Rolling Boxset Thread
I love me a good boxset. yeah, yeah I know- it's often all about record companies getting another payday after the bottom has fallen out of the industry. extra track and a tacky badge. but you can't beat oodles of rare stuff from artist you admire, lovingly packaged. thought I would make an ongoing thread for this stuff.
here's some recent releases for starters..
Big Star- Complete Third
http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/ ... d-box-set/
I'm a Big Star acolyte by any means (I think much of their stuff is quite cheesy actually) but Third is a superb record (and some might actually consider it an Alex Chilton solo album). this looks pretty fine.
R.E.M.- Out Of Time deluxe
http://www.stereogum.com/1895781/r-e-m- ... ssue/news/
a curates egg of an album if ever there was one, in my opinion. some gorgeous stuff on there, but if I never hear Radio Song or Shiny Happy People it'll be too soon. after some rather half hearted reissues of the IRS albums, they seem to be finally doing it right and putting some serious content on there. Would love similar treatment for Automatic For The People.
Public Image Limited- 'Metal Box' and 'Album' super deluxe editions
http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/ ... announced/
Metal Box extras make me drool a bit, but the price tag is a bit rich for my blood..
anyone else enjoy a good boxset?
any artist you think deserve the boxset treatment who haven't had it yet?

funny!
re: boxsets- they come out, i buy them but don't then listen to everything, or maybe once on my way through. as exciting as it is to have all of these obscure tracks/remasters etc i wonder if it is really worth it?

Like anything- it depends
Was listening to my Jimi Hendrix 'purple box' in the week and it's got so much fantastic stuff on there.
Let's not forget Dylan.. Some of his best stuff is on Biograph or the Bootleg Series!!

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
Finances dictate I wont be purchasing too many box sets, but that apart the Metal Box one is sorta tempting, one of my all-time favourite albums but I`ve already bought it 3 times already, so I don`t think the extras will make me pull the trigger on it again, an itch I can resist scratching,
Way out of my price range but the Rolling Stones Mono box set looks fantastic, if somebody was to buy it for me I can assure them I would treasure and appreciate it

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
Rumours that the long-awaited Purple Rain reissue will see the light of day next year, seems a safe bet that there will be a box set version there.
I'd shell out for a box set reissue of any of Prince's 80s albums - if done properly, the additional content could be incredible (e.g. my wishlist for the Purple Rain reissue would include the album + b-sides + unreleased tracks from that era, along with material from The Time and Apollonia 6 used in the film, along with a blu-ray of the live Purple Rain VHS and other unreleased live material from those couple of years).

I would totally buy a Purple Rain box. It's gotta be on the way.

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
I have picked up two second hand recently.
Dylan Mono CD box
Beatles Mono CD box
Glad I picked up both.
Was going to buy the Verve CD boxes while over in the UK but passed on them. Instead I picked up a Screamadelica 3 CD hardcover book style box w/a live show and all the mixes at Piccadilly.
The way the £ is I am better off ordering them off Amazon UK.

You might enjoy this robust and pretty in-depth review of Be Here Now then Paul, http://thequietus.com/articles/21162-oa ... nniversary
TBH I wouldn`t mind actually having that boxset, more than an that REM - Out Of Time one anyway

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
I too have a soft spot for be here now. Nothing wrong with a little coke and studio excess. Great guitars on that record.
I am going to get the Dylan box set that has all the 1966 tour recordings. That electric set he was doing then surpasses his entire catalog with the exception of Desire and Blood on the Tracks. On Australia part of the tour he does positively 4th st and it is so damn good on my bootleg, can't wait to hear it straight off the Nagra. Just like Tom Thumbs Blues on that tour a top 5 all time song for me by any artist.
Still waiting for the pure phase box mr pierce. It had better include the live performance of slide song from Glastonbury 94. I will happily spend a ridiculous amount for this. I'll sell a kidney.

I'd love to hear the Mustique demos from the Be Here Now box.
A Purple Rain reissue was just announced, along with another best of, which will be followed by an album of unreleased material. Not a box set, but we were talking about Purple Rain earlier:

Looking forward to the bonus disc for Purple Rain (although I'm still holding out hope for a more comprehensive box - surely the record label will put one out?)

The Band's The Last Waltz is being reissued in some lush boxsets.. very little actual new content though gonna stick with my 4CD version methinks..

I got a good deal last week on 'Alpha Mike Foxtrot' by Wilco 4CDs of rarities from their first 20 yrs. I know they've gone off the boil on the recent albums, but this stuff covers their great years..

Sucker for a box set me
Recent ish include Neil Young (blue note cafe), Fleetwood Mac (Tusk) Harmonia, Cluster, Eels, Ryan Adams at Webster Hall and the Heartbreaker reissue. Mogwai ( all of them) and the one that landed yesterday...... pink floyd early years.
if she knew what this cost I would be seeking alternative living arrangements !

It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

drool- 4 CD reissue of Durutti Column's 'Domo Arigato' live album. apparently the original mix was rather hurried so they've remixed it from the ground up
https://www.piccadillyrecords.com/count ... pid=114188
and there's a big Sgt Peppers set on the way to celebrate the 50th anniversary. 2 disc version has a CD of outtakes, then there's a 6 CD version with more outtakes, remix, and documentary

I noticed that the Pink Floyd early years box is now available in individual "period" installments. I still can't really muster the nerve to spend money on CDs, though.

if there's any folk rockers in the house, there's a nice Fairport Convention boxset coming out covering the first 10 years (i.e. their prime) with lots of unreleased tracks

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
So it wasn't a boxset in the end, but the Purple Rain reissue is fantastic. The remaster sounds incredible (and was badly needed for that album), the vault disc sounds like a lost album from between 1999 and Purple Rain, the single and b-side edits disc is good to have (even though I already had most of it), and while the dvd isn't the best quality picture, the performance on it is still stunning.
I really hope there are similar projects in the works for all of the Warner Bros era albums at least.

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
from what I've heard regarding the magnitude of Prince's archives, what they should do is some sort of subscription series and gradually release the whole shebang. you could pay a subscription fee and get a new release each month. or maybe just a huge Pink Floyd-style boxset.
what will probably happen instead is that they release it in dribs and drabs, on extended versions of the albums, or dribble it out on 'new' albums on a yearly basis like they've done with Jimi Hendrix.

A liked Prince for about 2 years in the mid-80s, especially Purple Rain and Around the world in a day. I've still got the 12" of Let's Go Crazy and think the extended version of this track is great. Looking at the tracklist for the Purple Rain deluxe release it doesn't list this particualr version of Let's Go Crazy. I can't believe they wouldn't have included it. For those who have bought it, is it not on? Or is the "special dance mix" on CD3 it?

Personally, I'm pretty thrilled with this set. Despite the comments elsewhere online from super-hardcore Prince fans, I think the "2015 Paisley Park Remaster" sounds excellent. 'Take Me With U' sounds like I've always imagined it does, when it didn't really, if that makes any sense.
My early, heady experiences with this album was via a fairly scratched vinyl rip to ageing cassette, so for some time that was the version for me.
Anyway, the associated b-sides in one place is great - both versions of 'Erotic City' make the 3rd disc essential by themselves IMO.
The Vault tracks are interesting to incredible - the full length 'Computer Blue' and 'We Can Fuck' are definite, ecstatic highlights. The former is completely psychedelic and almost totally unhinged - I think the original album lost something in featuring the edit.
As I generally avoid most of the super-deluxe editions of these reissues due to budgetary concerns, can I say how refreshing it is to get a 3CD & DVD set like this for under £20? The extensive sleevenotes from The Revolution and Prince's engineer are fascinating. I'd say this is the right way to do this stuff, no need for plush boxes with stickers and t-shirts and the like really.
Now I can only hope for a similarly comprehensive reissue program for the rest of his vast catalogue...

Got the Kraftwerk blu ray 3d box. Wow a visual feast with my (proper, not crappy gig giveaways) 3d specs on. The wee man and myself watched Autobahn album straight through last night and its a stunning audio visual treat. makes up for the side view and shit glasses at the gig (as good as the gig was) in Manchester.
I waited a bit and got it with amazon prime, so 115 quid all in, so a 25 quid saving on what they were knocking out for. A tad expensive either way, but if you are bang into them then probably worth it.

some other box sets that have caught my eye:
The Complete Chris Bell. I most if not all of this has been released in other places, but now it's all together. surely now the last word on Chris Bell
http://omnivorerecordings.com/music/the ... hris-bell/
Tim Buckley- seem to be fair amount of Tim Buckley stuff coming out soon including new live recordings but also this boxset which includes all the albums apart from the final two 'funk' ones. It does however include the very hard to get Starsailor and a CD of 'Works in Progress'

The Who 30Years of Maximum r n b is a fine example. For me that is like a template of how to make something really worthwhile. I can't think of any others worth mentioning, but then I only have a few.
Oh, hang on, I have a reader's digest ABBA 5lp set that I was very happy to spend two quid on.

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
I just picked up The Pretty Things- Bouquets From A Cloudy Sky CD box. There had been a used copy in one of the local record shops. They knocked it down to $100 as they have had it over 1 year.
It is pretty complete. Nice HC book, every CD w/bonus tracks, loads of other stuff too.

Reminds me of the 13th Floor Elevators- Sign Of The Three Eyed Men CD box. THAT complete. Minus the Philippe DeBarge stuff.

glad to hear you are enjoying this Olan, i'm tempted myself. it gathers a lot of random soundtrack songs and things like that in one place.
it seems that all versions only have 2CDs worth of music, it's just the extra stuff you get with it that varies?
Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
The other day I picked up The Scientists "A Place Called Bad" CD box. It was too cheap to pass up, and I needed to just dive into the band.
So far, I'm digging them. Early stuff makes me think of The Heartbreakers or NY Dolls.

I guess it may simply be they are not contractually able to monetise most of that content, but whilst 8 CDs of REM would be wasted on me (I love Automatic For The People plus selected songs from just before and after) it's frustrating we have to rely on bands taking advantage of all this material, often far too many years later.
A good example is Belle & Sebastian, who have done many live and studio BBC sessions over the years - including some great live content for BBC Scotland recently. But whilst I enjoyed their BBC Sessions release, the second CD of an old live gig was really disappointing - it displayed all the worst traits of their notoriously sloppy early gigs.
In a way I think we Spiritualized fans got really lucky with the official Complete Works adjuncts to the album canon. I doubt that would have happened without the success of LAGWAFIS.
I guess the official live RAH album also benefited in that respect, but whilst it captured the live gigs of the era far better than any gig I actually attended at that time - the Jools Holland-esque plinky-plonky pub piano playing of Thighpaulsandra in the upper register, just ruins every track it so perversely intrudes into!

I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

I preordered the SFA BBC set this morning. Was too late for the super deluxe version with the extra live album. But that one was limited to 150 or something copies.
edit: the 4 lp vinyl version is gone now, too.

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
I could be tempted by the REM boxset as I am a big fan.. but still think it may be bit expensive for me!
CD box set of the Cocteau Twins Fontana Years:
https://www.normanrecords.com/records/1 ... tana-years
the box sets that I really regret not getting are the Velvet Underground ones. I have tried to find affordable ones (particularly of the debut) but to no avail. I guess I am so used to CDs actually decreasing in value as years go by- but this often doesn't apply to boxsets

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
It's only as it falls under commercially released stuff that has copyright etc... I'm fine with it, but Lou Reed's estate might not be.
Maybe even rename the download links in google unfriendly terms (ie 01, 02 etc)?
As for the VU, Angelsighs I hear ya. I would like all those plush box sets also, although the 2CD set of WL/WH is a beautiful thing on it's own. And has the best ever John Cale assisted take of 'Beginning to See the Light'.
I got lucky enough to find The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground 'super deluxe edition' on amazon a few years back for something ridiculous like £20 on a post winter sale. It is a thing of beauty, and suitably luxurious.

OK - many apologies.
I'm still happy if either of you want to PM me and at least send you stuff that way.
Certainly don't want to fall out with anyone on the messageboard.

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
Have just ordered the REM at the BBC one 8cd/dvd. Looks great. Couldn't resist
Have been digging a bit deeper into the Pink Floyd early Years box from 18 months or so ago, some real gems on there. My interest piqued after a fantastic nick mason's SOS gig in Manchester recently, could not recommend this show enough for anyone with even a passing interest in early PF stuff

Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
Got to take a look into the REM boxset. Didn't know that Cocteau Twins were on the Fontana label, they were known on the 4AD label.
Re: Rolling Boxset Thread
I'm the same. I really thought i'd pick them up cheaply a few years later so passed on their release. Mind you I did download all of them.angelsighs wrote: ↑Sat Oct 20, 2018 6:58 pm the box sets that I really regret not getting are the Velvet Underground ones. Gutted I never picked up the CD/DVD box of JAMC's 'Stoned & Dethroned'. I got the other five sets with my own cash and as presents but didn't grab S&D. Okay I already had everything on it but they were nice sets and kept the collection intact! It now goes for stupid money
