Maybe people remember the Roundhouse show in 2009 where the PA was so loud it rendered the music unlistenably painful

Yeah pretty surprising. It doesn't seem to have been promoted much. Seems to be a standalone warmup for meltdown so might be little rusty, maybe just a show to work out the kinks!
I shall be in attendance of course

I was at that gig with Runcie, Modlab and others. My addled memory of the evening suggest that it was loud, but perfectly listenable .Jasonsmith wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 6:48 am Maybe people remember the Roundhouse show in 2009 where the PA was so loud it rendered the music unlistenably painful

I saw them for the first time in 2013 and it was loud but not ridiculously loud. I get the impression he had decided to tone it down (a bit) at that point. great show.
wonder what the chances are of new material being played?

I was at the Festival Hall show on Saturday with Modlab and they played one new track which was F***ing awesome. A poundin,g relentless motorik beat and the most simple one note riff that only changed at the chorus. I have a feeling it will make alot of people on here very happy. It wasn;t that loud but the bass during Wonder 2 was so deep it was shaking the floor. Superb stuff.

I was there too at the Festival Hall, Great gig, agree the new one and Wonder 2 were highlights, felt like they were trying to blow a hole through the roof.

I can only imagine how good 'Wonder 2' would have been live like you suggest.
The new song? This will never replicate - or even get close - to the live MBV experience, but read about this elsewhere and indeed a healthy dosage of Spacemen, Stooges, Sex Pistols and Hawkwind appear to be present:

shame they didn't play the new tune in Birmingham, surely a new song would need a warm up more than the songs they have played umpteen times? from what I can make out on that clip it sounds great though! I like the idea of them doing a ballsy rocker but it's still got that MBV twist.
The Birmingham show was good but not amazing, certainly not as good as the Birmingham Academy show on the last tour. it seemed more like a public rehearsal which was to be expected. there were a few false starts and also Kevin fiddling with settings and effects to change things which seemingly only he can hear
great atmosphere in the room though with fans really happy to see them back. despite all their imitators there still isn't a band quite like them. it sounds so messy with all the guitars bleeding into each other, vocals basically inaudible, but somehow it all works! Wonder 2 was a highlight, that track is always a bit of a mindfuck, but the best track was Soon where everything seemed to click and it sounded just perfect.
I liked the fact that the setlist really does cover the whole gamut, it's not just Loveless. 'mbv' tracks are still in there as well as key EP tracks of course.
they are not that loud any more either. ear plugs were handed out like before but I didn't feel the need for them, and my ears were fine the next day.

Have a listen to this version from the MBV forum. It's slightly cleaned up and eq'ed. Such a great track! Need to be careful I don't over play it..

Thanks for posting the track up,much better quality, can hear the drums and the whammy bars on the guitars.
