CD Comp Swap

Post by Aquarian-Time »

I didn't do this last time out but would be well up for it this time around. I assume its everyone in, make yourselves known and then you get randomly paired up with a fellow forumite to exchange compilations?
I'm in anyway

Fabulous idea... was always great fun.

Do we stick to making physical CDs and posting them old-skool??? Or do we share online like all the cool kids do nowadays?

I'll do it, but I don't have a cd burner anymore, so I'll have to go digital, if that's cool.

Prefer to burn mine, but if my oppo has no means of playing it I can digitise.....may have to trial and error that as not done before, but I'm sure its straighforward

Count me in. I'd prefer physical media through the post, but happy to go with concensus if we're going virtual.

Can I request that if we do virtual file names and ID tags are removed to make the tracks a surprise. I think we did this last time and posted the track lists on here. Also decent bit rates and keep the comp to about CD length.
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

I would love to be involved in this. I really like the idea of getting CD's but sadly I don't have any way of burning them? I could do virtual though. Special points for supplying with artwork...

Maybe this calls for a poll!
It's been awhile since we had one a those.

1) folks who need digital files only
2) folks who can mail out and receive cd's

Kinda why I suggested using a forum branded pill usb stick in another thread.

Nice to get things in the mail.

Was just a thought to then raise money for paying for the running costs of the forum.

I'd like to send and receive brick-and-mortar CDs but can upload digital files for whoever needs them.
And I'd gladly donate toward Modlab's USB idea.

and if ORBITAL is participating, I'd very much like another piece of toast, please. thank you.

I'm in - I have a CD burner so happy to do either CD-R comps or USB sticks. An official forum "pill" full of aural medicine is a pretty boss concept, I must admit :)

All track details will be removed to allow a sense of mystery, but a tracklist will be provided if someone wants one. I think people will recognise bits and bobs, hell you might even recognise all of it, but i still find it intruiging to see whats gonna hit next when i'm listening to other people's comps.

still need to pull my finger out and sort mine :/
yeah problem is, with the knowledgeable types round here might be a struggle to find some tunes which actually take people by surprise! might just try and concentrate on the flow and perhaps finding some deep cuts from known artists.

some years ago I did a compilation for a friend and the tracklisting went AWOL. he texted me asking what the amazing 9 minute song with rippling guitars was- none other than She's a Superstar :) he couldn't believe it was by The Verve, as he was one of those people that only really knew the hits.

so we're just doing it as a request thing rather than a secret santa style setup?

the other thing about doing compilations is the varied volume level/mastering issue (contemporary stuff is more often than not mastered much louder!)

I've tried to get all my tracks the same, there or there abouts, as i have a wee app that allows me to edit MP3 quite easily.

Not really sure whats going on Dr, but that links not working for me,

Ill be honest here I gave up on burning cds a while back and the more I think about it, my recent listening - I mean the last few yrs of underground/semi underground psyche listening - makes me think there is more than a couple of folks here I would be hard pushed to make a comp for that didn`t feel like they`d put their own music library on shuffle. I`ve put my hat in the ring for this so I`m going to do it but I may have to go into the darker recesses of my music to do it. I think a sudden jolt can be just as satisfying as a smooth transition, something to think about. If we`re firing cdrs around Ill get some, but I can do digital as well if that`s what some folk prefer, although not sure I could remove all tags for the surprise element if that`s the case.

yeah I could do a bit of tweaking, but it's a lot of work, and want to make sure I don't make any of the tracks lose their impact.

another option would be to cleverly sequence the comp so that it gradually gets louder! (like a Spiritualized concert!)

Time to start work on my comps. I must admit, I like this 'anonymous tracklist' idea. Keeps any preconceptions or prejudices at bay :)

Right, here's my first themed compilation (two 80 minute "discs") for anyone who fancies a listen. It's a trawl through some of my favourite 'intense' (e.g. musically, lyrically, emotionally etc) tracks from my music collection, so I've called it "Stormy". I've tried to avoid stuff I think lots of you will have (e.g. anything Spz/Sp3 related, modern psych etc) but some of it will no doubt be familiar. Further planned installments are "Sunny Intervals" and "Calm"...

Track info has been removed, fire me a pm if you'd like the details. Let me know if you have any trouble with the downloads.

I have burned my to 2 cd's (was nearly 4, so some gentle editing was required) and they are in today's post to Laz69.
They have avoided most things he a) probably owns and b) is too well known and gone for a quite a combination of soundtrack/psych/hazy sunshine/acid folk vibe. In short its all over the place.
I may test myself and see if I can teach myself how to whip it up on here via dropbox, hopefully this evening.
Cheers to the uploaders so far, all been downloaded

1997 was when I really started going to clubs. Mostly one weekly club night when the DJ would manage 4-5 New Order and Charlatans tunes every single time. (But please keep in mind clubs in Paris = 11pm to 5 or 6am, not just 2-3am).
I think my best memory from these club nights (picking something tame here) has to be that one night in 1999 when a song came up and we heard these very unexpected trumpets and calypso music and then the singing kicked in and I ran to the DJ booth "Bob is that Super Furries?!!" And indeed it was Northern Lights maybe 2 months before it actually got released.

Anyhow if this has turned into a bit of a free for all, I'll try and upload a mix too. I haven't done one in absolute ages so that could be fun.
Last time I took part in a forum CD swap, I ended up uploading files too weeks after the recipient got his CDs, as I thought it was a good mix, but then I would. Probably a few songs all of yous will know, and plenty more not everyone will.

I've finally had time to put together what I think is a pretty fine compilation. message me if anyone wants a copy and I'll post one out (wanna try not to do downloads and keep this old school!)
aside from some heavier moments, it's chiefly a fairly chilled mix with some folky stuff and some trippy stuff

I remember being involved in this years ago and it was always really nice to get a cd drop through the letterbox. I still listen to them all on my iPod. Aphrodite's Child mentioned above was on a comp done by purespace. Great idea as always.
