Yes, I saw that on FB earlier. It's a cracker, isn't it? Really liked the EP last year he did with Martin Duffy - Alien Stadium. Seems to be going from strength to strength!

Finally got around to listening to the new Steve Mason album, About the Light, last night . Liked it so much that I listened to it three times in a row. 10 tracks and exactly 40 mins in length, what a great record! I especially like the second song, Rocket, but they are all ace! Hope the record does well for him. I follow him on Facebook and notice that 6 Music play him a lot and he was on Soccer AM, so it feels like it's getting abit of exposure.

BTW, whatever happened to the other Beta Banders after the Aliens? They released two great albums, and then disappeared. Shame!

Ste
John Mclean got into film, made a very good western starring Michael Fassbender called 'Slow West', plus a short with him as well, 'Pitch Black Heist', that's also worth a look.
As for the other Aliens i've no idea.

The Steve Mason album is definitely one of his better ones but, like all of his solo material, I was still left feeling a little underwhelmed at the end of it all.

Listening to this now. Sounds pretty good. Rocket is great indeed, as is the title track.
Can’t help but wonder how much better sound quality wise ANH would have sounded if Jason had used a proper mixing engineer. I mean if Steve Mason - not a big seller, is he? - can afford Stephen Street, so could Jason. But I digress...
Lovely album this ;)

Plus I see that the Aliens are planning on releasing a live record before they release new material. Good stuff!

Brothers and Sisters what are your thoughts on 'Brothers and Sisters'?

I've always found his material hit and miss but this definitely falls into the former category. Uplifting songs and excellent production. The kind of album that will reveal more with each listen. I suspect maximum enjoyment would be gained on a sunny day with 2 or 3 friends and refreshments.

Agreed! I played most of it last night and was very impressed. The last album he did which I feel had that kind of depth was the ‘Monkey Minds…’ record.

But yeah, some amazing stuff there and will be getting replayed…

B&S arrived yesterday and I've listened 3-4 times now. Really enjoying it - real good vibe to it. I haven't seen Steve live yet and I need to recify that!

I'm a bit of an old school raver and the melody in the chorus of the title track "Brothers and Sisters" sounded really familiar. It clicked this morning, and it's very similiar (almost a sample?) of High On Hope by Hardcore Uproar - specifically the "chorus" of the track - starts around the 2.37 point:

Been living with it for a week now, I think it’s fantastic and up there with his best, idiosyncratic, joyous, thoughtful and moving, really looking forward to seeing him now

It's really grown on me too. Initially I found the anthemic vibe of a few songs less appealing but I had it on while digging up the garden the other day and it sounded seriously good. I'm sure live it'll hit even more sweet spots.

Can believe that Steve is coming to St Albans on his next "Travelling Hard" tour in December. The Horn is a small venue = 200 people max. Looking forward to it.
