Mercury Rev 1993 TV footage finally found

Post by spzretent »

I had this bizarre occurrence when in London in 1993 to see Mercury Rev at the Clapham Grand and a few nights of 4AD's 13 Year Itch festival. I was over with 3 friends and when we got back to our hotel on the Friday night we turned on the TV and there was this:

Nice to know I wasn't hallucnating or dreaming. 25 years later it's nice to know it exists.
Oh the David Baker years......

Great Film! I've kind of forgotten about the Rev over the years. It might be time to dig out that first album again.

I think the footage could also be be the inspiration for Yo Gabba Gabba??

That show! Seemed like every person un the UK indie/spacerock scene was there. Kevin Shieds told me the show was in quad. It was LOUD. Also turns out one of my very best friends was there too and this was a few years before we had ever met.

I also ran into a friend high up at Geffen who was there for St. Johnny, who were the middle band on this M Rev bill, invited me to go to the Phoenix Festival over the weekend with VIP area tickets. He was there for Sonic Youth whom he had signed to Geffen. I told him no thanks. That I would get out there and want to leave immediately. I was never much of a festival person. Plus I had 2 nights of the 4AD 13 Year Itch to attend.

Pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but on Mercury Rev's bandcamp page there's some excellent live downloads available for purchase - those most likely to be of interest are:

1992 - Brixton Academy (supporting Ride)
1993 - Phoenix Festival
1995 - Whisky A Go Go

All three are amazing (there's live footage of the '93 'Chasing A Bee' somewhere on Youtube too) but the 1992 Brixton gig is utterly mindblowing - I seriously doubt Ride managed to top that opener

Totally agree. I didn't think it would capture the chaos of the shows around that time, so was hesitent about picking it up, but fucking hell its good!

If there was ever a band that needed their early live shows captured properly, it was the Rev.
