces- Ooh La La w/moveable face US LP. This also sounds immense on vinyl.

Last weekend, before the terrible news about David Bowie, this late Soviet Era sealed copy of "Starman" (1990) was one of several LPs and singles I was about to add to Bowie's Cabinet of Music - of LPs and Singles, anyway. I am still so saddened that he is gone; and heard on the BBC, how Eno received the last email message Bowie sent him on the Friday before.

There were several interesting pieces I only recently obtained, but I thought this LP in particular shows just how popular his music is and has been all over the World. The last track is an interesting choice, "Lady Stardust". (But frankly, almost any of these tracks were, at that time, "new" to Melodya). All of these tracks are excellent choices.

The totality of the extensive writing on the Jacket Reverse is in Russian, (w/ only the Titles translated into English on a Type Written sheet by the collector, enclosed in an outer resealable protective sleeve); this "Russian Only" is usual for 7" discs, but most Soviet era Melodya LPs have (only) the song Titles in Russian and English on the Jacket or inner sleeve, with exceptions for propaganda during the era "of openness". It is an interesting example.

Side 1). "Space Oddity", "God Knows I'm Good", "All The Madmen", "Black Country Rock"
Side 2). "Five Years", "Soul Love", "Moonage Daydream", "Starman" and "Lady Stardust"

There were also several 1920's 78rpm discs of Jazz and Era Music. On the Diva, Early Victor, and Columbia Labels.

Couple of sweet purchases winging their way to me as I type:

Destruction Unit - Negative Feedback Resistor - Limited Edition with Photo Book (Sacred Bones Records + Ascetic House) 300 numbered copies. With a matte black cover by Ascetic House, hand numbered and sealed with golden lacquer. Black vinyl with a Destruction Unit poster inside the sleeve. I already have this on red vinyl so God knows what I'm doing spending just under £40 on this extra copy, BUT it's very limited, I've coveted it since it's release (but haven't seen it at a reasonable price before), and it looks a treat. http://www.discogs.com/Destruction-Unit ... se/7485862

King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard - Float Along Fill Your Lungs / Oddments - double vinyl repress on orange and magenta vinyls, like this pretty pic shows https://www.instagram.com/p/9-PceCzdGw/

Earth - Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method - double vinyl repress

David Bowie - Blackstar - first press vinyl

Hey Colossus - Radio Static High - red vinyl

Plus the new Daughter album on CD for my lady.

^ those are some nice titles.

My local shop got one of these, Deep Trip
http://www.discogs.com/Destruction-Unit ... se/4866727
Limited edition of 200 hand-numbered copies in deluxe packaging, with silk-screened wrap-around sleeve, 23"x44" poster, wax-sealed.

Tempting.

I need Blackstar. I'm not convinced the 2nd press will be any different from the first. In fact, I have read that it will be the same. I guess we'll see. But I'm sure not spending over $30 to find out; in fact, $30 is too expensive for me. I'll bite at $20, even if it takes a year for it to drop.

“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness

'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.

'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.

'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”

so true. because so many people are offloading their CD collections they are dirt cheap now. I am only too happy to take advantage of that.
part of me would love to make the move to vinyl but I want to keep hold of my bank balance/free space/sanity.
for me CDs are a good compromise between convenience whilst also having a physical object.

My local favorite / favourite record shop also carries some CDs. they just reduced all of them to $1 each. It's a great way to pick up new music, to try something different. At worst I can give it away or sell it for $1.

Re: Last few LPs / 12" Singles / DVD-VHS / 78rpm

Post by semisynthetic »

While laid up a few days recently, I searched for sealed LPs, 7" & 12" singles of David Bowie; some for spares as I often do with my favorite Artists, and Promo copies from differing countries of origin, and sealed Waxes; I had been surprised just how many releases here and there I'd missed (at their time of release), but I've since obtained as many of them as I could (so far). I found, to my surprise, quite a few additional copies from Poland and earlier releases the former Jugoslavia. I am still not quite used to seeing Poland listed in the EU; from years of "iron curtain" collecting all manner of interesting things I suppose.

I am still really kicked in the stomach over this loss; one of my very favorite artists. Such a Brilliant and truly Interestingly multifaceted person. I watched "The Man Who Fell to Earth" the other night, followed by the "Lazarus" (and other Blackstar PROMO Videos). Just gutted.

R. WYATT "Comicopera" 2xLP; UK Etched Poem on Side D by Brian Eno 2007 sealed.

DAVID BOWIE 7" White Vinyl; RSD 2013 "The Stars are Out Tonight"/ "Where are We Now"; pressed in POLAND; + a 2nd UK copy, Dft. Packaging; both sealed.

DAVID BOWIE, "Star", A Promotional Issue-White Wax, (HOLLAND) 12" Single, 3-Song EP sealed.
(Plus a 2nd copy from the UK on White Vinyl; White Promo Label). 1978; sealed.
DAVID BOWIE "Continuing Story of Major Tom" UK Promo Only EP; 1980 vinyl 12" (spare).
DAVID BOWIE "Up the Hill Backwards"/ "Crystal Japan"; 1980; (w/ STAMPS designed by Bowie); PD-12249 EP 12" sealed (spare).

DAVID BOWIE-BRIDGE BENEFIT + TIN MACHINE- DVD. New. w/ Booklet.

DAVID BOWIE "Bowie" A Very Early Bowie LP - unique-to-Japan Release Only; w/ Obi Strip; sealed.
DAVID BOWIE "LOVE IS LOST" 12" WHITE VINYL LTD. 5000 copies; dft. versions. sealed.
DAVID BOWIE "Nothing Has Changed" UK Gatefold (+ PROMO Info Sheets); sealed 2013 (spare).
DAVID BOWIE "The Next Day"; UK 2LP set PLUS (1) "unique to Japanese CD Set"; sealed (spare).
DAVID BOWIE "Tonight" 12" Single 1984 USA PROMO Pressing; sealed. (spare).

DAVID BOWIE PROMO DVDs; (3) music videos: Lazarus, Blackstar & Valentine's Day. (2) copies. Released 01/08/16.
DAVID BOWIE "Heathen" 2CD; FRENCH; unique-to-France Release; Hype Stickers in 3 languages. w/ extra live tracks; Booklet; sealed.
DAVID BOWIE: FIVE YEARS - BBC TWO - 90 MINUTE FILM DOCUMENTARY DVD; UK; sealed.
DAVID BOWIE (3) records: "Blackstar" Ltd. 2015 LP, RSD "Sue" / "Tis a Pity She was a Whore"/ RSD "Kingdom Come" 7" white vinyl. All 3 are sealed. (+1 Pre-Order Blackstar); 2015; sealed; (spare copies).

DAVID BOWIE "Jazzin' For Blue Jean" (VHS) 1984 Sony - Julien Temple; (spare) Great Video; I haven't yet seen (this Video on DVD); Very Fun 1984 Music Video/ short film.
DAVID BOWIE "Absolute Beginners" PROMO 12" 45 RPM sealed 1986 Virgin [V-19205].
DAVID BOWIE "CHINA GIRL" PROMO White Label 12" UK; 1983; sealed.

DAVID BOWIE "BlackStar" Clear Vinyl Ltd. Die Cut OOP 1st LP; sealed. 2015
DAVID BOWIE "Blackstar" Black vinyl 180g Vinyl LP Die Cut OOP 2015 1st; sealed. (spare). 2015
DAVID BOWIE "TONIGHT" EMI PROMO LP SJ-17138 MASTERDISK; Gold Promo Stamp; sealed. 1984.

Above are only a very few examples from an enormously talented, Creative Artist who I'll miss more than I had ever imagined; I most sincerely admire his Music, Talent and will cherish his Memory.

Plus several 1920's 78's, this example was exceptional for quality and obscurity.
RUDY VALLEE on the earlier 78 rpm Diva Label 2724-G: "Lady Whipporwhill"/ "Right Out of Heaven"; 1927 Exceptional N- Pressing in the correct sleeve.

RUDY VALLEE Hollywood Rhythm - The Best of Big Band & Swing (DVD) "Rudy Vallee's Musical Hospital" 1932 + many other Musical Short Videos by a variety of Artists; this is a FANTASTIC set of History, Comedy, Music and the Evolution of the "Music Video"; from 1929-1939. Louis Armstrong and Mae Questel (voice of Betty Boop) are in the Vallee Video, "Musical Hospital; another piece ahead of its time, and still entertaining. This DVD is now OOP, but worth the effort to find if you enjoy not only assorted music, but Film History. These "Musical Shorts" preceded the Main Attraction at the Movies from c. 1929 through the 1950's, they were often a way to show off new talent and hear the public's response.

On Order:
THE MOVE "Tonight"/ "Don't mess me Up"; an "as new", unique Belgian Pressing on the Harvest label w/ Unique PS; 1971. (I am so used to seeing "The Move" on the $tateside label - likely because so many of their 7" singles I've found are uniquely Portuguese). I ALWAYS buy Harvest label discs, there is usually SOME good reason to do it. Portuguese discs are worth a look because so many early pressings are still found in unbelievably lovely condition. It really is uncanny; - is it because of those great fitting little "clam shell" innersleeves, or have I just been very lucky with my sources; or did people enjoy their music enough to take better care of the recordings more seriously at a certain place and Time? I don't know. I do know that over the years, several people have consistently sent me some of the most incredible recordings I own, all "as new", and very often, uniquely Portuguese!

Film - "When the Wind Blows" - 1986; sealed DVD.
Film - "The Hunger". DVD. 1976 Film; more recent Criterion Release. sealed.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Blues in the Night"; 78rpm 1sided Test Pressing; 1929 Columbia "Magic Notes".
BESSIE SMITH "Done Done me Wrong Blues"; 78rpm 1sided "Review" 1923. Columbia? (white label).
RUDY VALLEE "Blues in the Night" RCA "bat wing" Label; 1931 "Test Pressing". Commercial Label.

TIMOTHY LEARY "Turn On, Tune In and Drop Out"; 1st pressing; sealed.
TALKING HEADS "The Overload"; 12" Single; Promo - (same both sides); 1978; sealed.
THE STRANGLERS "The Nubiles - Cocktail Version" 1 sided Fan Club; sealed. I believe this is the first 1 sided example I've come across. New. c. 1977.
THE STRANGLERS EP - French "Don't Bring Harry" - 1st Japanese Pressing, OBI; Insert; sealed. (spare).

THE REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM 8" "Square Flexi-Disc"; 1957; "Reverend Billy Graham talks to Teenagers about Sex"; [still sealed in bag w/ "Things to Remember", and a sealed 7" 45rpm Single 1-sided vinyl disc of "Amazing Grace". (the flexi-disc is a "spare", but these (2) discs sealed as a set is new to me). The 1st acquisition was "found in a crated collection of 78rpm Gospel Recordings"; and this "Set" was a gift from a Clergyman to whom I had once mentioned the "8 inch Square Flexi", he thought I should have this "Set". Very Nice fellow.

GREGORIAN CHANTS s/t; loaded with info and dates, but I could not read them from the Photos. 1973; Mastersound Pressing. Sealed.

DAVID BOWIE "Blackstar"; CD; Brazilian LTD ED. (6000 copies). Most have a Sticker in Portuguese; the Disc is made in Brazil; Argentina is also releasing a "slightly" unique variant, pressed in that country, also in limited numbers.

DAVID BOWIE "LOVE-IS-LOST"; LTD 5000; 12" White Vinyl-New; sealed. (spare). I received very nice Photos of the packaging; really well done, simple but attractive in White Embossed Jacket. + (1) Additional variant copy from Germany.

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI OST original 1957 Mono; sealed. (+ the 1st 1963 "Stereo" OST; sealed).

Promotional Data Sheets for TALKING HEADS 1st LP.

Bing Crosby "Blue of the Night"; 1934; Test Pressing. Decca Label.

ATOMIC WARFARE DATA & FOOTAGE. Declassified information in Film & Chart form on DVD.

Rudy Vallée; assorted Sheetmusic - signed by the Printers, Song Writers and others in Hollywood TO Mr. Vallée! Unusual set of (5) pieces I found just 2-3 months ago.

As soon as I am home again, I intend to write a piece on Rudy Vallée's "We're Taking Off", a Private-Release-Only 78rpm disc that discusses fictitious activities from "a British Aerodrome" in what the announcer refers to as "a Flight into Fantasy". This unusual and Dark recording was not the "regular", commercial-oriented "Dance" piece; but showed Vallée's abhorrence of War, and in particular, the then recent use of the Atomic Bomb; this very obscure, autographed 12" Disc is another example of Vallée being ahead of his time, and brilliant at what he did. I mentioned this recording some time ago, but when I heard it on the Brunswick Gramophone, it was an incredible piece I wanted to delve into and describe with more detail. I wish I could place this recording on this SITE; but many things are now on "Hold" for awhile, including some music images I had hoped to share by now.

Lots of good stuff coming out at the moment. Last five albums purchased:

Still in a Dream - A Story of Shoegaze: lots of old favourites, and plenty of bands that I don't know. Good stuff!
L'Aurore - Yeti Lane (preordered) : I think their last album is fantastic, this third one sounds intriguing.
Human Ceremony - Sunflower Bean :Really enjoying this.Heard a song on youtube and bought the album - not disappointed.
Hidden City - The Cult: not got into this yet.Not sure.......
Saint Etienne Present Songs For The Carnegie Deli : I always like these compilations. Maybe not as good as the Central Park one, but still a decent listen.

Jefferson Airplane- Surrealistic Pillow
Bill Orcutt & Jacob Felix Heule- Colonial Donuts (shit hot jazz, this one! some wild electric guitar duelling with drums)
Expo 70- Frozen Living Elements (I think I have heard this band mentioned here before? spacey drone guitar stuff, right up my street)

it looks like my comment above has come back to bite me on the bum. for some inexplicable reason, the new Six Organs album is not available on CD. It is, however, available on cassette. Try and work that one out.

"The Laughing Gnome" w/ "The Gospel According to Tony Day"; Denmark Only Sleeve.
This is the best example of the Danish only release of David Bowie's "The Laughing Gnome" w/ "The Gospel According to Tony Day" I've seen, (the sleeve has since been smoothed absolutely flat), the disc is Fantastic, and "as new". The Brown Deram Label is printed off center, but that seems a very minor error for such a limited, special pressing. I have a real love for Danish and Dutch releases, especially the earlier 7" singles and EP's - they are almost always special in some way, always very limited in number, and unique to their country of origin, but these early discs now are very difficult to find in this condition; This "1967" recording was pressed in England, but the wrap-around Pic Sleeve was made in (and for) Denmark only. If only these little discs had those wonderful Portuguese inner sleeves, they would be nearly perfect! Still, the rice paper inner-sleeves used here are very kind to the vinyl; the additional heavyweight protective sleeve added by the collector I obtained this from was also very helpful. The reverse of the sleeve is blank, which is not at all unusual for Denmark (or Portugal or Sweden). I wasn't able to learn who provided the artwork and/ or B&W insert-drawing of the Pic Sleeve, or even an approximate number released.

I ordered this copy based on: 1). buying from someone I had purchased other obscure Danish recordings from; 2). quality of the disc (and sleeve); 3). Country of Origin, and lastly, the sadly ironic B&W drawing insert of a very young David Bowie; cigarette in hand, coffee, capsules, and the rest. Of all the examples I have of this Happy, silly, little Gnome song, I believe this must be my favorite variant (not discounting the UK Original), but not exactly for the "usual" reasons. An interesting, variant release that I feel very fortunate to have finally found, especially after looking for so many years, turning down lesser quality copies.

"The Bridge on the River Kwai" 1957 OST 1st release; Sealed; NO mention of "Academy Award Winning Soundtrack"; #CL1100; Columbia label, MONO; (this is the 3rd copy on the last 2 pages, but I really like Soundtracks - when I can find such Classic film OSTs still sealed, it is hard to pass these spares by; all 3 are (essentially) Mono, for the 2nd pressing 1957 OST "Stereo" is really an early, relatively primitive attempt at an "Electronically Rechanneled for Stereo" recording than would be heard on other recordings for a few more years; for this era, on the Columbia label, is not close to "Stereo" at all). Nevertheless, these early pressings are excellently made on very heavy, high quality vinyl, and they sound fantastic; these early OSTs are more easily available still sealed than you might think, (and other than this 1st pressing MONO 1957 copy) are often very reasonably priced. Despite the "fake stereo", the later 1963 Copy, a greatly improved "Electronically Rechanneled for Stereo" disc really does fill the Music Room (and much of the house!), using a 7.1 Sound System setup. All of these pressings were frankly better in quality than the majority of the sound systems of their era were ever intended to reproduce! It is great fun hearing these orchestral pieces and sound effects played as if in a Theatre.

DAVID BOWIE PROMO Only 5 DVD SET "of Nearly 100 Videos".
I had a chance to watch and enjoy this wonderful set of Videos, the list of which is on the previous page. The sound quality is Fantastic; you (should) receive a Promo Sheet with a set of (5) clamshell protected DVDs. This set has Incredible Videos; it provides an insight into Bowie's work quite unlike any other of the very many types of Promo Sets I've seen or heard before. I paid about $35 - $40 for the set +/-.
"The Mask" and other early pieces are better watched than described. Every one of what I thought were "exceptional" Videos were not allowed on YouTube "in country", which was the first time I have noticed such a vague "notice of terms" used to convey "you can't watch this", maybe I just never noticed. Well, anyway, you can watch, and most of the set has wonderful quality, with only a few visual and minimal audio exceptions that do not take away from the set as a whole, a couple of very early pieces and an early live track, & [(2) "Video Game" performances in particular come to mind)].
Obviously I recommend it.
NOTE: I have recently seen bootlegs of unknown quality with "similar, but different" artwork than these, yet purporting to have the same Videos; so I always ask "Does this set come with a Promo Sheet" to verify its provenance as a legitimate Promo when I buy this sort of thing. Some Promos may have been boxed up in multiple sets, and so not every set may have its very own Promo Sheet, or a store may not consider the sheet important, so caveat emptor as always.
